Hey guys! I'm new to this network, and I saw that lots of people were posting about their tailmaking process - but didn't see anyone working with neoprene and latex, so I thought I'd give it a go!
We're making two tails for the second season of our YouTube Series, and it took me a long time to decide what materials to use. I ended up deciding against silicone because this is our first time doing this and I didn't want to mess up! :p
Apparently, latex is not only cheaper, but it is also easier to work with. And I understand it's longevity may not match silicone's, but we only need it to last for ten episodes of mostly dry work.
To give proper credit, I would like to say that even though the research and planning were done by me, the actual tailmaking work is being executed by three very talented graduates of the Cinema Makeup School in Hollywood!
So far we have:
Taken measurements of the actress
Made two small scale sheets out of foam stickies
Made molds from the foam scale sheets with ultracal
Started molding the fluke with wed clay (I think that's what it's called?)
We plan to start building up layers of the latex in the ultracal mold, as well as making a mold of the fluke. Then we will sew the sleeve out of neoprene around the monofin and attach the scale sheets and latex fluke pieces. & Then go over it with latex mixed with acrylic to create a gradient color.
Below are some pictures! Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions or thoughts! Thank you so much & thanks for being so welcoming on the mernetwork :)
