Sequinning some amazingness! [emoji12]

Hey guys! I've been inspired to make a sequin tail! I also own a Sun Tail. Nothing wrong with having generic spandex tails but I want something I can call my own. Oh and I chose neoprene because the extra buoyancy sounded appealing when mostly swimming in a big open lake [emoji15]

SOOOO I came up with 3 different designs and I've narrowed it down to this one. (Don't laugh at my horrible drawing) haha.

Of course it'll be alot more blended and the colors will mash into each other.

SO this is what I have so far! I swear I ordered all the sample colors of sequins from Cartwrights because I wanted to see them in real life. This is the scale color template that I will be using:

I've also cut out my fins out of shelf liner and sandwiched in a pretty iridescent pearly fabric I found from joanns. I'm not sure how I'm going to keep it together yet.....I'll figure that out later lol.

Those fins look so cool!! Perhaps you could use a strong glue or even silicone caulking to keep the layers together?

To bond the fabric, could you use spray adhesive? I think it would work best if you attached the fabric to the liner and THEN cut it out, after fully drying. ALSO... Have you ever thought of using fantasy film? It is iridescent and amazing, but I haven't found a way to use it for a mermaid yet! Maybe you could hear bond several sheets, and then cut it into your frilly parts?

It worked pretty good...but I'm worried about the Dorsal fins being two separate sides because there's a zipper In between...so I can't fuse that part together.

I'm pretty sure Fantasy Film is only sold online. I've used it to make fairy wings before though and it is gorgeous. I imagine it'd look pretty cool as fins if you decide to experiment with it :D

What about sewing veins or spines through all layers of the fins? I also tried encasing by sewing all around the edges. After my first swim the fabric frayed so l edged it in sparkling fabric paint to stop the fraying. Pin it well before sewing. My fabric was very slippery.

That's actually a good idea! I actually ran fray check around my fabric edges but I'm not sure how that will hold up.

Started baste stitching the outline so I can try it on.

First of all I don't know how you guys pull your waist part over your hips, because that was damn impossible and I actually ended up breaking my top half of my basting stitches [emoji24][emoji30] So I had to come in and pin it closed. I think some safety pins would have worked better for this but I had to make do with what I had.

After that I traced the edges again with a pen so I have a guideline of where to sew my sequins.

Working on both sides seperatelly is a great idea! It is so much easier dan working on the tail stitched together. The mistake I made when starting out on the tail I'm making now.

Only one of my neoprene tails has a zip, and I don't use that anymore. My other 3 don't though, but it's a bit of a wriggle getting in them :P Though I do have a way to not split the seams which so far has worked.

The metallic shimmer on this paint is life y'all [emoji7]

I used basic metallic acrylic paint from hobby lobby with a fabric medium. Then I coated it in glossy acrylic spray to protect the paint and heat set it. The paint was $1 each!!

All acrylic paint is waterproof. I mixed it with a fabric medium to thin down the paint and make it adhere to the fabric better. I heard it also helps with stretchiness and cracking too. Heat set is when you run an iron over the paint job to set it so it'll be more permanent. Don't iron the paint directly though! Put a t-shirt or a cloth over it first and iron on low for about 20-30 seconds.

OMG. The beginning of machine sewing is so frustrating! Trying to find the perfect tension points between the thread and the bobbin and thread getting stuck over and over and having to re-thread. I think I finally found the sweet spot because everything seems to be going smoother after an hour of tweaking things. [emoji24][emoji15] Finally settled on the thread tension at "2" and bobbin thread super loose!
