Okay, I've spent weeks and weeks researching the amazing tuturials on this forum, pictures on Facebook, Pinterest, and anything I could find on random pages on the web. I feel like I'm ready to jump into this! Although, sadly, this will not be for me. I really want to lose some weight before I throw myself in there (currently in progress!!). BUT, I have the perfect subject, my super skinny, mermaid-loving, 7 year old daughter! I feel it'll be good practice; smaller scale, and trial and error! I think making it smaller scale (no pun intended) will make things easier.

Here's the tail design and colors she chose. :) She wants to be like mommy (my tail design will be similar).

I've also hit a snag with getting the scale sheet created. Seems there are no paper punches that are thick enough at the opening for foam. I saw Kanti's tutorial video where she had to grind it down, but I didn't really want to do that. So I found a site that sells pre-cut foam circles (http://www.craftsuppliesforless.com/foam-circles-1inch.html)! I also lucked out considering I have a Silhouette Cameo that can also cut foam! I'm going to use it to create any additional foam circles I need.

I'm going to do some sample foam sheets and find the best way of molding and casting. I have UltraCal30 I'm going to play with, with sculpts with monster clay. I also have a trail amount of Dragon Skin 10 Medium. Anyone else use UltraCal? I've read other materials like Smooth-On Liquid Plastic is best. If UltraCal is a flop, I'll have to order some. I also am not sure if rubber can be a mold for rubber casting? Cuz I have Mold Star 16 I could use...

This design looks lovely, I wish you good luck, I think you can use rubber on rubber, but there has to be some sort of sealant and release agent between the two, I feel like, I may be wrong because I've never tried it, as you said, do some tests and you'll find out

I thought about testing my Mold Star 16 with it. I have Vaseline and Ease Release 200 that I've used in the past. I just tested a patch of scales with both to see which one works better. Molding with Ultracal30. I did one half of each side of the scales. Hopefully it'll be dry in the morning with the results!

So I tested the UltraCal30 for the mold and it works great!

I will definitely have to strengthen the entire sheet once I make it with plaster bandages. I'll probably flip it over using a giant board so it won't crack when I lift it.

Also put some dragon skin in to test the mold release method, and to see how the silicone looks in general. Also, I definitely like the Ease Release better! The Vaseline left streaks and splotchy areas that were cast into the silicone (as you can see from the right side). It also attracts fuzzies like mad, so it is super dirty and hard to clean. I'll definitely be using the Ease Release for the full scale sheet. Now to test spray paints!

Also started on some pectoral fins for the front of her tail. :) Sculpted with Monster Clay.

I got my foam circles ordered! My Cameo does cut foam okay, but I think its more cost effective to order bulk. I want to create the illusion of the scales getting smaller toward the top so I'll be using the Cameo for the smaller scales. The scales in the sample was just simple circles I cut, not the final scale look (which is why they look misshapen). Excited to continue progress! :D

Okay I need some suggestions for a monofin. There's quite a few for kids, but I don't want it to be too bulky by the ankles, and I also want it to be big enough to cover more space in the fluke. Some of these have straps too, do I remove them? How comfortable are they when you swim with or without them? Here's a few I've found. I'd love some advise!
