View Full Version : Belly Dancing Scarves for Swimming?

Hello everyone!
I have a quick question, has anyone swam in a coin belly dancing scarf before?
I just purchased my first fabric tail and I was looking for a way to glitz it up and thought about belly chains and head chains, but then I thought about coin belly scarves! You could wear the scarf over your bottoms until you get to the pool/ocean and then slide on your tail underneath it. I thought it would create a beautiful pirate mermaid look but I was wondering if anyone has tried swimming in it before.

I actually just thought about this sort of thing the other day but haven't tried it. I don't see why it would be any issue. Obviously they won't make any noise in the water and probably not much on your way out of the pool but would cirtainly be purdy.

Hmm that is an interesting idea. I actually have a few hip scarves from when I danced. I'll have to find my coin one and give it a try. Only thing I'd be worries about might be what the pool water would do to the coins...

Yeah that's my biggest concern too. 😐

Might buy a cheap hip scarf belt from local new age store and try it ^.^ That way I don't risk damaging one of my good ones

I use these all the time! Just make sure to rinse and dry them off so the coins don't get rusty.

Oh great!!! I'm glad someone uses them too! I will definitely remember to rinse them off and instead of hang drying, I'll use a blow dryer (on a low setting of course) to get it good and dry so the coins don't sit wet for too long.

I did use them too, but was too afraid that I would cut myself or my tails (while flopping around on land or when coming on land between swims to say hello to people). The coins I had were very thin.

That is something I'll have to look out for. Now I'll be extra cautious. Thank you!

Actually happen to have a video of me and Riia swimming with those scarves if you wanna check it out :)

I think they worked great, I actually removed the coins but I regret that, nowadays it's quite useless since it just flows around and doesn't work as a coverage it used to, so I can't use it anymore.

Instead of a scarf with coins, why not use a scarf with beads? There are tons of them, most are beautiful and you won't have any of the cons: no cuts on yourself or tails, no rustiness, no losing anything. And they tend to glitter a lot under the sun!

What do you guys like better???

Yeah that's my biggest concern too. 😐
I was told once to cover the coins in clear fingernail polish. It's supposed to keep them from rusting and all.

This may have already been said but I only wear coin belts for dry work. I've found that they rust terribly after being in a pool (and the pool owners dont appreciate them all over the place. But also I am very mindful of what I am wearing and how it could affect the ocean (I do lots of ocean and aquarium work). I don't wear glitter or beaded or coin belts because of what effect they could have on the ocean or if swallowed. Much like the microbead issue. I do a couple of betls where there was net holding on the coins and beads. I took all the beads and coins off and now it has this perfect tattered net look to it which looks so authentic and I love. I do so much wet work now that i never get to wear my nice bellydance belts dammit! But I do really like my deconstructed one.
