How did you decide on your tail color/Design?

I'm quite curious on how other mers designed their tail and choose the color(s)

I personally want a blue one, Like an aqua or sapphire, But i haven't planned out the design yet (I can't draw for the life of me)
I've always loved blue, so it's a given that i would choose it. I want a traditional mermaid design wise, but maybe a little different. I plan on getting a fabric tail first, then a silicone.

I'd love to hear your stories!

My first design was actually very rushed haha. I had my order taken, paid for and Raven was ready to start a lot sooner than I was. I had no idea what I wanted so I went with the first good idea that popped into my head which was a night themed tail. When I got it I realised I look really good in blue, so all of my tails since then have been blue. With my new one it was originally very dark, more 'deep sea' colour themed by then I realised I didn't want two dark tails, I wanted a more 'torpical' blue feel so it's now very light/ bright blues/ purples and greens. I mostly stuck with cooler tones because they tend to look better on me but also because I like the cooler tones better.

I'm thinking about a tropical one, But at the same time i find sapphire so beautiful. I have yet to find out what color fits me best. Hoping it's blue lol

I sketched designs for almost a full year before I finally decided. I made a board on pinterest and collected all of the images that interested me. Then I weeded through them until I had a coherent theme. From there, it was just a matter of constant sketching. :P

One evening I looked down at my coloring (on a Mernation pattern) and that was it, my striped tail.

Then I sat on it for a while, the fluke I really wanted would have cost extra because they would have needed to make a whole new mold, it's bigger than the standard MerNation. Then one day I was replacing the lost fluke of an Ariel doll I got a few years ago from my kids and a whole new fluke pattern emerged on the back of an envelope.
I contacted Najestic Entertainment with it and they brought my tail to life

I like bright colors too, But realistic and natural ones i tend to gravitate to. It's summer here, Luckily ;)

I tell my clients to start a Pinterest board and pin all sorts of things that catch your eye. Don't dwell on it, just pin loads of things you love. Then, in a week or two, or a few hundred pins, review the board and you'll see themes emerge. Then you can compile your favorite ideas and build your dream tail!

My next tail will be darker, as my wife says I look naked in mine. ;) I'm thinking something black with abalone/mother-of-pearl coloring, as inspired by the bobtail squid:

Dan somehow it does not surprise me that you're using a squid as inspiration. It's awesome!!! As far as my tails go, I really admired Merlissa also known as "litttle orca" so I chose an orca design for my first fabric tail. The markings are actually mimiced from an Orca calf I sponsored in highschool to protect and monitor.

My second tail is red and white, this was after I had decided to try and bring my life long character OC to the mermaid world. Thus Kaguria the Kitsune mermaid, I just made a tail that looked like her fox tail.

My third and last tail was inspired by the manatee. I live in Jax Fl, the city on the river and one of the biggest manatee pod grounds in thier mirgrations. My flukes have always been rounded instead of the traditional V most go with, so I decided to keep that as my little quirk in being a mermaid and make a rubber skinned tail to mimic the manatee's skin.

When coming up with a design and colors and such make sure that it is something that inspires you! Look around and find something that speaks to you and make it your own. Every mermaid has thier own nitch in the community and it reflects in their tails. Find yours and let that current take you to new heights.

So when I was designing my tail, I had a few influences. My first silicone tail was secondhand from Mertailor, and was a beautiful burgundy and wine tone color scheme. Although I did not design that tail, I fell in love with the color. So o knew I wanted my SyrenStudios tail to be in those colors. I also feel like you don't see a lot of red/burgundy tails.

I also wanted a pattern. So I decided to take inspiration from one of my favorite aquatic characters: Abe Sapien from Hellboy. I love Abe's design. I also am friends with Doug Jones, the man behind the makeup. So I wanted to also give tribute to him and how influential he has been to me.

Lily and I talked designs via email, she came up with a sketch, and viola! Part of me wishes the stripes were more crisp and elaborate, but this was her first time doing a complicated paint job. I might touch it up down the road.

I love my stripes though! Lily did a wonderful job!


If/when I get a second tail, I'm not sure what I would base it on. I'm thinking a white or pearlescent theme with accent colors but that's as far as I've gotten. Lol

I wanted two differently colored dragons, Like yin and yang. My dad likes the idea lol. I want snakes and sharks aswell, Maybe a wolf and a snow leopard too
