Hi merpeople :)
In the (hopefully near) future I want to order a silicone tail at Finfolk.
Something I find hard to decide is whether to go for the competitor monofin upgrade. What are the pros and cons of a competitor monofin? Can you guys please correct/complement this list:
Pros:
· Faster swimming
· High quality
Cons:
· Harder to do tricks such as flips/turns?
· Fluke is less floppy/flowy
I really like floppy/flowy flukes, but I love love love swimming fast. I will use my tail in open water.
Thanks! :D

From what I've heard most people who've tried both actually like the Trainer better. The trainer is still plenty powerful, but it's much more agile in the finfolk tail compared to the competitor, makes it a lot easier to do tricks, maneuver smaller spaces. It also makes it easier to transport because it's more 'luggage' shaped, being rectangular rather than semi-circle and, from what I've heard, the Competitor has a higher chance of breaking in Finfolk tails (not saying it's likely to happen just that out of the two it's the more likely)

^That's helpful! Thanks! :)
Is it possible (after like A LOT of practice) to breach out of the water with a Trainer monofin? Or is that only possible with a competitor (still with A LOT of practice, of course)?

You can actually learn to breach out of the water (modestly) with no monofin, but it's TONS of work. So yeah, totally possible, but it depends on how much practice and strength you're working with. It won't be as dramatic as what you can accomplish with a bigger fin though.

cant usually fit a competitor monofin in any standard luggage.
They can also snap if too much force is applied to the monofin such as is you were to stand in it, have someone put something on it, or accidentally bend it.
You can still do flips and twirls etc the motion needed for it just requires a bit more strength and space (we actually tested that in our study) and they can be floppy just not as floppy if you had a foil.
I have tried all the finis monofins in tails now. My fav is still the competitor in terms of swimming. If I get another tail I would have it cut down slightly to fit in luggage, but still go with it.
I also find the foot pockets way more comfortable than a foil

@the nerdmaid: I can already breach waist-high with my fabric tail. One day I hope to be able to fully leap out of the water and do a dolphin like jump.
Thanks for your reply :)

@Raina: thanks for your reply! So a tail with competitor monofin wont fit in a large suitcase (used for air travel) either?
So with practice you can still do flips and turns? Great :)

Competitors are about 28” x 23”

@Mer-Crazy is that in inches or centimeters?

Isn't " the inches mark? Sorry I'm aussie and we use cm but the measurements I found were in inches so I used those

keep in mind most tails are bigger than the competitor once it is put inside a fluke and you will not be able to bend it in any way

" is used for inches, but Lyara is in the Netherlands, so based on what I heard Vincent Vega say in Pulp Fiction, they use the metric system.

Oh my god, Pearlie, that is the best confused Travolta I've ever seen. Now I have that song stuck in my head.

@mer-crazy: oh, yeah I guess! I use centimeters as well and am also a bit unfamiliar with the imperial system.
Thanks everyone for the info :)

Does any one know how the water way model one monofin compares to the competitor in a silicon tail?
