Darn kids and their imaginative minds...

SO I thought this could be a cool, funny, and helpful thread for professional mermaiding. I'm about ready to actually start and have been thinking of questions kids could possibly ask so I could be at least somewhat prepared, and thinking back on the few times I've interacted with them as a mermaid and what those ones asked. So if you have memories of questions kids asked you, especially ones that caught you off guard, and the answer you gave, please share, I'm sure it could help another mer and/or give a laugh. Haha

Three years ago, my first child/mer-interaction, one asked me, "What's your name?" I said, "Caspiana." She said, "I'll just call you Mermaid.
And there is ONE of the reasons I'm changing my name to something easier. Lol

Trust me in the past 7 years I've only had a handful call me lanai, kids will always say mermaid because its easier for them, I suppose.

Lol I'll do this in rapid succession because that's how kids are- god speed:

What part of the ocean are you from? Do you know Ariel? Are there scary monsters down there? Do you know any other mermaids/mermen, what are their names? How can you breathe/how long can you hold your breath? Can you come on land, if so how? Do you have any human friends? What do you eat? Do you talk to fish? how old are you? Can I be a mermaid too? Do you have any pets like we do? Can you tell us a story about your adventures, (always be prepared with 2 stories) Does your tail change color? Do you know the mermaids from h20/Mako Mermaids? (i dont so i ask them to tell me)

(in my case im married and hubby is my mertender so i get a bunch of "how did you two find each other? how did you get married? do you have any merbabies?" etc)

I told some little girls today that when I'm on land I can shed my tail like a snake sheds it's skin but unlike a snake, mermaid magic let's me put it back on. As for if you know Ariel, I'd say it's safe to say yes because we all know Ariels story enough to talk about it if asked.

Not at all. Yeah I tried to hide when I was fighting it on but still heard it across the creek "look, a mermaid" and when I took it off I had it laying beside my lawn chair so there was no hiding it.

Well considering 'My mersona of Mermaid Lanai is a Princess' I usually tell the kids Ariel's my distant cousin who lives in another kingdom with Melody and Eric and i rarely see them.

Coming on land, well I have a special shell that was given to me by the Magical ocean Mother who is like what they call a fairy godmother. The shell is enchanted and i let the kids know once the shell comes off, it may take a while but eventually I will have legs to walk like they do. And then I have to put it back on if i want to be a mermaid again. The shell doesn't work for humans though.

At the beach you can say your like a selkie, selkie is a different type of mermaid that can shed their skins (definitely google info on selkies its pretty cool, - Song of the sea is a selkie movie if you ever want to watch, but she turns into a seal like mermaid :D)

As for stories I take from my own actual life, rescuing marine mammals and birds, meeting strange sea animals, etc. But I also ask kids to tell me stories too, its actually quite fun as to how they get so imaginative.

And I also make dolphin clicks, Whale exhales and Calls which is hilarious when a kid says " Your not a real mermaid, you cant speak dolphin prove it.." and they just stare at me wide eyed and confused after ..

That's really cool. I'd love to learn the dolphin clicks and whistles. I'm pretty good with making sounds but I haven't tried dolphin.

So I got asked "You're a pregnant mermaid?!? How to mermaids get pregnant and have babies?!?"

Me and my husband froze.

I responded with "the men, merman or not, have to present the mermaid with a special shell, and the mermaid eats it and it gives her a baby!"

Of course there's no filter to children
"How does it come out?"
Another little girl saw her mother give birth to her little sister in a water birth and said
"Human babies come out of the mommys vagina, but I don't see your vagina so how does it come out?"

Oh God. I was sweating at this point.

There was a post I saw a while back that's been circulating around facebook, and essentially someone asked a marine expert how mermaids would-scientifically speaking- have babies. His answer was that they would have a big gathering and all have a giant orgy

Someone smiled at us, told my daughter she had a cute dress, and then told him he had my eyes. The person was steps away when he asked, "wait, I thought I look like dad?" and I said, he does, but he has traits from both of us. He said "yes, because I have both your DNA, right?" I said, yes. Then he LOUDLY asked (as if he had had this huge revelation) "BUT HOW DID DAD'S DNA GET IN YOUR UTERUS??"
THAT is a very specific question.
To which EVERYONE looked up to see my answer.
And my answer was- "I know! isn't that amazing?"
because hell no was I going to finish opening that can of worms.
Don't teach your kids anything.
It just leads to more questions.
In front of strangers.
In public places.

Kids man. they say the craziest things.

I get some odd comments in my swim lessons, but nothing that amusing. mostly asking about my hair. or why I only wear glasses on some days (apparently some preschoolers dont understand contacts).

Mostly I just get the mermaid boob-poke. kids have an ENTIRE TAIL IN FRONT OF THEM. What do they want to touch? the silicone top. or the shell top. or the necklace. Always the boobage area. If its a little boy, the parents usually just laugh it off. I tend to ignore it or subtly relocate their hand. or hold out the pendant/necklace that they are investigating.

Personally, I don't think I'm as worried about that, as it's easy to distract a kid with another piece of the mersona, but I think I'm more worried about the wandering eyes of adults. Lol Especially being for a lack of better words "gifted" (mor a curse really but oh well) in the boobage area. Haha
But yeah, kids. Say and do the darnedest things. ��
