So this is a thread of New items people are creating, or items already out there to make the life of mers better or more affectionate. I have had this idea stuck in my head for the longest time. A kind of " I wounder if this is out there or even made idea" So I went looking and its out there. strapless goggles. Has anyone ever used them??? what are your thoughts.

and what are your ideas you wish someone would make, Or items that are already out there that you think would make mers life more affectionate when in and out of the water.

This might be a weird one, but I've got my heart set on a water proofed iPod shuffle so I can listen to mermaid tunes while I practice mer swimming. :)

@Sakutama- it definitely exists. I plan on getting one for my long-distance open water swims. They are relatively inexpensive, too!

I don't know about ipods, but I have the Finis Neptune (https://www.amazon.com/FINIS-1-30-060-Neptune/dp/B00ACP3OOM). I am absolutely in love with it, and it is relatively affordable. I always take it to the pool when I go for a swim.

I've got plans for a drawstring fishnet backpack for when I swimming at the lake. That way I can carry some stuff with me like sunglasses, goggles, a water bottle, maybe a snack.

A little silicone octopus that has a rubber band embedded in it so you can wear your hair in a ponytail but it's still mermaidy oh or a silicone octopus necklace so it looks like the octopus is holding onto you. (I love them they're my spirit animal)

Oh I hadn't heard of that one! Hubs just ordered a water proofed iPod shuffle for me as my anniversary gift. I'm so exited!!!

Oh!!! I hope you don't mind me "borrowing" this idea and making my own! It sounds adorable! I was thinking about a little bag to keep my iPod in when I go to the gym. ^_^

Why hasn't anyone done this yet?! It sounds so cute! If you find someone making them, I want sea horses!! Time to check Etsy!

I make little creatures out of polymer clay and for ages I've been wanting to make a little octopus. I was thinking of making it a ring and bracelet so it looks like he's wrapped around your hand. Silicone would be even cooler though because it would be squishy!

Haha I make silicone octos (and other creatures) and I've had people ask me if I was going to make them into hair clips, but in my experience silicone+hair=misery. I have a plan to try putting some on wristbands though, so they can ride along with you like a little pet. My Etsy shop is on vacation right now because I'm still catching up on previous orders (including a couple very large ones) and I need to reconfigure a few things before I reactivate it. But if you like what I make, keep them in mind for when I start taking orders again :)

I mostly do those realistic ones with really detailed paint jobs, but I've also made a few into brightly colored stress-ball squishies using supersoft silicone:

Seahorses are actually on my list of things to make too, but my sculpts always take me a while because detail. And I have a huge backlog of work right now @_@

Hmm I get what you're saying -w- I'll have to try some non sticky plastic or maybe worbla..
Those are absolutely gorgeous! Please let me know when you open up though I'd really love to get a couple giant Pacifics from you

Yeah, I just figured I should mention that. Someone also once asked me if I could make my nudibranchs into earrings, which I discouraged because silicone is just so grabby. Sticky surface that attracts hair combined with eight curly octopus arms and you're not going to have a very fun time. Worbla or other thermoplastic would be a better option if you want to put it in your hair, or polymer clay as someone already mentioned.

Those are simply amazing!! I'm really looking forward to seeing you make some sea horses!! I'm imagining a hard body and a soft silicone tail that can "grab" things. Is that possible?? Or maybe a bendy element could be in the tail so the sea horses can grab things??

Theobromine
06-23-2016, 12:16 AM
Well, I could use a harder silicone for the body and a softer one for the tail, and I have some ideas about making the tail bendy (the trick is to prevent any wires from poking through the silicone). The real issue is just finding the time to sculpt one to my satisfaction!

Really?? Is it hard to work with? I sort of know how to make silicone molds, but I've never made anything out of silicone. Sorry for hijacking the thread by the way!! I was thinking I would LOVE to learn how to make full silicone tails, but looks like that would need a lot of money to start. But little accessories seems possible. ^^

It's really not hard! It just takes patience, skill, and above all practice to get really good at it, but small things are very easy to make. You can pm me if you want to ask some questions.

I think I need one of those octupus bracelets when you are up for orders again :)

Oh yeah!! I think you were one of the first to order a shark!

I also have an adorable tiny little mermaid book from Talia, guys :)

I don't wanna take over this thread with my stuff, but I do have a thread for my Etsy shop somewhere and I'll post in there when it's open again! I'm gonna try to have more premade items ready to ship because the made to order thing was getting kinda stressful. I might take a break from custom orders for a little while, but probably not forever (don't worry).

I'm looking to get some mermaid warrior pauldrons and a spear made, but I want it to be water-safe, and unsure of the design. I think Organic Armor quoted about $400 for the pauldrons, and a local 3-d printer friend (who got once a commission to make the MerNetwork logo as an actual trident) quoted about $30 for the spear head. Again, if anyone has any artistic ideas on what it would look like (while incorporating my tribal print), let me know!

I'm wanting to make a full tribal get up as well, but mine will be somewhat viking/norse inspired to go with some of my family heritage. I'm planning on arm bands, hair pieces, a belt, jewelry, weapons, and a new top.

I LOVE the tribal look!

Sadly, it's not in my heritage... or at least I think it isn't. There isn't any family information or records beyond my grandparents' generation available.

Would a dorsal fin be too out of place? I was thinking of running a line through a hollowed out dorsal to a regulator so I never had to lift my head out of the water..

I can wait to see what you're doing- I love the tribal look in your picture. My daughter is creating a tribal look and then another more princess-y look, and it makes me really want to do a tribal look too!

Ok so odd question. Can anyone make silicone like creatures or creatures made outta something soft and squishy but they need to be able to sink. I am looking for all types of sharks, squid, octa's fishies sea slugs *starfish is a must* I need these for a game I wish to play at my gigs

Mermaid Arabella
06-29-2016, 11:29 AM
If you contact one of the creators already listed, I'm sure they could add weights to their silicone creatures to make them sink. I did contact one of them, asking whether they sink or float, and was told that they're pretty neutrally buoyant, so you can pull them underwater without them floating back to the top but they wouldn't really sink on their own.
