View Full Version : My individual scale tail attempt

Be warned this post is image heavy
So I've been in love with individual scale tails since PearlieMae made one for the first time and have since been following every thread I can find. I can finally start my tail so I decided to start a thread of my own to help keep me going and to hopefully help others :)
So the first thing I did was sketch out an idea. I had a sketch of a fluke from another tail I wanted to make a couple years ago in mind and used it as inspiration to make this
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/697190c756229f3d483c374b0f5e1b90.jpg
Then I headed to Joanns to pick up some *power mesh, which was $12.99 a yard but I had a 40% off coupon and only paid $9.33, and basically made a fabric tail out of that for my base!
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/39e9ec59720add17e64a60fe4712f246.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/eff842b94c1d50d97a373573d974e680.jpg
Power mesh is super annoying to sew, make sure you use a ton of pins!
Then, I went to micheals and got 20 pounds of natural water based clay and Home Depot and got all my fiberglass resin and cloth
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/b22a95424fb343144de75daee88f9fdb.jpg
Set up my work space and traced my fluke onto the table*
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/1e63eef9df2b0d8c5bba4862069c1d8b.jpg
And then I started sculpting!*
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/fbfc5ad61c2f7b1681fd694b9d2cdecd.jpg
About five and a half hours later I had this!*
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/5b1203e47360c77c3e05a4f838b0f7ac.jpg
Then I sculpted out some scale ideas and hope tomorrow to do some fiberglass tests and sculpt some fins!*

So I got around to doing my scale molds and side fin just a test cause I've never worked with fiberglass before and got this!
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/6ddfc432ababd81b9bd943fecd319b88.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/c1b32434f823458199eb951725585151.jpg
So those didn't come out so well, so I tried again
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/7b5c7fee55593ba0bddadb251c912152.jpg
This came out much better and I was confident enough to take on my fluke...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160712/152b16562f3a5640afabadc13093e355.jpg
So I don't have enough fiberglass but I'm getting more tonight and read that you can add more layers later on. So far it looks okay so fins crossed it comes out alright!
I chose to use fiberglass because it was much easier to find then shell shock and is cheaper but I've come to learn a few things.
No matter how careful you are it will get everywhere and on everything, including you. It dries a lot faster then one may think, and it smells, a lot. The smell also seeps into everything and settles into your house and trust me your family will not be happy about it. I would have done my fluke mold outside but I really didn't have a choice cause it was already sculpted on the table and I didn't want to risk breaking it.
I'll try and keep this thread updated and post when I finish my mold!

Saving money on supplies that stink and make everyone in your house hate you is kind of false economy, no? But, you've already got this far, good luck with the rest! :D
Here's a trick, next batch of scales, put them onto a flat layer of clay and press them down so no molding material gets under it. Then make a clay wall around the whole business and pour your resin into your 'clay bowl of scales'. Once it cures, the clay should come right off without having to dig!

Thanks! I'll have to try that :)

Another tip! scraping the clay out of my resin was a real pain, but I used some vegetable oil and a toothbrush to help break down the clay and it really helped! Since your clay is water based you might could just use water and a toothbrush to break it down. :)

Wow this is the first update in a long time! Life got in the way and this tail got out at the end of my list of things to do, but I just got my paycheck and I am all over getting stuff done! So the second I had money I went and got fiberglass and finished my mold,

Love fiberglass but I was literally covered in it today and no one is happy about the smell again but now I'm done so yay! Now they'll just have to deal with silicone!
Next week I'm going to look at pearl ex pigments and picking a solid color scheme, I'm so excited!!
MermaidIndie
09-06-2016, 11:40 PM
Got my pigment today! Don't have pictures but I decided on a blue, gold and orange color scheme! I also decided that my scales we're going to be too small so I found a egg shaped cookie cutter and fell in love with the bigger scales.
38997
I still have to sketch out my new idea at some point, maybe tomorrow. Hopefully i will be getting my silicone by the end of this month, I'm so excited!
I have a question too, while at the store today they were out of pearl ex blue but had this other dye that they guy said could work, any experience with the kind of pigment in the picture below?

I don't think it'll work with silicone, and it will stain you and everything it touches. It's a dye and it's supposed to soak into a material. Silicone encapsulates pigment, it doesn't absorb dye.
I could be wrong, but I have a strong suspicion that it's a fail.
Plus, it might inhibit curing. Only way to tell is to do a small test! Good luck!

Oh, that actually makes a lot of sense. I'll order pearl ex online just to be safe. Thanks PearlieMae!

Dear Indie, I concur with Pearlie that it's not a very safe thing. I've made bad experiences with liquid dyes and silicone. Either it doesn't cure at all, or it cures to quickly and ends up loosing all its flexibility. Either way it Never produced a nice even color. All in all I wasted a lot of money on those tries. :D
I'd strongly advise to get dry, powder pigments for the purpose of silicone coloring.

the six notches on the side of the bucket lid need to be cut. I use wire cutters because they are safe than a knife. Then lift each section going around the bucket one at a time. Do this on a clean floor and keep something handy nearby to scrape it up in case you spill it.

If you're talking about what I thibkg you're talking about, its the expiration date on the silicone. You have to use the silicone before the expiration date otherwise it cures oddly (or not at all). I left some silicone sit for a long time before using it again and it... Started curing while I was stirring it (which it was supposed to take 4-5 hours to cure) and when it did fully cure it was strange and... It looked like there was oatmeal in it.
Depending on your natural surroundings, it may last longer than the shelf life or shorter since heat/humidity/cold effects the silicone.

I think as long as you clean the old silicone thoroughly so there's no dirt, residue, etc. you'll be fine. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you still need ideas on colors, I recommend looking at real fish and their patterns. That way, you'll know exactly what you're doing, be even more natural looking, and be even more "real". I'm obsessed when mers are a single breed of fish, or a hybrid of just two. When I can't figure out what type of fish the mer's tail is, I just think they've been mixed in breed so much that they're like mutts. Which is how rainbow tails and all the magical colored tails we have happens. That's how I like to think about it.
Anyhow, whatever you choose, or imagine, it will be beautiful, and I can't wait to see it!

So I have a question for all silicone tail makers. I sandwiched my fluke on my own and since it was my first time doing it I left serval large air pockets in my fluke and now I don't know how to fix it. If that's even possible.
Any suggestions?

So! Update!
I sliced open the bottom of my fluke with a razor blade and some elbow grease. Now when I get my silicone I'm just going to paint a thin layer in with a paintbrush and more firmly secure it together. I am worried about it not sticking to my monofin and that causing more air pockets. I know there's no solid way to connect the two but has anyone else had a problem with it?

Next! My power mesh fits perfectly with the overlay I left it over my foot pockets and I'll be attaching the two pieces soon, meanwhile I've been laying scales which has been an incredibly tedious and back hurting experience and I'm not even close to being done. The struggle is real. Anddd my five hour cure time is driving me crazy, why oh why did I not get fast.

So as I approach the end of this project I thought now would be a good time to take a little bit of a break and share some helpful tips and tricks I have learned over the past year. I've made many mistakes and been pleasantly surprised, so I wanted to offer some advice on how to maybe avoid the mistakes.
1. Fiberglass is the greatest thing ever. It is incredibly pungent and you get the fiberglass buzz but I have found it to be incredibly forgiving as a mold medium. (Tip) if you go with the fiberglass route get Bondo Fiberglass Filler, it'll be your best friend.
2. Craftsmart water based clay is a great clay to work with as it's very soft and you can get ten pounds at Michaels for $9.99. I've enjoyed working with it and it's definitely easy smooth out. The only disadvantage to monster makers is that is does dry out and you also can't melt it all. But I haven't had any other problems.
3. You will never have enough of anything. I thought I meticulously planned out everything I would need and ended up at Home Depot about nine times. I've somehow managed to go trough almost two full gallon orders which I don't understand either [emoji38] so be prepared to get more of everything.
4. Actual advice I didn't know I would need until I experienced it. Watch the context in which you discuss mermaid tail issues. For example, I was once standing in a Joann Fabrics and asked my mom if we had duct tape and zip ties. I was talking about a fluke extension, but by the look on the ladies face in front of me I was going to kidnap someone.
5. The UPS/Fed Ex dude will wonder why boxes with Hazard material labels are constantly in the mail to your house. He won't say it, but I see you UPS dude.
6. The smooth on reps are incredibly helpful when you get stuck with silicone issues.
7. If you or a parent or relative or someone has a Home Depot/ ace hardware card, steal it. Trust me, you will be there more often then you think purchasing a number of things such as acetone, paint thinner, packing tape, zip ties; paint sticks, drop cloths, Etc.
8. Your family/ significant other/ roommate will not appreciate the silicone in the freezer, nor that one sticky spot you can't get off the floor. Ignore them.
9. Silicone attracts pet hair like nobody's business. I've tried to keep my dogs away from my workspace as much as possible but there is still dog hair in my silicone buckets. Seriously, a dog could sneeze in Alaska and still somehow end up in your silicone in Connecticut. Accept it as a fact of life.
10. Do not put acetone in a foam cup. You think you won't do it but you will at some point. My mother did not appreciate that disaster. Also, don't forget that you have plastic measuring spoons in acetone. They dissolve.
11. Last piece of advice for now. Walk away from the project if you need to. Take a break for a few weeks, you may have a deadline but if you miss it it is okay. Take your time and be careful, you will be happier later with a mold that took you three days then a mold you rushed. One last thing. There's a great post by Mermaid Wesley (I'm so sorry if I spelt that wrong) you should really read if you are considering taking on this project. This is not easy, nor is it cheap. You will put hundreds of man hours into this project and still make mistakes, you can't be a perfectionist. Take this on if you love to craft and take on big projects and figure things out. Do it because you know you'll be challenged but it'll be worth it. Not because it's easy

Thanks guys! That's so sweet! So update!
Slime coat is done, it's um, drippy? Sort of. I'm happy with it but some places for sure look like it got rained on.
Dorsal is done and siliconed on, It just needs some detail work and then it's done!
Then I just need to put in some filler scales where they don't quite cover the edge of my scales and I'm all set!!! I'm thinking either today or tomorrow!!

Watching now! Cant wait to see it done! I'm new and I am just starting to get ready for a silicone tail. I just finished my scales and was at some point going to try them out in a plaster mold.

I am on fire with this updates!
So I drew some inspiration from a tail raven once made for how to cover scales at the base of a dorsal fin. It works really well with my tail and personally thinks it looks dope

So the thread is alive again! Ive been putting off this project for a couple of months because I knew how much it would hurt my soul. I had to cut the back of my tail open to resize it and am now awaiting silicone to come in the mail. Lets hope this all plays out how I think it will

Thanks @DancingJohari!!!
So its done! I finished up the back seam!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180606/b778e543f0c4df8ccdd3e77013d56ab9.jpg
It doesnt look the greatest but hey I can still swim in it!!!! The newest problem is Im finding I made the waistline wayyyyy too low, and extending it is going to be a major pain in the fish *facepalm*
My feet are also slightly too wide to fit comfortably into my finis wave monofin, which is something I cant really fix. Honestly Im starting to think she may be better rehomed to a slightly shorter mer with smaller feet [emoji38]
