changing the opacity of vinyl shelf liner

so, i'm not sure if i'm alone in this, but for years now i've wished there was a way to make ribbed shelf liner less clear. it's nice on its own, don't get me wrong, but if there was a way to make vinyl fins whiter in color, or even fade from white to clear? that'd be fantastic. i've certainly spent a lot of time looking into ways to paint shelf liner, all of which were fairly risky and didn't give me the results i wanted.

well. turns out a solution was staring me right in the face. it's texture.

if you rough up the back side of ribbed shelf liner, you can make it more opaque. just take some sand paper and rub it on the back of your vinyl. the ribs and glossy surface remain intact on the front, but now it's not clear! check it out...

i was worried the sand paper would make the back of the plastic too rough to handle, but it actually made it very soft to touch! just rinse off any powder left over from sanding, and you're good to go! however, be aware that the sanded side is no longer shiny. if you're worried about scratches showing through, i'd recommend starting with a finer grain of sand paper! i was kind of sloppy testing this since i just wanted to see if it worked lol

if anyone wants a quick explanation for why this works:
because the surface is rough, light waves change direction as they hit it rather than passing through. and they also scatter in different directions, which makes the surface a matte white rather than reflective like water or a mirror. essentially, the rougher your surface, the less see-through it is!

that's not really revolutionary science, but i just wanted to point it out in case anyone else might come up with something based on the same principle! i personally couldn't believe i'd overlooked something so simple for so long... just wanted to share my findings with you guys!

I didn't even know such a product existed. This is great and the ribbing looks like good ole fishbone in fin. I can totally see someone cutting some dips between the ribs and tapering the edges for some good pelvic or dorsal fins. :jawdrop:
