Trying to figure out the best way to put the tail on- is there a reason not to put it on this way? I couldn't figure out a more accurate descriptor...I know there is a thread somewhere about this?
it seems to give the easiest access to the monofin but I REEEEEEEALLY don't want to destroy this thing...
pls advise...

Thank you! It is silicone- now I am suddenly panicking that maybe I made it a little too tight? I have tried it on repeatedly, And I mean- I can get it on, but it does pull a lot, and I don't want a ton of wear and tear just from getting in this thing. it is pretty hard to get on...Should I have on tights, or not? I read somewhere lubricant?

I second the rolling method for fabric. Works best if you don't have any extra frills or fins.
I have a silicone tail, and do something similar. I don't roll it, I fold it down, put my feet in, and fold it back up and wiggle the rest of the way. I would not roll silicone. You risk tearing it

Is is silicone or "partial/basic" silicone? Either way, I would get some hair conditioner and water and lube up your legs first. Unless you bought a tail second hand, your tail maker should have given you instructions on how to put it on and how to take care of it.

I'm my tail maker:/ lol and I didn't include directions and I will complain about this in Yelp reviewing myself, you better believe it. I got it off and will come back to it once I do some research. I'm scared of damaging it. I didn't want to put conditioner because I was hoping to avoid having to fully clean it right now. But I will remember that for before I put it on to swim. Thank you

I use coconut oil to put my finfolk tail on. I fold it down halfway, just one big fold, and then slowly unfold it back over my thighs and bum.

I have full silicone and also use coconut oil as a lubricant to get into my tail. I always rinse my tail after swimming (sometimes that means on the driveway with a garden hose, sometimes I soak her in the bath). There is always a little coconut residue left. In my case, I don't think it's harmful. As long as the moisture and dirt is gone. Sometimes taking a hand towel and wiping out the inside of the tail helps as well.

For tails with neoprene or fabric lining I would make sure they are cleaned and dry. Neoprene holds a lot of moisture and can be prone to molding.

NOTE:
If your tail is full silicone and you choose to use personal lubricant to put your tail on CHECK INGREDIENTS.
You must use WATER BASED personal lubricant. NOT silicone based. This can actually damage your tail.

I highly recommend coconut oil. Cheaper per volume than lube, smells better, and your skin will feel amazing afterwards!

Just make sure that whatever lubricant you use, never use silicone based lubricant, or lube with any trace of silicone at all. It can bond to your tail and ruin it. Water based would be your best bet as far as commercial lubricants go.

I've heard great things about coconut oil though so if you want to be on the safe side then go with that :)

You can also use cleaning wipes on the inside of your tail to clean out leftover residue. A good bath will clean out most of the leftover stuff, but you'll want to periodically give it a hardcore scrubbing to make sure there's nothing that could mold or mildew.

I used to do it that way ^ ended up with mold city. if you're putting something organic in your tail like coconut pol you need to thoroughly clean it out and dry it. Or you WILL get mold. I think it woulda been better to just make this thread name "how do I put on and clean my tail"

No, thank you all for the information- it was actually about getting it on, and at the moment it was half way on and folded funny and I was kind of having trouble moving it either way for fear of damaging it. The cleaning just came as a natural follow up to the suggestion of lubricating it. I kept fumbling through long threads suggesting rolling but showing folding, etc, lol. And- ain't nobody got time for that (lesson learned- I was going to put it on for a sec while my two little ones were napping and my two older ones were occupied- now I know 'put it on for a sec" is not a thing) y'all are welcome to delete or rename after I copy all of this good info...

Also I was really wanting to do sans lubricating since I was just putting it on for a minute, and did not have time to give it, or myself, a bath.
re:Clorox, and experimenting- I think a lot of my concerns are about breakdown over time, I didn't want to use something in the moment that was going to open the door to mold or corrosion. Is there a concise thread of "this stuff is safe for silicone vs this stuff causes damage"?
also- I guess I figured that on a forum with the range of conversations I have seen (the appropriateness of anatomically - ahem- functional- tails, for example) mentioning a condom (because it was an effective way to describe precisely) Wouldn't offend;)

I asked smoothon specifically. I talked about this is another thread but not sure where it is right now. Dragonskin is MEDICAL GRADE silicone which means it can be BOILED and treated with multiple cleansers provided they dont contain silicone or petroleum. I have been using lysol skin safe wipes and it has prevented mold damage in my tails, for over a year now with no breakdown. The chemicals in the pool constantly being exposed to your tail are stronger than a quick wipe.

your title doesnt explain what your thread is even about. I only clicked it because I thought it was a spam bot and I was going to report it. That's so good to hear and gives me a lot of perspective: you say that and I think about, for example, the fact that I have silicone spatulas that I have owned for ten years, and they get exposed to all kinds of things, and heat, etc.
i was paranoid about it falling apart because I just worked hard on it, but you are right, it isn't made of sugar crystals or something;)

Do NOT use hair conditioner to put on your tail. Hair conditioner is a light detergent and it will harm a silicone tail over time.

Rolling a silicone tail would not hurt it at all and as a matter of fact, the best way to put it on as well.

- FOLD your tail inside out. The waist area should be where your ankles are. Lube up feet to knee, (Trader Joes Aloe Vera skin lube = best and it's water based) Get your feet in monofin.
-LUBE UP thighs, butt cheeks, hips, bikini bottoms, don't forget the back of your legs and your lower back
-Wipe hands off
-ROLL/Pull your tail up FROM your knees. Put your hands on the inside of your tail by your knees that's flipped inside out and pull it up with your fingers together. It should be like a rolling method of the silicone. Once you get to your butt, have a friend sit behind you and pull it up like a roll as you hold yourself up.
- lightly pull up at the waist area of the tail after you're in it and if you've used enough lube, it should just slide easily.

If you feel it pulling on your skin, you didn't use enough lube.

Actually yeah, I literally just came on here to recommend buying a bottle of aloe vera gel from Trader Joe's. Theirs is super inexpensive. Aloe works exactly the same way as water-based personal lubricant (which is to say great) but is easier to rinse/wipe off your hands when you need to have grippy non-slippy hands for pulling the tail up. It's totally skin safe, water-soluble and washes cleanly away afterward, no oily residue. Bonus point: not having to bring a giant bottle of Astroglide to the side of the public pool.

I would actually recommend against using coconut oil or conditioner, to be honest. I know people who use coconut oil and it works great for them. However, I've recently been grilled by a manager at the (nicest by far) local pool about whether I was using anything oil-based to put my tail on because they'd had a lot of problems with oils getting in the pool and clogging the filters. So just a warning in case any of you guys run into that as well. Same would go for conditioner since they tend to have a lot of oils (coconut and jojoba being among the most common). ALSO. Everyone warns against using silicone-based lube but I have yet to see anyone point out the fact that many many conditioners also have silicones in them: you can find them listed in the ingredients; two of the most common are dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane. I don't know exactly how chemically similar these particular silicones are to the ones used in lube (I guess I can go look that up and get back to you) but I wouldn't be willing to risk it. I also wouldn't want to use conditioner in any sort of open-water swimming situation because that shit ain't good for the aquatic environment or aquatic life. Imagine being a fish and getting conditioner all up in your gills.

One last recommendation, especially for those of you who have a tight and/or finny tail like I do: lube up the OUTSIDE of the tail as well as the inside when you fold it down. By that I mean, when you fold the tail down to put your feet in, put some lube/aloe whatever you choose into the folded-over part so it's on the outside of the body and on any fins. That way when you go to pull the tail body up over your thighs and hips and it becomes tighter against itself, it won't grip and pull on itself. This makes it WAY easier not only to slide the folded part back up, but it prevents the fins from catching and getting pulled on and potentially tearing.

Aloe gel for the win. Slap it on and rub it all around. You won't regret it.

Theobromine- I hadn't at all thought to add to the outside, and that was definitely part of the problem. I don't have any extra fins, but the friction was making it so much more difficult and would probably add a lot of wear and tear.
And hadn't thought of the implications of conditioner, so true.
Astroglide at the pool, though, you should just transfer trader joe's aloe into a nice flashy lube container, so you don't lose the creep factor, lol
