Hello everyone,
This is my first time making a silicon tail. My goal is to make it as realistic as possible. Here I will post updates to the process, which will be a bit slow due the the fact that I am in high school. Also because this is my first time with silicon, I will probably ask many questions on how to do something.

Any way my first thought was to go extended but I don't want to loose power because I won't be able to make another one for a little while. So with that in mind I need to find a way to deal with the heals. Because H20 is my favorite show and has the best tail(in my opinion) I want to make make mine h20 inspired. The only problem with that is that I am pale and orange washed me out way to much. So maybe down the road I will make a replica but for now I am working with a blue tail. On the realism factor I choses to make it individually scaled and i will be going with a fiber glass mono fin. That's all I have now but I am working on stuff today on the design. Wish me luck.

These are the two designs I came up with. (These tails are small models with out my scales)Any suggestions?

I really love the blue and gold color scale, I feel you on the time restraint, I'm in high school also and getting work done on the tail is nearly impossible D:

Thanks! That's the one I'm leaning towards. I love your tail so much and wanted to know what plastic your using? I'm trying to figure out if I should make silicon scales or plastic ones attached to a silicon body. ( like the one in the h20 tail making video)

I'm just using plastic cups from the restaurant I work at I posted a picture on my thread, it's probably a LOT easier to use silicone scales, trust me on that, I haven't tried it but cutting out each individual scale from plastic is a pain the butt..it hurts and it's time consuming, the end result is pretty satisfying though...it's up to you really [emoji14] and thanks by the way I appreciate that !

Hmmm I see. I think I have to do some tests cause sometime the end result out ways the struggle of putting it together. I am wondering though if the plastic would cut into the silicon? [emoji848]

Well no it wouldn't, the only problem with placing plastic scales on top of silicone is the gluing process, it seems that no one besides jmbfx studios has figured out a way to attach plastic onto silicone...I tried doing some tests and sil poxy did the job but I just felt that it wasn't durable enough, I hope you do some tests and maybe figure out how to do this, that'd be wonderful! And no j do not think cutting would be an issue. Not unless you're planning on coating the plastic scales with silicone, then it might become a problem

Depending on how u arrange the scales the should not puncture the silicone the only way would be if you did a layer of silicone on top of the plastic scales the movement would cause the plastic to cut through.
And I feel you on that struggle is worth it in the end i work all day and somehow find time to sculpt some nights and I have lots to do before Im done.
Good luck on your tail making jurney!

Thanks and good luck to you too! I can't wait to see the rest of your tail making journey. I have this problem of being In love with the h20 tails and i have seen the how They made the h20 tails video way too much. After they add the plastic scales the next tail that they show is more smoothed out and the scales blend better. I am trying to figure out what that step is. Any ideas? So far I have come up with a layer paint or just a layer of clear silicon.

I believe I'll be finished with the tail by summer of 2017.
And about the H2O tails he basically said it after that it gets another layer of scales and a final painting.

I don't want to sound rude but how do you know that(about the h20 tails)?

Also I hope you meet your goal! I hope to be done by then too!

Yes I know that because before I even considered making an Extended Tail I saw that vid like 1K times...
Thanks Trident True! :highfive:

Thanks for the link! [emoji1] that's the one that I saw like a billion times but I don't think paint would seal it in like that. I am going to do some tests.
So far I am working on the scales. I am leaning towards the plastic ones other than the fact that I am not sure how strong they are. I really want a durable tail cause I won't be able to make another one for a long time.
I was looking at the silicon website and they have a silicon paint which I was thinking it could seal it and give it a great paint job. That's it for. I hope to get more design stuff done today.
