Mermaid tankless! Rent for event? How did you do it?

Hello! :)

I have an event in exactly one year (it happens every year, so it doesn't matter if I can attend the year after) that I would like to perform at (nature conservation and violence against animals). It is in Germany. However, I would like to be in a mermaid-tank, as it seems more spectacular for a mermaid to swim than to sit around (personal opinion). :) It doesn't cost to perform, but I would like to collect funds for ocean conservation charity (not a charity chosen yet).
How and where in Germany (it's in Munich) do you rent a tank? Do you have to build one, and if so, which companies make things like these? I'm thinking about sponsoring to finance it. How much will it approx. be? How did you do it?

There's no short answer to this really to be honest with you but I will give it a shot.

As far as Germany goes, I know of no tanks that are there.

It's my understanding that tank cost can be anywhere from 6-10 thousand dollars.

You would have to find a maker there who's willing to take on a massive project like tanks tend to be, you would also need to consider a way to transport it, set it up, fill it at events, drain it, sanitize and filter the water, and then store it. Again....there is a ton of work involved in tanks.

For one single event, this isn't something I would recommend looking into.

tanks can cost even more than that. when I won my grant we went to every company that makes large ones in north America. you're looking at 10-50k. Depending on the size, the cost goes up expentionally when you want the tank to be deeper (tall glass) than if you want it to be longer. Plus it's not just the physical tank. You need a stand. If it's going to be stagnate- a pump. And a trailer for moving it.

I know some mers have rented dunk tanks and if you have a flexible monofin you can usually fit into that.

Be careful who you buy from. Even people experienced in making smaller tanks or metalworks or different types of pools can underestimate the work and complexity of a tank this size. Anyone who says they can do it cheaper than I'd say 10K is suspect.

(Spoken from experience, we have a hunk of metal sitting in a garage somewhere, and a transparent pool that never showed up.)

We pretty much just do dry or have a standard above ground pool now.

Not sure about Germany prices, but in the U.S. an acrylic tank large enough for a mermaid to move around in, and withstand the water pressure, is closer to $8,000-$12,000 USD. That's what I've been quoted for a mid-sized acrylic mermaid tank. You also have to take into account the weight of the water. The tank cannot sit on uneven ground, and the water will need to be treated and filtered. So you have to factor in the costs of a filter and chlorine tablets. (and depending on the time of year, potentially a heater as well).

That being said, have you considered a dunk tank? depending on how large your fluke is, some mermaid an fit inside a dunk tank fairly easily. You also have the option of sitting on the seat, or going to the viewing window. I know you can buy a 600gal dunk tank for about $900 USD (plus shipping). They are lightweight, mobile and SO MUCH EASIER to maintain and handle than an acrylic tank. Many party companies will also rent a dunk tank for a decent daily rate. You can always try contacting local party companies and asking if they offer that.

Dunk tanks are easier to drain, so you could drain it every night, eliminating the need for a filter or chlorine tablets. However, if the tank will remain filled for more than one day, i highly recommend treating the water.

They do custom ones, too, and they are collapsible. I thought about a 3m length, 3m width and 2m height one. With windows nearly as large as one side and on on every side. My grandfather has a large pond, but since he is going for a smaller one now, I get his old filter (which still works very well). I think if I drained it every day or every few days on the festival (I'll stay there for 3 weeks) it seems like a waste of water (and it is a environment conservation festival too). So thank you for the mention of the filter!
However, I have no idea about chlorine tablets. Where should I ask which type, how many etc.?

I would like to know everything needed about tanks, to be prepared.

Do you think I should change something in the way I'm thinking about this?
Maybe a reinforcement of the steel frame and the vinyl would be good because of the size.

I would be careful using a dunk dank with soft sides, like the vinyl one you mentioned. Remember it was built for DUNKING not swimming.
Mermaid tails displace a alot of water, and you are going to be moving around, and moving that water around. The tank needs to have reinforced sides for both 1)" the amount of water you are considering, and 2) the fact that you will be pushing that water around with your tail. Soft sided tanks are probably not your best bet. I would stick with a hard-sided dunk tank, or look into above ground pools. That's an option I hadn't considered until Thalassa mentioned it.
