Painted Ariel Tail

After making my Milotic tail, I decided that I really wanted to do more cosplay tails. I have a few planned out, but the first one up is Ariel!

I'm basing the look on her redesign images, with the two tone glittery tail like these:

I had found the most amazing, perfect fabric for this... which sadly was sold out, the company wasn't restocking it, and I haven't seen it again since. So, I decided to paint the darn thing.

But first, making a tail to paint!

Patterns were made, flukes were cut, and I began work on the body - including a dummy to stretch it over while I paint.

After doing a test in some scrap lycra (I knew I had to take in the pattern a little, and also give it that plunge in the front), I cut and sewed the dang thing!

Already I see a problem, which is the hip.. fin? I'm not sure what her hip thing should be called, to be perfectly honest. Flounce, maybe?
I'll try stitching it down at the base, but I may have to take it off and just do a mesh instead. Or ignore it and let it shred.. we'll see.

Anyway, the painting will begin as soon as I stop being a lazy bum (hopefully tomorrow)? I still have some tests to run on how exactly I want to layer the paint, but this will be an adventure at least~

Thanks guys! It'll be a decent number of layers by the time I'm done, but I think it'll all work.

Played with paint options. The one on the far right is scales as the bottom layer, two layers of tulip soft, then one layer of jacquard. It's my favorite for the emerald and halo, the blue I'll probably do one (or no?) layer of the soft. It'll all soft of blend together towards the bottom so it'll be an adventure.

The one problem I've always had with puffy paint is that sometimes it bubbles and smudges. BUT, since I'm covering it with other layers, I'm just smoothing the bubbles down and redoing the scale bit, so that's nice at least. Took about an hour (broken into two chunks) to get the front halfway done. Whew, this'll be a process for sure..

The scales are freehand on the fluke, up the body I'm using a template I made out of a sheet of quilting temalate plastic, with the cap of a pill bottle traced for the size lol. I'll grab a pic of it tonight ♡

I think after I finish scaling I'm going to add rays under the soft paint, just to give a little more texture to the final scale.
And I'm totally gonna have to redo my waist ruffle. Bleh.



In other news, I started playing with some silicone for the shell bra. I'm having possibly too much fun with the silicone, and am reminding myself I DON'T need a silicone tail.. (yet...)

The other shell is curing right now, and I have enough silicone left over to attach it to a bra (which I need to buy. Oops) - looks like one test kit will do a bra for me, so that's cool! I have some little shell testers that I'll probably put on some sort of backing and use as earrings? Maybe. I'm not sure yet, but I like them.

LOL, I have the same shell mold - the one with the little shells. The only thing I did with it was chocolate shells and soaps. Made a chocolate pirate treasure chest for my aunt's birthday and put some shells made with that mold for decoration. I would never thought it could be used with silicone :)

Most chocolate (and some soap, though not all) can be used for resin, so I decided to try it with silicone and hope for the best. I'm pleased it worked!

Also.. guys, after playing with silicone I may have caught the bug. The silicone bug. Send help, I'm planning a tail to motivate me to lose weight..



So there wasn't much progress yesterday, as I was making an outfit for a friend's horse for Ren Faire, but this morning I finished scaling the front, Again, any messy bits I'm smoothing, and will be covered with more paint anyway, so they shouldn't be noticeable at the end. All my projects go through a "weird looking I think I messed up" state lol

I'm also playing around with scrap on adding rays at the bottom layer of the paint to give the scales some more texture

This is looking great. If you redo the flounce you could try outlining in fabric paint, then cut down the middle of the fabric paint. So essentially you're using the fabric paint like fray check .

That's an excellent idea! I found a fabric that's very similar, but a little more dense and seems less prone to fraying. But I'm totally gonna do the fabric paint idea also!

The small ones I found at Michael's, the big one was on ebay. And I'm using Dragon skin! :)


The back is about half scaled right now. I've also been playing with different ways to paint, and I think I've struck something. Originally I was using just metallics, but now I've switched to using the metallics for the shading and highlight, and the soft paints for the base colors. I'm liking the results MUCH better.

If it was me, I would not paint the bra. The shells look like they are magically attached to your chest, LOL! I can barely see the straps. Maybe it was the light on your picture, but it looks fantastic.

So, the shells are on the top. It's not quite what I'd like (the bra conformed to the silicone rather than the other way around, so it's got less support than I'd hoped), but it might work out. Gonna get some fabric paint to touch up on the sides/inside/draw the strap around the back.
I found that problem with silicone shell tops I made before on bras. While the silicone is curing, i would sit a small bowl (or curved object that silicone won't cure to) to get the silicone shell to form a curve instead of being flat backed. I sit the bra on a appropriate size bowl and use clothes pins to hold the silicone shell on the cup and the bowl below it assists with curving the shell. Its not perfect but... I've also just used unpadded triangle swim tops for shell tops and had better luck.

Another way you can fix your flounce is by *burning*/melting all around the fabric edges including the seam side. I am using the same type of fabric for eel-like side fins on my blue zippy tail. It has worked well thus far, but I haven't put it in the water yet so... we'll see. I am going to coat the edges in glow in the dark paint.
Your tail looks great so far! And I may be following it to make an Ariel tail of my own. Keep up the good work! :)
