So, as part of my ongoing quest to bug the online population of the world until they read my stuff, I set up a blog and posted some stories:

The only problem is that I'm new to this whole thing and haven't got much experience of how to attract attention to the thing.
Can anyone offer a few hints or tips to help me out?

What you're doing now (mentioning it on forums you frequent) is a good start.

And there was me thinking that I'd been all clever and snuck that one past you...

Just call me Captain Obvious. ;)
Seriously, I know how you feel. It wouldn't bother me if I never made a dime from anything I write. But the idea of nobody reading any of it just kills me. I haven't tried a blog yet, let me know how it works out.

Just keep posting stuff, I made a blog and never once advertised it and the page views have only been going up and up reaching nearly 400 and I haven't even been posting on it regularly (like once every 3 weeks). The key is finding a way to make it appealing to people, and I hadn't even set up subscription options. Might I suggest something like Feedburner which allows people to subscribe via email so they get any new posts right away in their inbox? This is how I keep track of all the blogs I follow and makes life twenty times easier. I've found several blogs I love but if I can't subscribe I forget about them and move on.

I think that I may need to work on the visual presentation of the posts that I'm popping up there with some images as well.
Thanks for the tips, Sirena.
I'll look into the applications that you mention.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I think you may have an advantage over me in the number of people willing to look at your blog...my subject matter is not quite so photogenic!

Oh no it's not a blog about myself or anything, it's a blog dedicated entirely to other people ^_^ Well and their art. I found the easiest thing to do is just type in the name of your host site and then template and look around until you find a unique and visually appealing site template that matches what your going for.

Well, all my stories now have images posted with them that vaguely relate to the themes...free images online are a sparse thing it would seem.

Have you tried deviantarts stock section? As long as you give credit most users are fine with using them, you would want to double check their specific rules for use though.

I should do that...maybe some of them won't mind being associated with me!

I found that Deviant Art has a lot of artists that are willing to do commissions for a very reasonable amount or even free. Take a look at the commissions done for my stories http://alveric2.deviantart.com/gallery/ .
