On Leaving MN + WAKEUP CALL

I’ve been debating this back and forth for a while if I should leave MN.

I know a lot of us mers are really tired of the drama in and outside of MN, but it’s gotten to a point where the online drama is leaking into facebook and the outside world as well and quite frankly… I’m getting pretty fucking sick of it.

Starting from the lack of representation of coloured mers in the community, to cultural appropriation from other mers, to non-coloured mers crying white tears and making it all about them crying “wah wah what about me and MY rights” and completely forgetting that coloured mers LACK those rights, to mers crying about how they’re entitled to free things, to certain mers sticking their nose into other people’s businesses when it’s not theirs and bullying mers (online and offline) who continually stand up for the community even though they don’t benefit, to mers who take sides when they don’t know the whole story, to lurking mers coming out of the depths of the abyss JUST to see the drama and add proverbial fuel to the fire, to mers having to contact lawyers (oh ho ho that was the fucking icing on the cake).

Seriously. I am fucking sick of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love how when someone outside our already small community bashes on us just for donning a tail and swimming in public and we all rally together to protect each other despite differences of opinions and even mutual dislike for each other, but when people inside the community brings up an issue that should be discussed in order to eradicate that issue, the complete opposite happens and those people who WOULD stand up for our rights CHOOSE NOT TO. On top of everything, certain mers, who don’t want to participate in drama but constantly preaching love and unity, are the ones causing drama and MAKING people take sides because they dislike certain mers. What the fuck is up with that?
EVERYONE NEEDS TO TAKE A HUGE FUCKING STEP BACK AND TAKE A LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE.

1) THE CONTINUAL DISRESPECT FOR EACH OTHER IN THIS COMMUNITY IS NOT OK.

You can disagree with a mer and their opinions, you are entitled to your opinion. That’s fine.
If you don’t like a mer, that is fine because not everyone is going to be your cup of tea. That goes, and will go, both ways.
Forcing members to pick sides because you hate a mer is not ok. Spreading lies and rumours about other mers is not ok.

2) IF YOU WANT LOVE AND UNITY, ACTUALLY HELP AND TRY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM SO THAT IT CAN EXIST.

Calling each other out on BS and why they are being unfair is ironically what will help the community evolve. That is NOT bullying. It’s you being defensive.
For example, without calling anyone any names, I’m calling everyone out right now to take good damn look at themselves. See how you can improve and see how you can help other mers despite differences for the greater good of the community.

3) IT IS OK TO FEEL ANGRY! But do not use it to be defensive and make it about you. Your personal experiences do not change the existing issues other mers face.

It’s becoming inherently obvious that this community is going to shits when mers don’t want to listen to other mers with problems. Why can we can easily share our personal problems in the bitch it out thread and provide emotional support, but we can’t share a problem mass amounts of mer face without being told our problem doesn’t exist or that their problems are worse? FUCKING BULLSHIT.


I’m tired of it. Everyone is tired. The lawyers are probably also tired.
Thus, after this lovely long rant, I am happy to announce that I will be leaving Mernetwork. I have made many friends here, and I have enjoyed expressing myself and sharing my mermaid journey with everyone. However, the recent drama leaking into my facebook feed is leaving a distasteful feeling in my gut, and great displeasure in my soul. Therefore, I refuse to engage in this foolishness any longer and will be participating in the Mass Mernetwork Migration.
Furthermore, I will be cleaning out my personal facebook friend’s list so that it’s only just a close few, but if you wish to keep track of my mermaiding journey, you can follow my facebook page. I gratefully thank the mers who stood by me when I needed support, and I will continue to return the favour and support you outside of MN should the need arise.

My heart goes out to you and the other mers of color here. We're all united by a common love, so why should we separate ourselves? I think it's incredible that we have such diversity and so many different experiences in our community.

I just joined here last week and starting out my journey and I'm really saddened that there is a lot of drama and falling out. I completely understand your want to get away from it all, though. I wish you the best and I do hope this community strengthens itself rather than fight against each other because I need merfriends damnit! No one understands me! Lol serious note... I don't understand why people would feel the need to bring anything so subjective up and then fight with others about it. You're all here for one reason, mermaiding. I come and go on here bc Im so busy mermaiding, practicing, and caring for my family, there's just not enough time to read everything on here. What in the world did I miss? Actually don't tell me. I agree we shouldn't have drama but for whatever reason (I have my theories) people in this community can be so down right nasty online. In person the bullies literally hide from those they taunt online which is oddly funny to me. I hope you continue mermaiding. I'm dismayed to hear that more people are being bullied and more lawyers are being contacted. This is serious bullying yall. The lawyers aren't tired, they're making that money! I've been through 7 just this summer alone and it's expensive (non mermaid related). It's hard to know the full story as you need to get everyone's perspective that's involved and that's hard work! Even screen shots can be fabricated. People can be so deceitful, I don't know how they find the time? I've got some extreme haters in the mermaid world, people who stalk my personal FB even though they are blocked, but I feel like 98% of yall are cool and it's been worth sticking around as I have since the mer yuku days. I really like mer people. It's nice to wear tails with others and not be the weird one. I hope we can all come together bc we do need the support. I wish people could just say "I disagree" and move on. For example, if you don't like my review, move on, if you don't agree with my life perspective, move on, if you don't like that I got this gig and you didn't, move on. Does it suck when your hometown hires an outsider to do a gig you could do just as well if not better and support your community through your taxes? Yes! But don't hate on the performer, they want to work like the rest of us.People can creep into your personal life if they have some vendetta against you, and it can be unsettling, but I'm a big girl so unless it hurts my work (like people sending emails to my clients to try to defame me which is highly illegal!) I ignore them, no matter how hurtful they can be. At the end of the day when my tail comes off Im an avid kickboxer and am a legal gun carrier so in person threats against me or my baby are taken 100% seriously and met with the appropriate amount of force. Online threats to me are just met with an eye roll and some amusement. If it makes you feel better I haven't seen anyone come through on their threats of bodily harm in the mermaid world. I hope that those of us who want peace can continue to grow together and we can ignore the bad apples. It's been my experience that if you leave the negative souls alone and together that they turn on their own. I've just made amends with one of my haters and it felt great! I wish more of us could meet up and hug it out. I'm not even sure who you are SeaGlass but I hope that you do well ��❤️�� Maybe we will all work it out, maybe not, but I do want my daughter to have a good supportive and friendly community to belong to. Yes, there are lots of theories, including the ones we tell ourselves so that we can sleep at night. Theories about people who are pretending to be our friends but have actually dragged our names through the mud countless times, threatened us and tried to outright ruin us. I too look at Facebook amused at all of the people who don't understand the difference between opinions, libel, defamation, etc. Since I have studied media law for years and teach it at a state university, I have a good laugh at all the "lawyers" who are gladly taking money and laughing at what results in little more than "mermaid drama"...and oh must that make for some funny discussions at the attorney water cooler. I know my own attorney certainly got a kick out of it. And wow....people are threatening bodily harm in the mer-world? I mean I saw someone but some little knife emoticons in a comment once, but that was actually directed at Raina. So I assume that person wanted to stab Raina? I don't know....who cares...I have more work than most of the mers combined that sit around plotting and scheming so I just keep swimming and ignore the haters who have insecurity issues and need to not-so-humblebrag at every turn to prove their worth. Both of my children have mermaid tails but there is no way in hell I would ever involve them in this community or any other adult hobby community. While I am a mother I have no need to remind people constantly of that fact as it doesn't really relate to 99% of discussions dealing with mermaids. But I'll pray for those souls that have evil lurking literally in their backyard, but choose to pretend that others are the real boogeyman. #blessyourhearts

^ This. lol I actually ran surveys of every professional mermaid business I could find (for my book) and out of all the strictly mer ones (not including tail makers) I was surprised to see I work more, and earn more than most. By a long shot. I love the suggestion that we must have time on our hands because we make time to get involved in important issues such as race, or outright lying/extortion. Actually I happen to be a kickass ENFP who does a million things at once all the time. I also don't feel the need to remind people of my achievements constantly, or the things that DO take up my time. But hey, Published 3 books in 3 years (thanks to the support of awesome people) taught myself to walk again during my early mermaid journey, have appeared on all major media outlets in Canada and many major media outlets in the states, did the first published study on mermaid tails, run a weekly and mobile mermaid school, work 3-5 gigs every week in addition to working a contract job where I train pilots how to fly planes 40+ hours a week, manage a team of 9, cope with 3 chronic illnesses and go to treatment for them weekly, personal training 3 times a week, free diving training 1 time a week, somehow find time to keep creating resources for the community, vollunteer frequently, been in multiple music videos, book covers, in books, and licensing agreements for my image use, frequently teach myself new skills and software so I can be more independent, and most frequently recovering from a concussion (hence my terrible typing) and yet somehow I do decide to make time to talk about IMPORTANT ISSUES. Some things are just important. Doesn't mean we're all sitting here on facebook waiting for the drama snowball to start rolling.

The assumptions made about people are rediclous, and it's always the same people trying to pin others against each other so they can watch the chaos. Theyre reading this all right now, thinking it's funny as shit.

But whatever. I don't mind being someone's entertainment if it means standing up for people like Seaglass or Raven, and doing what's right. it might cause me some stress, but hey, I can sleep at night knowing I stayed true to myself and didn't simply flip my face around different groups of people, or stick my head in the sane and pretend there's no problem.

In this community, holding people accountable for terrible actions = bullying. The people who do the actual bullying, want to deflect from it as much as possible, so they scream the loudest and come up with any distracting plot they can to make people look anywhere else but at them. I may have my faults, but I'm also accountable, and back everything I say/do up with actual facts. It's why my lawyer laughs at people who try to cause me shit. Cuz I learned early on to never say a thing I can't prove if it ever went to court. They brag about their lawyers, fresh out of law school, but don't tell you how my award winner top in the country ate theirs for lunch. Cuz I don't just call up the closest lawyer when some shit goes down and ask em to send a letter, I keep an amazing one on retainer 24/7 for my entire business an actual BUSINESS lawyer actually trained and skilled in these areas and not someone just sending off a letter they can't even hope to back up for the sake of taking someone else's money. You never hear that side of things. I can't reccomemnd enough how every professional should have a REAL lawyer. Sure makes anything liability wise (like the swim school) a lot easier.

Bonnie would be surprised to know that despite all the butting heads Venessa and I do with her, that we spent a whole year trying to wrangle someone back from ruining her life. I may call her out on things I disagree with like in the race thread, but I don't fantasize about ruining her life like some people we've experienced. I don't hate anyone enough to let them consume me like that, to plan and manipulate. But I will tell you Bonnie, people send me your screen shots all the time. I ignore them for the most part, but you certainly have a LOT of people on your friends list who get a kick out of trying to pin us all against each other and watch the result.
