I'm rather terrified to announce that I've finally opened an Etsy shop for my beaded mermaid bras. I just love seeing them all up there, finally, so colorful! :) I'll have other mermaid themed stuff posted soon, including (hopefully) weighted blankets and sequined beach bags. Check out Fancy Fish Fashions! (https://www.etsy.com/shop/FancyFishFashions) (Dancing Fish Designs was already taken, drat it.) If you're from Mernetwork I'll give you a 15% discount...assuming I can figure out how. I've only been playing on Etsy for a few hours!

Far off in the future I'd love to add sequin tails with silicone flukes to my shop. But before I jump into serious designing, I'd love some feedback from anyone who already has a neoprene/sequin tail, preferably with sequins sewn on instead of glued-- how is it holding up for you? Is it difficult to maintain? Do the sequins wear out after a few dunkings or are they pretty strong? If anyone has a Mermaid Shelly tail with the large sequins, (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?4242-Large-Shell-Sequins-48mm-Order-Thread-(Vector-Enterprises)) I'd love to hear about how they lasted. If the sequins were all falling off, breaking, or peeling apart after a year then it's not worth it. Also, is there anyone interested in being a tester for a neoprene/big sequin/silicone fluke tail? The cost would be in the $300-400 range, not including monofin.

Many of these tops could be made in different sizes. I'm working on a 42DD right now. :)

Oooooh, I love the idea of the separate fluke!! I'd love to make myself a silicone (or at least hybrid) tail, but in a 1 bedroom apartment, I just don't have the space (let alone ventilated space) to do that! But I might jump on that fluke! I need to go home and measure my monofin, haha!

Elodea the Mermaid
06-21-2016, 06:29 PM
OMG Dancing Fish! I was literally just talking to Theo about a separate fluke situation!! And yours is one of my all time favorite sculpts. I will be patronizing your shop very soon!! :yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:

Mermaid Freyja
06-21-2016, 06:37 PM
Adding to the cheers, I will also say that I adore the idea of a separate fluke base! I too, live in cramped quarters, and while I still have enough room for large sewing projects, it's not the right kind of environment for large sculpts and full scale molds.
I've been hoping to do a fabric/neoprene and silicone finned hybrid tail, and this would make things SO much easier!
Rock on with your Etsy awesomeness, Dancing Fish! xoxo

Dancing Fish

Oh, wow, seriously?! I've never seen anyone selling fluke covers on Etsy before so I assumed there was no market for it. I wasn't even sure what to call them when I posted it on a whim! Would anyone be interested in boatload of individual scales, or untinted scale sheets, too? I don't have the time to put full tails together, because fitting is the hardest part, but I can certainly offer premolded pieces for DIYers. :) My daughter wants a silicone fluke on her next tail, and I need to make a smaller sculpt for her anyway. So hopefully I'll have a couple of fluke styles available, as well as some hip/ankle fins. The plan is to have it fit the Fin Fun shapes so folks can just encase their preexisting monofins instead of making entire new inserts.

Cool!

And to the other folks-- I can easily adjust straps if you like a bra. I can go smaller or remove the original straps and go bigger. Or lop straps off entirely and add fishnetting. Customizing the existing bras is totally easy. I should totally put that up there.

Your fluke is beautiful :)
Just thought I would let you know I am making a silicone fluke which was ordered back in March after my clients photo shoot and I don't want anyone thinking I stole your idea. It's scheduled to start in October :)

Yeah! I'd definitely be interested in hip, ankle and a dorsal (if dorsal fins are ever something you end up making, too) <3!

Dancing Fish
06-22-2016, 10:22 PM
Hey Fifi, no problem! :)
And Freyja, I was considering sculpting a matching dorsal, actually. I already have a mold I made that I never used of a larger fin...perhaps I should pour some silicone into it and see how it turned out... :)

Looking at the monofin cover, is it a thing where you can attach it to a tail body?

I'm not understanding how it works.

Plans to fit a Sun Tail Nunui?

Dancing Fish
06-30-2016, 12:04 AM
Thanks Aria!
Jaffa, it's just two silicone flaps, intended for folks who are making silicone tails. I'm assuming the person who buys them has read about making tails. I call them covers because if I called them flukes, someone would think they were getting a full monofin-containing fluke. I can embed fabric so one can sew it to a fabric tail. There's also threads here about how to attach them to fins.

As a matter of fact, I'm working on a silicone cover for Fin Fun fins so my daughter can play. I assume Sun Tails are similar in size. If you posted measurements of their monofin with a pic, or even better a comparison of their fin with a Fin Fin fin, I could tell you for certain. With a spandex tail you can easily adhere the silicone directly to the spandex. But we're going to try it just as a removable cover that you just stretch over the fin first, because how cool would that be? :)

Mermaid Jaffa
06-30-2016, 10:46 PM
The Sun Tail monofin is much bigger in all directions, than the Fin Fun. Its nearly the same size and width as an adult merfin.

Anyways, no hurry, I'm just looking at future options and such.

Dancing Fish
07-09-2016, 04:09 PM
New H2O-inspired fluke shape, with a Fancy Fish flair! Available soon! This one fits a Rapid or a Fin Fun monofin. :)
I was experimenting with the top, so I cut off the top portion in these examples. The full mold is shown below. The scale pattern didn't turn out all that well, so I'm filling it in so that portion will be untextured to match the upper portion of the fin.

3796037961

And yes, that's a sequin tail in progress. For my daughter, who said, "just mix the two colors together." We'll see how it goes!

And sadly, I had to raise my prices for the silicone flukes and fins...because I'll get maybe 3 whole flukes out of each $200+/gallon order. Woah! What's this stuff made out of, real platinum?!

THIS IS GENIUS!!!! I would definitely be interested in this. I would love to make an individual scale tale mainly because they take up so little room (i.e. no giant scale sheet molds to deal with) but the fluke was always the drawback but this is the solution!

TheSaltySiren

How did you attach the fins to the fabric tail? I just purchased a magical and would love to add some extra things to it!

Dancing Fish
07-13-2016, 03:43 PM
I used Dragon Skin but you can also use Sil Poxy. I've tested those, but I'm also reasonably certain you can use aquarium silicone adhesive or even 100% GE silicone caulk too. I like the Dragon Skin because it doesn't REEK of vinegar. The sil poxy I used on the fins still stinks two days later. :(

TheSaltySiren
07-13-2016, 05:04 PM
So you just like glued them to the sides of the fabric wit the silicone?

Your fluke is beautiful :)http://juragan.club/5/g.png

Dancing Fish
07-13-2016, 05:18 PM
Not quite. First I wrapped the monofin in saran wrap, because I want to be able to remove it later (it's cracked!). Then I put the monofin back into the tail to stretch it out properly. Then I smeared dragon skin all over the back of the spandex and mashed it right onto the bottom fluke. Then I smeared silicone onto the spandex on the top portion (with the foot pockets) and sides of the silicone, leaving the bottom of the fin unglued (so I can still take the monofin out), and pinned everything together until the silicone hardened. So it's still open on the bottom. Later, when I've replaced the insert, I'll add dabs of silicone to close the bottom, but I'll leave most of it unglued so water can get out easily.

Thanks, Geffy! :)

This is so fantastic. I really didn't know about sequin tails until very recently seeing one on a tail making thread, and I loved the idea of a sequin tail, but thought about how the fluke must be vulnerable to damage. This is SUCH a cool and easy way to blend different styles together, and I really love the silicone fluke with a sequin tail. I love the large sequins, just- love, love all of it.
Really neat.

I have a video of my daughter wearing just the body and falling on the knees, then rolling around over the hardwood floor...so far the sequins are holding up well! She's going to do her best to destroy it so we can see how durable they are!

Fancy Fish has five styles of hip/ankle and dorsal fins, for embellishing mermaid tails! You can sew them onto fabric (see pic above) or glue them onto silicone. Currently offered in one color, two-tone, or frosted (and I will try to match the colors of your tail).

OH my goodness! I just stalked through your entire thread and shop and I love your work! I also have a question regarding sending my own tail to you for a fluke and fin upgrade! On your etsy it just said fabric tails but I was wondering wether i'd be able to send a neoprene tail to you and have a silicone fluke and fins put onto it! I'm looking to upgrade from fabric to using neoprene and your flukes are so pretty!!!! :)

Dancing Fish
10-06-2016, 06:04 PM
Thanks! I'm sure that would work. As long as the fluke portion of the neoprene isn't painted, I'm sure the silicone will stick just fine. If it is painted, you'll have to handle it carefully-- I can't guarantee how well it will stick over the long run. I haven't tried gluing silicone to neoprene myself, but I know other tailmakers do it all the time! I also recommend a little ruffle to hide the join; I don't have anything fancy to hide that transition yet.

That was the plan when I made them, though I've never actually tried it (yet!). :) I wanted the little arms to be able to interlock with each other and the straps. It might work! They have flat backs, but some creative slits here and there could fix that.

I've been staring at your etsy page for awhile now. your work is beautiful! I plan to stop into your shop sometime soon when I decide what all I want to do with my finfun. <3

Question- with the silicone fluke cover, how easy is it to clean out the monofin? has anyone tested out how it handles the beach?

Dancing Fish
04-26-2017, 08:49 AM
Thank you! It depends on whether or not you seal the bottom of the fluke closed. I leave mine open, like the fabric tails are open, so I can still take the monofin out or prop everything open to dry it out. If you sealed up the bottom edge I imagine it would be much more difficult to keep it clean.

New sequins are in stock! We have white, pink, blue, cyan, and lavender again, as well as peach, yellow, orange, and a really beautiful red-copper.

Also! A kid-sized, plus-sized walking mermaid tail, perfect for a kid who might be a bit too wide for standard Halloween costumes. Made from an amazing sequin fabric that was hideously expensive, LOL! Rowan was so sad to have outgrown it! But since she was the designer/shell decoration artist, I'm giving her the money if it sells. https://mernetwork.com/index/images/smilies/smile.png

Modified from a Simplicity pattern, fits up to size 10-12ish. The child can insert feet into the tail to hide them and be a mermaid. NONSWIMMABLE! A steal at only $15. Details here! (https://www.etsy.com/listing/555921719/walking-mermaid-costume-fancy-dress-up?ref=shop_home_active_3)

Also, is anyone interested in damaged or imperfect sequins? I go through my orders and try to pick out all the weird ones. I have several pounds of sequins in many different colors that are missing holes, or have small-to-major flaws in their coats, or that are just bent strangely or mis-stamped. I hate to just toss them. Anyone have a kid who wants to do a mermaid project? Or doesn't mind flaws? Or just wants a grab-bag of random colors? They're just as shiny and many of the flaws wouldn't show from a distance. 70% off! Will post pics if you're interested.

And now for something completely different: mermaid cupcakes. Made of dragon skin, squishy foam and glitter! These were for my kid, who is now obsessed with squishies, but I'm thinking of putting a few in the shop when I perfect the process. They're addictingly squishable, very satisfying, like a little stress ball. And I also wanted to see if you can thicken Dragon Skin enough to pipe it....yes! You can! There's tons of squishy cupcakes out there, but they all use caulk for icing (not all that squishy). I'm getting a nice super-squishy Eco-Flex sample in my next order to try this again. What do you think? Would you tack on a sparkly scented squishy mermaid cupcake onto an order? ;)

And now for something completely different: mermaid cupcakes. Made of dragon skin, squishy foam and glitter! These were for my kid, who is now obsessed with squishies, but I'm thinking of putting a few in the shop when I perfect the process. Oooooooh or make a little octopus squishy? Or flounder squishy? Or a sea shell squishy! But no fishy scent! Lol

I made starfish molds! :) They're not quite there yet, but I do plan on having starfish squishies, too. :) And of COURSE there has to be an octopus! I have a little fat one in my mind, just waiting for me to sculpt it.

I'll definitely be interested when they're ready. I love the cupcakes too. I bake a lot and this would be perfect for my office. :)

Do you sell the flukes completed, like painted and with the monofin sealed inside? I'm in no way ready to buy, but I want my next tail to be a sequin tail with a silicone fluke, but all I want to do its attach the fluke to the body. I've got a small apartment and no where to work with silicone.

I don't offer them yet, but I've been considering offering that. Give me a buzz when you're closer to the completion of your project!

Have you ever thought about making your own tail but the idea of making a scale sheet was WAY TOO MUCH EFFORT? (I can sympathize, having just made one. Yeah. SO MUCH EFFORT!! :fallover:)

Now available! Fancy Fish Fashions silicone scale sheets! Complete with embedded power mesh. You pick the length and width you want, and I'll make it for you. Currently available in one color only, although that may change in the future. The top four inches was left smooth if you'd like a smooth waistline.

10% off all scale sheet orders during the month of July. (And yes, you can still use your Mernetwork MERNET15 discount code, too.) Check them out here!

What is the longest you can make? I have an extended monofin, and it needs a long tail skin.
And what is the widest you can make?
And yes, nice offer.

Edit: I see in your shop its "nearly 3 feet by 5 feet". Do I have that right?
Edit 2: to link an image put [ img]before the link and [/ img] after, both without the added space.

That is correct! The top four inches are smooth, and the total usable length is 59 inches (55 without the smooth bit). I can make the sheets any size rectangle you like within the 3 x 5 limit. The sample sheet I made is HUGE! Nearly as tall as I am! :)

Also considering whether anyone would like thinner sheets pre-glued to neoprene or scuba knit. Or sheets created already in tail shapes (thinking the customer would send an outline to guide me). The latter would be sold by final weight.

Good evening Ma'am. If i order the scale sheet, fins, how long does it take for the silicon to "age" before i can no longer paint it? weeks months? I was thinking of ordering, but shipping outside of the US might take a long while.

That's a great question! Short answer: I'm not sure.

Long answer: The representative from Smooth on told me silicone should be painted as soon as possible, but I also know that many tail makers successfully repaint tails that are years old. There's a list of solvents you can use to clean and sort of "reopen" the pores in silicone that has been aged. I would suggest trying to paint a small section, let it cure, and see how easily it peels off before you break out the solvents. (I will have to look up what they are...acetone is one of them, and perhaps naptha?) The other advice is to use the psycho paint from Smooth on because the formula is slightly different from (and stickier than) regular Dragon skin.

Hi Again.
I made a cloth tail for my Lunocet to see how long it would have to be. I also compared it to my Spellbound length. Conclusion: I need a scale sheet 64 inches long. Also, I prefer that the scales go all the way to the top. This means your sheet is short by 8 inches. ( I am 6 feet tall. I measure 43 inches waist to floor, then need 11 inches to cover my feet, and another 10 inches to get to the end of the monofin. ) Question: Do you think it would be reasonable for me to glue on an extra 8 inch segment at the end? This would be at the extended monofin part, and the added segment would be about 10 inches wide.

i found this though, but not sure if it applies to Dragon skin silicone.

I have seen posts as well from the bigger tailmaking companies offering repaints, so there has to be away.

i have your shop on etsy Favorited and have been daydreaming about the things i want to order. Soon, just setting aside some money. Adulting is hard. :(

Argh! Doggone it, I was hoping it'd be long enough and wide enough to accommodate any request. Grr. I am not sure what the extension would look like, let me see if I have two pieces I can lay over each other. With some creative cutting and gluing you could probably hide the seams!

I've been adulting half my life and I still haven't really gotten the hang of it. I'm good at faking it. ;)
According to several more knowledgeable folks who replied to my question, you can prepare the silicone by first giving it a bath in warm soapy (dish soap) water, drying thoroughly, and then rubbing a bit of isopropyl alcohol over it and letting that dry. The paint should still stick even after four years (according to someone who repainted a used tail).
