View Full Version : Thinking about horror movies :)

I've been spending Valentines' day watching horror films. I love to pick a film I've never heard of before or something that's been out for a while. It's kinda cool to get into a movie without any expectations. I like the story to be a surprise and it's nice to not be burdened by all the hype.

Anyway I find myself confused as to what typically qualifies as a "good" horror film. It seems when you look something up, half of the reviews say it was full of fantastic acting and direction, the rest say it's the worst film ever made. I don't get it. Do people simply want to make themselves seem more hard core, or is it that they're comparing it to the idea of how great they thought another film was?
I don't know. Maybe there's not enough blood and guts to make some people happy.

Any thoughts?

Horror movies give me nightmares so I never watch them.... Unless the thing causing the horror can be killed with a gun/knife/baseball bat. Then I'm fine ^_^ I think a good movie is what ever one you like :D

Watch Manos Hands of Fate hahaha. Worst movie ever - it's so ridiculous. MST3K has an episode on it.

IMDB gave it a 1.4, might be worth watching just to see how terrible:)

which it's now public domain and available to watch online apparently. Yay for us!

Oh you should watch Feast (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0426459/), however due to the hilarious nature of this movie you must watch it with other people and you must all place bets on who will survive (don't worry the movie makes it easy for you). Oh and you need to watch till the end of the credits to see everything that happens.

My husband has worked on several horror movies: Rob Zombie's Halloween, Piranha 3-D, and a bunch of more lower budget ones...

I like horror films that are low on blood & guts and high on psychological scare. Recently, I've been getting into Asian horror films. I think they're a LOT scarier than American films - mostly because all American scary movies are starting to look alike.

I feel the same way- I'm more interested in the suspense rather than the blood. It seems to me that suspense makes for a better story, where gore just is about shock.

Oh hey, have you seen Children of the Corn III? The ending sequence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN9itwVC8ys) is great. I do believe they're trying to pass off toys as the actors in a couple shots.

There's tons of disagreement whether a horror movie is good. I think you're right about the divisions between suspense and gore. Plus there are monster movies that can totally buck the trend, like zombie films.

Another problem is when things are supposed to be campy or low budget. Often people can't agree if it achieves "so-bad-its-good" as intended, or is just simply bad. Human Centipede is a case in point.

So, has anyone here watched the japanese gore/porn movie "Mermaid in a Manhole"? Synopsis from IMDB: An artist finds and rescues a mermaid in a sewer. He takes her home with him and she develops sores all over her body that begin to pustulate and bleed. He uses what oozes from her sores to paint her portrait. When he can no longer handle it anymore he breaks down and dismembers her body.

I love ALL kinds of horror movies... the good, the bad and the ugly. I can watch a really bad "B" movie or something I actually am freaked out by.
Some of my new favorites have been:
INSIDIOUS
HOUSE OF THE DEVIL
THE DESCENT (the first not the sequel)
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
THE FOURTH KIND
EVENT HORIZON
among many others...
I've always been pleased when a movie can make me use my mind more than the visuals on the screen. I thought the OTHERS was a brilliant movie, cause all of the fear came from the "unknown" in my head. But horror movies are always a debate, and one person's treasure is another person's trash. I like 'em all

i love horror films. im just so good at getting sucked in that i feel im in the movie sometime. i swear that i see kayako from the grudge down the hall every now and then. im playing F.E.A.R. on the xbox right now and i can't play without my friends around. its so much better when your working in a haunted house. i crawled around but never got the same reaction from the viewers.poping out and screaming works best.(off topic...)
