Although i finished my first tail only 2 months ago, becauss of misyakes i made in the process the tail is already damaged and i think won't last a full year. Now normally i wouldn't care and keep the tail as is, but i plan on volunteering a lot with my tail and while with the current damage it is possible in a few more gigs i may have too maby cracks in the tail to cover up and continue to use it so my plan is to work on a tail for a year or w to replace my current one. I will then retore the tail or uss it for certain gigs only (depending on what the damage looks like by completion)

While i am starting the thread now, the actual tail wont be started for a while. Instead i will be posting my sketches and test swatches (i also plan on making trial tails. Basically tails tlthat look like what i want it to look like but baby sized to save money on the trial and the final tail.)

My inspiration for this tail was originally this photo:

Going from there i selected these color schemes as possibilities for the tail (i want to volunteer as a merfairy so i want the tail the play up fairyness too)

Aaaaaaah, your A fluke is very similar to what I want when I eventually get mine! (Probably b/c I want mine to match my fairy wings tattoo - us silly fairies and our frills! :3 )

Thanks! I'm trying to design my fluke to look like fairy wings, I ended up sketching a combination of fluke A and fluke C (basically a wider version of A. ) But I think I like A better because I feel like the thinness will make it look a bit more whimsical rather than a wide fluke.

I'm also hoping to get my hands on some of that iridescent powder to see if I can get that amazing sparkle. My wings will be an iridescent pink (picture of one of my test wings, I think I want to change the design though and make a new pair this time with wire to make sure they hold up better)

Oh I'm there already too :) My name there is the brush fairy, I don't get on a lot though since I mostly browse the web from my phone using apps :P Once I start focusing on my faesona I'll try to become more active there though

I'm feeling a strong urge to redesign it. I want out to scream fairy but i also want it to look tropical. These are the images I've been saving that got both of these but I'm not sure how to incorporate the colors in a way i like without seeming like I'm copying these designs too much.

EDIT: tapatalk is having issues posting the photos

You could always use the current one as a dry tail. That way it isnt' a complete waste but it won't get damaged as much from wear and pool use. Since there is less motion and action on land and for shoots.

I'd advise looking at everything you think you want your tail to convey, find some inspiration pictures of each elememt (not necessarily of mermaids, you could look at real fish, butteflies/fairies, basically anything that has the kind of colors and vibes you're going for with the tail) and sitting down and sketch out a few designs with each tail implementing as many elements as possible without looking cluttered. Then maybe you can play around with the different parts of the different sketches you have made that you think you like best and settle on a final design. That's what I do for my designs because I like each of my tail designs to be almost entirely different and unique.

I also find that my mood tends to shift (sometimes entirely) from month to month or so, and that it helps to cataloge all the different designs so that eventually there will be a tail to wear when I want to be a more bright tropical fun mer, and there's one to be more majestic and dark and realistic, and there's one to represent my regular personality, and one for when I want to be my opposite. It is totally fine to completely change your tail design right before you make it, but I would recommend maybe making the redesign different enough from your previous inspiration and making sketch designs for both of those because you may want to make both of those tails in the future.

oh dang I completely forgot about this thread lol, I went completely the opposite direction with my tail huh? Maybe one day I'll come back to this and make another tail (I'm thinking tackling a painted tail one day when I have funds to spare after I repair my purple tail.)
