Hey merfriends!

Following some generous donations from my amazing finfriends (http://www.gofundme.com/mermaidwhisper) I was able to buy some Lumiere paints from JoAnn Fabrics with their free shipping deal, which is happening today!

I ordered Metallic Gold, Sunset Gold, and Metallic Copper because I am making an h2o tail! I have loved h2o since it was released 10 years ago. I watched it with my guinea pigs and got the whole street loving it! I downloaded the music and sing it all the time.

Surprisingly, I'm not a huge fan of Mako Mermaids! I feel like they took all the good bits and struggles from h2o and tried to make them cooler.

There is a neoprene seller on Etsy that I will be buying from. She sells gold 1.5mm neoprene. I don't want something that's too buoyant! My monofin will be a FINIS Foil.

It's been an amazing week. I'm going swimming in the morning, so I've got to sleep soon.

BUT I am having an existential mermaid crisis here.

What color neoprene should I use? I was thinking of doing a close replica of the h2o tails, but now, I feel like mine should be a little more unique.

I already have gold, sunset gold, and copper Lumiere paints. I love blue, purple, and green, as well as the moon.

Any ideas? *panics*

My tail is probably the least original concept ever, just a stereotypical cliched tail that you would get from every five year old if you asked them to draw a mermaid
actualy probably not, 5year olds are super creative, lol
but- I kind of love it. It was just what I imagined in my head that I would look like if I were a mermaid. Splash was a little before my time, h20 (and even Ariel) was a little after the influences that kind of shaped 'mermaid' in my mind, so it was literature and art. If you are inspired by h20 you could always use those colors but your own style! As if you are related but they are your distant cousins. lol. if you've always dreamed of yourself in those colors, go for it:) if you are wanting to come up with something completely different, dream it to be:)

I know nothing about neoprene tails (though I want to!!!!!!) and am totally the wrong person to chime in about planning, because I planned nothing:/ my tail just sort of...transpired.
But I would stalk some threads to make sure of how the gold and orange will look painted over the turquoise- are you mixing the pigment in the silicone? Will the turquoise be in any way a visible underlayer? Is there a way that you could order a few samples and try things?
but....I love, love lovelovelove turquoise and gold.

The scales will be stamped on individually with space in between each one. It'll be gold and sunset gold scales, then sunset gold to blend into the fluke, then copper for the spines and the very end of the fin, like the h2o tails:

The turquoise won't be a huge part of it, but I figure it would look pretty as a background for the orangey colors!

Definitely excited you are only painting and no silicone. That will be less stressful!!! And easy to get on and predictable in how it works out- perfect, perfect.
I do still think...since paint, even opaque paint, looks different on one background than another, if you are unsure you might still want to test? Just to be sure it's what you love, before you buy all that neoprene?
(OMG please alert Pearlie Mae that I think her advice just became fully integrated into my thinking???)
Though, as Aeliana reminded us of Bob, surprises are happy accidents, lol

Well, the Lumiere Goddess Little Orca frequently paints neoprene with Lumiere paints, and they always turn out beautiful! Since neoprene is closed-cell, the paint shouldn't seep through and change colors like it did on my spandex tail, though I still do love the transformation!

I'm sure that anything that happens will just mean that I end up with glitter instead of a paint color, and I'm totally okay with that! Bring on the sparkles!

I'm still torn between making as close a replica as possible (my dream) or being unique (for others' sake).

I just found out that the neoprene I was looking at on Etsy is actually scuba knit *sheds single tear*

Off to foamorder I go. Say, does anyone know if I could get away with just one sheet? It's 51" by 83", my length is 39" with a 21" fluke, and my hip/tum area is 50".

It's $80 for a sheet (with shipping included!) and I don't have the funds as of late. But you're welcome to drop in any time to ask how the project is going or leave a dollar or two! [emoji170][emoji170]

Random but tonight I watched an episode of h20 with my daughter and just now I realized how incredibly excited little girls will be to see your tail- their dream come true- swimming with an h20 mermaid!!

Are you deadset on neoprene? You could use scuba knit too, it is cheaper than neoprene and more durable than spandex. I believe Mermaid Caspiana used it for her sequin tail and I've seen a few painted ones around here too. I'm thinking of using it for my future sequin tail.

You're right, though; scuba knit would cost me $50 or so whereas the neoprene would cost $78.

The monofin came in today! So happy!

The fin size is a bit bigger than my Fin Fun, and thicker and stiffer, so it should give at least a little better propulsion! I'm already in love with the Fin Fun monofin, so this one's got to be awesome!

My Lumiere paints shipped today! They should be here in three business days or so.

I have updated my GoFundMe page: after getting such great deals on my monofin, paint, and fabric, I dropped it from $230 to $160!

It's always a good time for an existential crisis!

I've seen so many unique and beautiful neoprene tails, particularly those of Little Orca, whose adventures I have been following since I began my mermaid journey.

I love, love, love the h2o tails. They were the first mermaids I saw, and the first ones I aspired to be.

HOWEVER, I am a very creative and unique person, and I would love for my tail to have the same flair that I do! Is there a way that I can incorporate the h2o tails into my design while still having a different tail?

I'm really thinking about this blue and orange idea [emoji848][emoji57] purple and copper or black and copper would scream Halloween, wouldn't it?

I want that mystery and magick that comes with mermaiding as well as that siren aspect. I love dark tails as they're so easy to see underwater, and I'll be doing the majority of my swimming in a public pool!

You know what I just realized?

I can have it both ways.

I can make an h2o tail now, since that was my original plan, and just get scuba knit for a different tailskin later on, since I have the monofin and I'm pretty good at sewing. The paint for the whole thing was only $20, and the fabric would be anywhere from $50-$80, so it's really not that much for a whole new tail later on!

My Lumiere paint came in today, and I am in LOVE!

I love every Lumiere I get. They're all so gorgeous. You should see their halo paints :swoon:

That pattern was my original choice, but someone else recommended the diamond scales. I tried using those, and it was awful, like, yeesh. Back to the original plan!

My manager called me in for a 5.5 hour shift yesterday. It doesn't sound like much, but that's an extra $40 or so that I can use for neoprene!

Rest assured, I still have big hopes and dreams in regards to this project. I took all the measurements of my pattern today and worked out how big of a piece of neoprene I would need, which appears to be 47" by 72" at the least. Math is fun.

A different sister than yesterday's news just flew out to Florida today to go to rehab for 38 days. She's going to miss her birthday and possibly the birth of my younger sister's child (she's 17). I also found out that it was her plan to die of overdose(which had me bawling at 2am) as the syringe sister (20) told her to do just that. They had been doing drugs together. Now they're out to kill each other or themselves, whichever comes first.

I just found out that the person who is giving me a room is a single male. I make very good friends with guys as I'm very casual, and he asked me if I would be okay with the situation. I don't think he has any ill intentions. I hope.

Mission h2o is a go-go. Just a bit of a slow-go while I try to raise the last $90. I have $3 in my bank account. Every penny I get on Friday has to go towards a car *sigh*.

I did a sneaky thing.

Since my dad tells me I only have to save half of my paycheck and I always save almost every bit of it, I took out $20 andddddd...

I bought two yards of gold scuba knit and a bottle of Fray Check >:)

The fundraiser is deleted and so is my account because it showed my name and location, and with all the horror going on, I thought it best for people not to be able to call the police on me (again) for something I didn't do (for a 5th time).

Also, today is my four-year anniversary on MerNetwork! I love all my merfriends, even the ones I've had disagreements with in the last few days. I have been having a horrible time, and it is creeping into every aspect of my life. I'm sorry if I've hurt anyone.

I painted a sports bra (because 38H, that's why) with my Lumieres and it's hotttttt. I love it. Pictures? Pictures.

Would you believe me if I told you I actually like silver better? Probably not after two gold-enhanced tails. But I'm a Leo.

So two yards of this polyester/Lycra nonsense was $10. I'm cheap. It's 60" wide and two yards is 72". I needed a 45" width and 70" length at the most, so this is perfect! I figured I could squeeze in a dorsal and fluke fringe and fray check it, as I have that extra 15"x72" piece and fins aren't that wide.

Oh, and it's machine washable *score*. It's classified under activewear fabric, which is where they put all their swim stuff, too.

My manager texted me and asked me to come in today. 6 hours in the fitting room is BS, but I can have a drink and everyone loves me back there. Plus, it's an extra $50. Also, the strictest, oldest manager there wants to give me a promotion. Ta-daaaaa! This is my third month there.

Ah, thank you! Three out of four managers absolutely adore me. The last one hates everyone! :lol:

Part-time employees (moi) are only allowed to have up to 25 hours a week. My manager wants to move me to the stockroom (I worked stock at JCP) and give me about 30 hours instead of my usual 20. I already get way more hours than anyone else on the schedule. Every time I look, people have 5-13 hours, and I've always got at least 16. They like me! :D I love recovery, and that's a lot of what I do. I recovered four departments and put back two racks of clothes in two hours! *laughs maniacally*

My fabric hasn't come in yet [emoji53] it'll take a little while. It's this gorgeous mustard gold scuba knit. I ordered from that site a few years ago when I first started sewing, and I loved it!

Time for magic making!

I've decided to make two tails out of this in different colors. Especially because...

Walmart had scuba knit for $5 a yard in one of the colors I love!

Sewing is done, and she fits perfectly on the first try!

I decided to close the fluke since my monofin is flexible enough to be folded and spring back (it's the FINIS Foil) and I already tested putting it through at the ankles. It worked fantastically.

Everything is going swimmingly.

Time for painting!

As of 2:30AM, she is done! Mystery Magick, we'll say.

From cutting to sewing to painting in 5 hours; not bad! The scales ended up being free handed, as my stencils were thin and stupid.

Still trying to figure out how to secure the monofin inside the fluke! The shifting makes it so that the seam is way over on either side front and center, so I think I'll just throw a few stitches where the monofin sits and really lock it in. Since it's wider at the bottom (of course) there will be no issues with sliding it out and back in.

Thank you [emoji170] and a wonderful merfriend you are! I'm really happy with the tail. I wanted a magical one that was less about accuracy and more of myself, and that's stark contrast and LOTS of shimmer!

Gold fabric has arrived and is already cut! I will be using the same pattern as I did for the blue tail. I'm a big fan of that fluke shape [emoji5]

I also bought fray check and will be adding tattered fabric to the edge of the fluke, and possibly putting in a tattered dorsal (still undecided).

From 1 to 3 tails in about two weeks...I'll take it!

So very sorry, dear merfriend! Life got in the way, and I visited a homeless shelter tonight, but was told they were full, so here I am!

I haven't swam in either of the new tails as I haven't gone swimming since early August!

I adore the fringe on this one. It is made out of all-weather PVC fabric that is both hard-wearing and wonderfully flowy.

The paint is certainly not my favorite, and is an ill-attempted work-in-progress. I made a belt of sorts out of the fish net, as it was not cooperating with my scale idea!

I have laid mermaiding aside for now, as things here are so crazy, and my stepfather hates it so much.

They are actually rolled up in a drawer, my tails. He told me, "I hope you have fun with that stupid mermaid bullshit in the homeless shelter." Things are not going particularly well.

I have also been told that I am faking this for attention and starting drama, adding negativity, and so on, so I have not been on MerNetwork in over a week except to clear notifications.

I am focusing more on my spirituality and my Craft right now. Magick and my coven. The goods.

There is just too much hurting in the mer community right now. A lot of my groundbreakers left, good people became bad, so much change...

I love all my merfriends so very much. I just need to find my purpose in life and rekindle the passion for dreams that brought me here four years ago.
