Hi everyone
I am a writer researching a book about the mermaid in contemporary culture - including the growing mer-community. I want to interview real mermaids and mermen about their lives and inspirations. I am especially interested in the enduring influence of the films Splash and Disney's Little Mermaid on this community. I watched Splash when I was little and completely fell in love with Daryl Hannah as the mermaid, Madison. If you would be interested in discussing you life as a mermaid/men with me, please get in touch.
Thank you, Megan.
PS I live in NZ and will be conducting interviews via skype to begin with...:)

Yep, I was gonna suggest Raina too! I seriously doubt I'd be of much use since I'm not a professional mer, I just live the "mermaid" lifestyle in my own unique way through mermaid photo shoots and mermaid meditation(I can't actually swim)

Thank you! I will def. check out and read! However I don't want to be a mermaid - I want to interview people who are mermaids and mermen. I am interested in the real life stories behind real mermaids.

Yes I understand. For my third book I conducted loads of surveys in the mermaid community on all the things you are discussing. And everytihng you've mentioned here is covered pretty heavily, including interviews with the people who made splash, and the role it plays in the community :)
Doreen Virtue's book also takes a look at may of the aspects you're discussing. And my second book is literally an entire year in my life as a full time mermaid and touches on all the things youre talking about.
Now that i think of it you might also enjoy my blog because it looks a lot of these things too! www.rainamermaid.weebly.com :)
Good luck

Also, Robert Short is on facebook and he is ALWAY up for talking about the role Splash has had on the mermaid community. Robert is the SPFX person who made the tail, and he appears at mermaid conventions and is very heavily involved in the community. If you like I can introduce him to you via FB I am sure he'd be more than happy to give you an interview. He also has his own archive of photos that I'm sure if you wanted to include any in your book he'd let you.
Arthur Drooker is probably another person you may want to talk with. He wrote a book about the mermaid conventions and he has a lot of good connections alog with insight into the community. He's also on facebook

Thank you. I am reading your second book now and will move on to the third afterwards. I know a bit about Splash and its making already - but have never made a tail myself of course. I have also looked at your blog and it is full of great things. Do you mean Doreen's Mermaids 101? I will look at this too, thank you for your suggestions.

Yes, I would love that, thank you. I am at a research phase and I have not read the Arthur Drooker book. I will look for this. Would def. like to talk to Robert Short. Thank you for your help. I am enjoying your book (mermaids don't have knees...!)

Are you only interested in hearing from professional mers or are you wanting to hear from recreational mers as well? I know a Merman who was inspired by the movie Splash and it helped him overcome his fear of swimming (after being nearly drowned as a kid).

Hi, I have not thought all possibilities through. I think initially professional mers have been of most interest as there is a significant commitment investment in "living" as a mermaid, however some of this could also be experienced recreationally. Your friend's story sounds interesting. I'd be happy to talk to him if he wanted to discuss this with me. Thank you!

Thanks! Def keen to talk to you. Very impressed with your work and business. I am just collating more info/research at the moment and I understand that many professional mers are busy and can work around that. I liked your page on Facebook, but could you send me link again so I can try and friend? Last time it was broken or I did something wrong...many thanks! Megan:)
