Tail traumatics and triumphs

Well...I hope for an eventual triumph... several months ago I got what I thought was a good deal on a tail...it arrived with...some issues.

Im not going to go too far into that as I am still trying to win some restitution from the maker, they are offering to make a new one if I send mine back... but im not sure id have better luck with a second one so it may just be throwing good money after bad with the shipping.

Anyway while I sort out what to do with this I need a nicer tail. I do a lot of performing and production and really need one of the super nice jobbies. Since I work in the arts $3500 is a lot for me... but im crafty as all git out, so I guess ill try my hand at making one which I had planned to do eventually anyway.

The price of the materials is no small hurdle either. Im definitely leaning towards individual scales over sheet style. Im still learning about how to affix and paint the individual scale type. It seems a lot of threads go from pinning to finished product and skip in between of how they attach. Maybe it goes quicker at that point so it gets more exciting [emoji6]

Im still really undecided about color. I have always wanted a cerulean and copper tail...but its so dark and I wonder if I shouldnt make something flashier that shows up in the dark waters of the northwest...

I have what might be different needs than others...I dont want seams and wrinkles as much as possible even with a lot of active movement. I also want a smaller more light weight fluke than most it seems.... I have a few thoughts on how to go about that...

Any hoo...this is sort of a long intro but im going to make a few tails and I thought id make a thread for them.

Since im either selling or returning or exchanging or something my silicone tail, ill be making a tail out of sequin fabric as a tide over until I sort out my materials and coloring of my silicone tail.

As a monofin I'm going to use the one from my fabric tail. It was originally acrylic and broke 20 minutes into my first swim. So I took an office chair floor mat, the kind that lets you roll around on carpet. I cut it to shape with metal sheers and snipped the little floor grippers down. Then I coated it in a layer of duct tape and make duct tape foot pockets for comfort and control and then put it in the neoprene cover that came on the original. It has been awesome because its lightweight but with a really effective push but its pretty indestructible if I stand on it or balance on the edge in the water. And it was free and easy to make so I can try things like standing on the edge. Not having to worry about damage to the fluke possibly adds to the illusion of realism.

The sequin fabric has been shipped and I finally have working sewing machines for the first time in over 2 years (I was so excited I made 2 pairs of pants and 2 shorts today and I just got the machines back today) anyway ill post about the fabric tail as I make it.
