Adding Finnage to my Magictail

I love making fabric tails for myself and my family, but I fell in love with Magictail of Germany's Venus tail. After a couple swims I decided it needed more bling, AKA finnage. This is a thread about how I went about adding said finnage and my thoughts and experiments along the way. My first idea was to add ankle fins to camouflage the heels bumps. I was hoping to add some somewhat translucent ankle fins. I so set about testing various ways to color vinyl that would be waterproof and somewhat scratch resistant. I tried dyes and a variety of different pigments and markers, applying heat etc.
My husband was very understanding about all the experiments taking over our bathroom counter for days on end. Unfortunately although some of my results were very pretty, none passed the waterproof and scratch resistant test. My next thought was painting sheer fabric which is what I will talk about next.

To make the fins, I cut out my fin shapes from clear shelf liner,and encased it in sheer fabric. After painting the fins with acrylic paint I sewed them on my spandex magictail. My final conclusion, while I love how they look in photos while swimming and on dry land, they added a LOT of drag on my already slow magictail. It is very cumbersome to swim in this tail because of all the drag and difficult to swim forward and look graceful. I would not use this technique again on any tail I planned to actually swim in. I am very happy with still photographs underwater and on land however.

Cool! Will you be posting photos? It sounds like a tail for small pools/shallow water/photoshoots. Hydrodynamics can be tricky.

This was the only tail I had swam in so I thought that my difficulties stemmed from my swimming technique. I spent a lot of time watching competition swimming and belly dancing videos to improve my undulations in addition to practicing in the pool a half hour a day four times a week.

After reading many many posts comparing monofins and seeing comments about magictails being slow, I started to think part of the problem might be the magictail monofin. I just compared my new mahina monofin with the magictail monofin (with the fabric fluke attached but not the spandex tail with added fins). I found I could swim twice as far on one breath of air with the mahina.

I found using fabric paint on the edges stops the fabric from fraying. Also I heat set the paint by leaving it in a hot car for several hours. It still looks good after multiple swims.

After some underwater photos I saw the ankle fins were too floppy to conceal the heal bump like I had hoped. So I moved those fins to my hips and started experimenting again. Reusing and recycling are important to me so I was happy to find an translucent plastic binder in my crafting stash.

Would fabric paint do the job?

I think fabric paint would work if you are only painting small areas. Any kind of paint will make the spandex stiff and not stretchy anymore. If you do paint it, be sure it is fully stretched out and stuffed with plastic bags, pool noodles, plastic table cloth, or something similar. Instead of paint you could try fabric dye. Are you familiar with wax resist technique? https://www.ritstudio.com/techniques/creative-techniques/wax-less-batik/ I would experiment with some spandex stretched in an embroidery hoop. Draw your outlines with Elmer’s School Glue Gel (blue) let dry, then paint in your designs with Rit dye. Paint will be more opaque. Dye will be transparent and you will be able to see some details and the results will be influenced by the base color.

If you ever feel like adding more types of fins, I make mine out of chiffon and burn the edges (to hem the fins). That way, they move really wonderfully in the water and if you have a set of good fabric markers or fabric spray paint and a brush (I use Tulip brand), you can colour them and they won't be too overpowering. The only downside that I've found to this strategy is that the colours of the chiffon all turn out to look around the same colour whilst on the tail or in the water, so painting/colouring them is necessary unless you prefer paler fins. Hope this helps, your tail looks amazing!! I might have to try that idea, and possibly look at the company from which you bought the tail, it looks gorgeous with your fins.

Yes, chiffon is very lightweight and should reduce drag by a lot compared to the heavier materials you are using.

Chiffon will cause less drag. Organza is also a good option.

Ohh yes and organza is much stiffer than chiffon as well. Tulle may work, depending on the look of fins you want, or georgette, although that may not hold up underwater.

I'm currently painting my Delfina tail with textile paint. I hope it will work in the water and the clorine won't 'bite' all the paint off. :confused:

What brand of paint are you using? I hope you will share your results here with us. I tested my spandex skin with the fins with my mahina monofin and there was hardly any drag. So now I want to retrofit my magictail so I can wear it with the mahina. I think the best way would be to make a painted spandex fluke cover and sew it to the magictail.

it's mostly the purple that is coming off.

I did not scrape my fluke on the bottom of the pool.
