I think your decision to have the tailbody be the green-blue body of a peacock and the fluke being the feathers is perfect.
Maybe a slightly leaf-shaped fluke?

Such a tail would also be perfect to do the Dai peacock dance in as merballet version!

I thought of a random dragonskin pouring question-
I know I'm just being whiny, but- I really really dislike always having to deal with opening the buckets, pour from the buckets...
anyone ever poured into other containers, so that you have smaller accessible quantities at a time? Even maybe into an empty trial size bottle or something with a screw on lid? Especially if I want to use it for painting, I'll be using SUCH tiny amounts at a time. What would I need to consider in order to find a container I could use, just so that each time I need a little I'm not dealing with a gallon bucket? Air tightness? material?

As long as the container you are using is air tight and clean (and not made of any materials that inhibits silicone curing) you should be just fine. I like large mouth jars with screw on lids because the size is so much more manageable.

So in the groove of streamlining and making this process easier, I called my local smooth on rep and asked if I could go ahead and use mineral spirits in place of the novocs solvent. She said sure...
I was about to ask- would that make it matte, or gloss? Then she finished her sentence
"sure...if you don't mind that Vocs's cause cancer.

Aeliana, the hardware store guy acted like I was an idiot when I said that- he was like- 'the voc's are what cause the odor- if it's low odor it's the same thing" then I asked if it would be glossy or matte, which he first cocked his head and said "I don't think this is what you think it is", lol, but then said if paint was matte, generally there was something added to make it lose sheen, so probably glossy.

but I think low odor is fine (and was also only a few bucks, compared to, with shipping, and minimum order, way more for the smooth on solvent)

Dude THANK you. Haha idk how I didn't get that. I've used mineral spirits before but not in a LONG time. I think I'll try the low odor mineral spirits when I do it cause I don't like driving down to Atlanta. I don't need another panic attack on the side of 85.

I have a wave. That's not Lexan is it? I have read the many warnings about not using polyzap with Lexan cause it makes it brittle and snap? I found a flexible marine grade silicone epoxy at Home Depot I was gonna try. But I'm not anywhere close to that point yet. I was definitely gonna throw it to the forum before I tried it.

Becoming a mermaid- Thank you so much!! I do some gallery work, but mostly I'm just...always making- something. It is good for me to stick with projects, because my husband got tired of me randomly painting our actual house (like the hallway gold, or I painted our stairs all different colors, lol) and his favorite is when I do photography because there is no mess, haha

Idk! I think I saw a warning on a post from PearlieMae about it. I can't wait to get back from vacation to pour the silicone! Currently we have four people and a dog in a sedan on the way to NC. I about died when my sister in law asked how my tail was going!

That sounds frickin brilliant to me. Only thing is you need to make sure the seams between the foil are super smooth - I wouldn't recommend using any kind of tape that you put the resin over cause that resin ain't messin'. (Ha!) no but really I have both masking, painter's, and duct tape stuck to my resin that I'm trying to pry out. Maybe use some double stick between the layers of foil? Right up against the edge so you won't have intense undercuts?

Absolutely. Post your progress!! Maybe make sure you secure the cardboard somehow too? So the heat from the the resin curing doesn't curl it too much.

silicone will cure against clay? I have a full sheet of lexan, I could put it over the fluke design, create the edge with clay and just a few details, and pour silicone there?

That makes sense but then wouldn't your fluke be a negative and not a positive? As in the sculpture would be a positive so pouring silicone over it means your details would be concave and not convex.. Is that the point?

Usually, but I could sculpt so that the clay makes the concave part, just a little detail around the edges, etc, because I want a lot of flat space...hmmm.

Pour the resin on the cardboard! Make sure the back of the cardboard is liquid-proofed. When you go to remove your resin mold, get the whole thing wet...soaking wet...and the cardboard will peel off easy peasy. Scrub off any stubborn paper fiber and voila! Mold. Or Mould. Whatevs.

Also, AND LISTEN TO PEARLIE, MAKE A SMALL VERSION AND RUN A TEST TO PROVE YOUR CONCEPT.

Hi, I'm a dick. Totally late to the party, but I was just reading through this thread again and realized that probably most people on this forum don't actually know what VOCs are. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. NOVOCS=No Volatile Organic Compounds.

VOCs are a huuuuuuge class of organic chemicals that readily evaporate at room temperature. (And for those who've never taken chemistry, organic chemicals (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_compound) include essentially any compound with carbon-hydrogen bonds, ranging in size from methane to alcohols to polymers to enormous biological molecules.) Volatiles (the type that evaporate readily) can be either natural or synthetic, and either hazardous or non-hazardous to human health. Some are carcinogenic (i.e. benzene) while others aren't but are hazardous in other ways (like methylene chloride, which is metabolized to carbon monoxide). Still others are the volatile aromatic compounds produced by plants that we know collectively as essential oils (many of which can also be dangerous in high concentrations). Sooo yeah..TL;DR VOCs are pretty hard to make generalizations about.

I just went and peered myopically at the NOVOCS MSDS (https://www.smooth-on.com/msds/files/NOVOCS_Matte.pdf) on the Smooth-On website. It appears that NOVOCS is composed entirely of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), which is a common reagent in organic compound synthesis. It also sure as heck looks like an organic molecule to me, but it's been over a decade since I took organic chem :P Regardless, according to the MSDS and to the safety info I looked up on Sigma Aldrich, the primary hazards of HMDSO are its flammability, and high environmental toxicity, especially to aquatic life. So...be careful with it, use adequate ventilation and other safety precautions, and DON'T DUMP IT DOWN THE SINK.

I think I also figured out a way to paint the fluke so that the feathers look realistic-ish... doubt I will work on it that often, but I'm looking forward to it, and will be working for a while on doing some painting for the fluke:)

Sorry to further derail this thread, but I just thought this was interesting: I was reading the Wikipedia article for hexamethyldisiloxane and it says "It is used in liquid bandages (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_bandage) (spray on plasters) such as cavilon spray, to protect damaged skin from irritation from other bodily fluids. It is also used to soften and remove adhesive residues left by medical tape and bandages, without causing further skin irritation." So...I guess it's pretty safe for skin contact even though it's not recommended in the MSDS (prolonged skin contact can cause mild irritation). I'm pretty sure what they mean by No VOCS is no carcinogenic VOCs, but now I feel like I'm just being pedantic. Anyway, I feel like I learned something useful.

And I didn't even mention yet how blown away I am by the gorgeousness of those new scales. Simple, but REALLY effective. The subtle color variations on each scale and the gradation of colors from scale to scale, wow.

Regarding my problem with 3am...
I had started a crown a couple weeks ago, but hadn't really played with it since, because it was JUST SO STABBY. I didn't make a *real* crown, I just started gluing stuff to a *coathanger crown*.
coat hanger crowns are about as good an idea as coat hanger....
i don't even know.
anyway, because of its efficiency in creating a headache in 20 seconds out of thin air, able to last an hour, I kicked it to the curb in favor of nice, sparkly, not stabby silicone.
Tonight I was just thinking- I should have made a crown out of silicone instead (thought in a glaring, accusatory way, toward the crown)
But THEN- I realized that to work on the crown, I could put some scales under the puncture wound-ish parts and keep working on it

Aww, thanks. Do it, make that tail!!! Your colors are spot on for real peacock and that's impressive! I also wanted to put peacock eyes in the fluke initially too but couldn't quite picture how it would work; I'd love to see someone bring a peacock tail fluke into reality. I think that's a great idea for the body as well, to have smaller delicate scales like the smaller body feathers on a peacock. :D
