Well... that did NOT go as planned... (making my first neoprene tail)

So I've been super excited this week because:
~ My Trainer 1 monofin arrived and my first swim with it was amazing - I literally zoomed!
~ The neoprene I ordered off eBay came (and I love the red color with my pink Mahina Merfin) (my fist tail sleeve will go with the Mahina).
~ One of my best friends helped me take measurements.
~ I made a really cute finned arm band test and I love it (even if I did mess up and cut the two outside pieces so they're different colors (forgot to flip the pattern and just turned it instead...)). (Though I think one layer would be sufficient on my arm - two is just too thick for my itty bitty wrist...)

Then came today - I had the day off work so I went to her house to borrow her cat-free floor space to make my pattern and cut everything out. I calculated how to make my pattern (I wanted to make it for 1/2 of each side rather than a full side so it would take up less room and use less paper).

And then came the issues... The pattern piece was huge! I expected it to be wider than me since it's 2D and I'm not. I should have realized something was wrong when I held the piece up to myself and it went halfway around me. But I didn't. I was too excited.

I laid the pattern onto my fabric, started tracing and realized that I couldn't get two layers out like I had wanted (I have 2mm neoprene and I kind of want to try 4mm since it's closer in thickness to my scuba wetsuit then). I could get the pattern on 1.5 times... So I re oriented the fabric cut a good 8.5 inches off my fluke so it would fit and traced it again, still only managing 1.5 times... So I just decided to go with making my tail one 2mm layer. Then I happily cut out the pieces. And promptly sandwiched myself between them to check the fit.

I was literally swimming in it...

And then it hit me - I was supposed to divide my measurements by 4, NOT by 2... I had made each pattern piece half of me and thus each side I cut out was my whole measurements... I am so frustrated and mad at myself that I'm having to try not to cry...

I know too big is better than two small... but I feel like I've wasted a ton of fabric and I'm not even sure I can get 2 more cutouts of my tail out of the remaining neoprene (even with a smaller pattern - which I have to make and can't until Tuesday).

I'm trying to remain positive - after all, I once considered the idea of a tail with a single seam - guess now is my chance to try it. If it doesn't end up working, I can just cut the piece down to size and sew it with two side seams.

This will definitely be a learning curve and the first very important lesson is: DO NOT RUSH IN YOUR EXCITEMENT! (And as my Mom quoted when I told her, "Measure twice, cut once.")

I wish you lots of luck! I made a spandex fin first (because less expensive and more forgiving) and i had to change my pattern a lot before moving on to neoprene, so i feel your pain! Of course.. I was also an idiot that wanted a stripe down the back and tried to take the "easy route" ending up with a box instead of a tail...

The plus side of that was learning that if I want to do a back only seam, I would need to have angled the waist (when I lined the waist front to my waist the back seam was by my butt...) So, back to the drawing board (literally) and time to cut the two pieces down to my actual half-size... Looks like two seams it is (way easier to wrap my head around anyway...)

Guess I'll also be heading to the dive center and hoping they have wetsuit repair glue/tape before trying again... (Originally I was planning on just reinforcing the inside with repair tape.) Otherwise I'll have to order online and wait for shipping...

Is it that one piece can wrap all the way around you? If so, you could do one back seam and then cut off the monofin skin, use the other piece to remake the monofin skin so it's tighter, bigger flowier etc and then sew that all back together?

Moongazer - It does go all the way around me, but it didn't lie right when I tested doing a partial back seam (maybe it would've fit if I'd sewed the whole seam). Also, I already cut one of the pieces down to the right size, so I might as well just go that route (though I might still try one back seam at some point).

I meant to post an update last night but fell asleep before I remembered.

Monday was rough... I was so upset by the fails Sunday night that not only could I not even relax enough to try and sleep until after 1am, I tossed and turned until 4:20am when I just said screw it and gave up... Then I forced myself into work that morning. My boss sent me home at 2:30 since I was so tired (and I'm so grateful because I really could not function at all and was barely able to get anything done anyway). Thankfully I also had Tuesday off which meant I could sleep in a bit more.

Anyway, I did manage to get the glue I wanted at one of the local scuba stores. And I also decided to go ahead and try glueing the back seam on the giant piece I hadn't cut down to size yet. I'll have to cut that part off to make it the right size if it doesn't work anyway, so I might as well try, right? I should be able to get more of the same color neoprene too (talked to the eBay seller).

The seaming went... okay... It turns out that some of the seal cement had cured inside the nozzle tip and in trying to get it out I ended up creating a hole in the side... So I ended up having to use the hole as the opening (which got kinda messy - thankfully not on me).

Then I finally managed to get the nozzle unclogged and the hole semi-cured (and covered in multiple layers of gorilla tape). Unfortunately, it opened while I was holding it over my tail...

Dad tried to help by using acetone (which worked to clean the brush I was using) to get some of it off but he ended up being a bit too rough and the fabric covering the neoprene is a bit worn, some of it has come a bit loose, and the acetone left a large stain (even after I scrubbed it with soap and water)... (To be fair the black streaks are now more of a dark grey and much smaller, but still...)

Overall I think the glue will work well and I have iron-on wetsuit seam repair tape coming in the mail (ordered it Monday morning since they recommended ordering before 6:15am Monday, Wednesday, or Friday for fastest shipping and it was 5:30am by that point). That should have reinforce it.

Also, look at the adorable "mermicorn" one of my co-workers/managers gave me! (It's apparently from a blind box collection he's working on but he thought I'd like this one. Keep in mind I've told no one at work yet about my obsession with mermaids or making a tail. It's even more perfect because I love jellyfish and unicorns too :D

So two steps forward, one step back - or something along those lines.

I spend a good chunk of Saturday (morning/early afternoon) gluing the back seam on my tail (managed to get to just below my butt before having to leave for work). Basically set up an ironing board in the driveway to use as a work table with good ventilation while listening to an audiobook and gluing. Unfortunately I did get a tiny bit sunburned working outside (didn't think to put on sunblock - oops).

Then tonight I couldn't help myself. I tried it on for the first time since that awful Sunday night last week. And it's... not a total failure but it's a bit wonky... The section for the calves (and likely the section for the butt if I'd actually glued that) sticks up awkwardly and basically gives me a sort of calf dorsal. (And I totally camouflaged into my bed there, didn't I?:help:).

So, looks like I'll be cutting this piece down to the proper size and then seaming it together like I originally planned. This weekend is out since we'll be camping... Maybe late next week... :fallover:

Lookig good thougg! Any progress is progress. Also, if you put it on inside out you can pin the sections where they need to be glued, glue, and then trim. So that could save you time!

I'd have to have someone else pin it since I can't contort myself enough to reach my calves while lying on my stomach...
On the other hand, if I do go ahead and cut it down, I can cut off the damaged section near the ankles.
I might at some point try a back seam tail only but with my new 1/4 pattern and a measured rectangle section in between them (the angles aren't as sharp on pattern 2.0).

Other learning curves so far:

~ Trying to put on my marina after getting into the tail skin: No wonder people struggle to get their feet into foot pockets O_O* And I could reach from the outside too... I expected it be difficult but also easy at the same time, I think. Just wow. At least otherwise it was really easy to get on (here's to hoping it's not actually too big...).

~ My attempts to make my mermaid top haven't been all that successful either... I want to try the last pattern again but in a bigger size to see if that helps. Otherwise I'm just going to try a different pattern that I have in my head. Basically I want to make an implied nude net drape top and I have the net (see my last picture - I used it to cover my bum). The trouble I'm having is coming in the nude under cami/bralette that I'm trying to make. I made the first version too small and the straps feel really insecure... My next idea is a bandeau with a neckline that matches that of the net part. I'll update about my top progress too when I have more.

Oh and I forgot to mention last night but the eBay seller I got my neoprene from listed more! I can actually get more of both the red/purple I'm using and the maroon/navy I bought to use later (and since I love all 4 colors, I could actually make one of each). I might need to wait until payday though... (Renaissance Faire pretty much cleaned out my wallet this past Sunday...)

Sounds like you are on the right track! I wish i could help you with how to put the foot pockets on, i have NO experience with that type of monofin. Your top sounds like it will be really cute when done, sorry its giving you trouble. And yay for ebay and yay for the renaissance fair!! I hope you had s lot of fun.

Well... I tried to make version 2 (sewn) and got as far as making a new (properly sized) pattern and cutting it out with some extra fabric at the end to cover the top part of my mahina merfin (to hide the foot pockets). But that's as far as I git before realizing that the piece of neoprene I'd used wasn't actually big enough to cover the fin after all. And I have no idea how to fix it yet. I'm about ready to just give up. I know I'll try again at some point because I really want this, but it'll probably take me a while again... It's been almost a year since I last really worked on it and at this rate it might be that again. I was really hoping to have it done for going to the lake this weekend since that's my main chance to use it, but since that's not going to happen this year I might as well wait until next year. I can't seem to get this right and I have no idea what I'm doing. I can picture the construction steps in my head but can't translate them into reality. Maybe I'm just not meant to be a mermaid...

I have a tail! It's too big because I underestimated the stretch and I swam right out of it. But nonetheless I have my first fabric tail. I put aside the neoprene for now because working with it has been giving me major anxiety... Tomorrow I'll take my new tail in and try again. And maybe I'll be able have a neoprene tail for the lake house next year. I'll post pictures tomorrow once I get home and have my computer.

You are the only other person I've seen besides myself and my local mers who have made a tail with the V over the fluke instead of covering the entire monofin. Was that a deliberate design or the result of cutting fabric wrong? Personally I think it looks great with the Mahina monofin, and its so convenient for getting on and off. I'm surprised I don't see more mers do it! How does yours close at the bottom? I use a button, but mine in spandex not neoprene.

So, I'm still not ready to work with the neoprene I bought two years ago. I learned a lot with the purple spandex tail skin I made for my Mahina last summer and I want to make sure I can make a properly fitting fabric tail before moving on to neoprene. So, this year, I'm going to try using some scuba knit. In the meantime, I'm trying out the fin shape I designed way back for my dream tail. I won't be doing the colors/patterning on this tail though, just the shape.

I took pictures and wanted to post them, but for some reason the forum refuses to cooperate... Even when I scaled it down until it was under 100kb, I still kept getting an error message that my file was 2.2mb over the quota...
