View Full Version : Custom Fin Fun Doesn't Fit

I just got the custom sized tail I ordered from Fin Fun, and it doesn't fit right at all. I'm reluctant to give a bad review since at least some of it is probably my fault, but the ankles are uncomfortably tight, the waist is way too loose and for some reason higher in the front, and it is nearly two inches longer than the measurement I gave them for length.

I'm also a little annoyed that the pictures on their site imply the entire tail is just two pieces of fabric when in fact the fluke is entirely separate and sewn onto the rest of the tail. I was expecting a smooth transition from scales into fluke. Correction: What I have appears to be a Zoey's Aussie Green tail with a Crystal Arctic Blue fluke sewn onto it. :O_o: I have no idea why because the only thing I recall asking about as far details go was an elastic waistband.

Anyway, I don't have the sewing skills needed to fix it, so this oddity may be going back.

We ordered a custom tail from them too, and I had to take in the side seams and cut off a few inches at the top. That's weird that they gave you the wrong fluke! It's definitely not the greenish-blue Aussie fluke. I'd see if you could get a fix or a refund, because tight ankles aren't fixable. Their customer service was great the last few times I emailed them!

I have a custom Celtic Green, and mind was super long and really loose. I'm still working on bringing it down and in. The fluke is super weird, though!

I have a custom Crystal blue. It fit OK, but due to my body shape, kept slipping down. I added a waistband, and now its fine.
The fabric of the fluke is also a separate piece with a seam, just like yours. But its all crystal blue. My fluke is the same as yours, but not the body. What they gave you is really odd.

This one has a waistband already, but because it is loose enough for me to comfortably stick both of my arms down it, I don't think it will be much help.

I realized I had made a bit of a mistake with the ankles when trying it on. They are distinctly uncomfortable when standing on solid ground with no fin, but when sitting with or without a fin they don't bother me much at all. So maybe it is salvageable after all? I will definitely get in touch with them to see what my options are, because I really do want to keep the mismatched fluke. It works amazingly well with my eventual plans for modifications.

It's fintastic that it'll work out after all! I'm sure you can take the tail to a tailor and give them your measurements (or have them measure you) so that they can take it in for you. Spandex isn't too hard to sew compared to the special occasion fabrics they usually work with!

Might I ask what you're going to do to yours? I modified mine and added a glitter dorsal, fluke spines, and a few gold scales here and there. I love it so much!

My current plan for the tail is to paint/dye most or all of the green parts to a shade of teal and possibly paint some yellow on the tips of the fluke if I can get it vivid enough. If paint doesn't work I might sew on a bit of bright yellow fabric. So it'll be a little bit like a reverse of my avatar's tail.

So I did ask Fin Fun about the tail, and they say that if it is not accurate to the measurements I gave them they'll alter it to match, but otherwise it will cost $25 to have them do the alterations. While this does seem fair, it is not what I was told when I previously asked them what my options would be if the tail didn't fit. I have an email from before I placed my order saying that if it didn't fit I could return it for a full refund, and then presumably order again.

I have re-measured the areas that are loose, and consistently the measurements of my body are larger than the tail itself in everything but the height, but even pulling it up leaves it loose at the top of the thighs. This is getting very frustrating. I am definitely considering getting up the courage to find a tailor who can help.

Also, they say the "hips" are 9-10" inches below the natural waist aka belly button, which I think might be part of the problem.

That actually sounds really cool!

I gave them my exact measurements, and I think they try to make it an exact fit instead of allowing for the stretch of the spandex, which would make it fit perfectly. Typical spandex can have up to 4 inches of stretch, which is why their size charts have a range of measurements for one size. Mine was way too big, and I had to take it in a bunch. I think I'm going to shorten it a bit, too, because it comes up over where it should! Fin Fun needs to get with it, lol!

I know this is not much help, but I think the people at FinFun may be a bit overwhelmed with the limited edition tails and all that stuff, considering Summer holidays are upon us and I bet they have a lot of work right now. I made a purchase from them more than a month ago and I am still waiting on part of it.

They sent a article that I did not purchase instead of the correct one. I contacted them, they said they would correct it and then they sent me again the whole order, with the wrong article again. I am waiting for the right article to be delivered, hopefully third time will be the charm.

Hang in there, hopefully everything will sort itself out :)

ETA: My FinFun tail also has a seam. I have noticed that the pictures int the website have changed so the tails seem to have a smooth transition, like the Magictails, and I was wondering if the printing of the tails had been changed.

Whisper, I wish I had the know how to adjust it myself, but since I was barely able to sew two pieces of fabric together in a way that stays on for my first tail, I am definitely not trying anything with one as expensive as this. And at this point I'm not certain I trust them to get it right either.

Talia, as far as I know the pictures on the site have always had that smooth transition. It was a factor in my choosing them for my first professionally made tail, so I am a little disappointed that it isn't what the actual product looks like.

Is your tail a custom size? I believe the custom made tails have to made in 2 pieces so they can more easily customise it, if you order a non customised tail it should be a smooth transition. My Artic Blue tail purchased earlier this year is certainly a smooth transition.

Nope, not a custom made, just a regular size M; but I purchased it in December of 2014. It is not as new as yours.

Mine too on the Fin Fun Ariel Green, where it is two pieces joined at the scale to fluke. I think they changed it to smooth transition like the Magictails sometime this year.
