Hi everyone! So as I'm sitting back racking my brain for my new tail I'm now thinking about painting it. Last time I used a makeup brush and that got really really messy and I spilled a lot of the pigment (which for my college finances is very expensive lol). I was wondering if it's possible to paint an entire tail with the small jars of dragon skin thinned down? I don't want to buy a big gallon because I don't have the money and I don't want to make a sculpted tail from a scale sheet and molds.
If I do use the airbrush, how do I go about adding glitter to it? Should I just mix it into the thinned silicone with the pigments? Do I have to do a clear coat on top? Can I airbrush with dragonskin on top of the 100% caulking silicone? (I have tested the silicone and it is skin and fish safe). Will I have to worry about the color being see through?

Instead of glitter you could perhaps use like an iridescent or pearlescent powder? In personal experience it looks more realistic than even the super finest glitter, because even super fine glitter can clog the air brush. Or thats at least my experiences:p

You'll need an airbrush with a large enough nozzle to accommodate the spraying of glitter. Don't combine glitter and pigment, the pigment will hide all the glitter - do a glitter gloss coat on top of pigmented silicone. You'll need many coats of pigmented silicone to build a solid color.
Also, thinning silicone for airbrushing is a toxic and potentially flammable affair.
As for Dragonskin over caulk - not recommended. It won't adhere properly and may delaminate and peel. Test it as your results may vary.

Thanks! Looks like I'll be dusting my tail like last time , I was hoping there would be a beyter way to get that smooth blend colors. I'll have to put my painting skills to the test and try out different ways to blend the pigments as I dust them on.

Maybe you can do some tests thinning the caulking with novocs and using that in your airbrush. I have no idea if it would work but you could try

An airbrush isn't the be-all-and-end-all. [emoji846]
Your last tail turned out gorgeous. With practice, you'll be amazed how smoothly you can blend colours brushing them on.
If you've got one colour you want to fade into another, set out both colours and a separate brush for each. You might also want to mix them and make up an intermediate colour, again with its own brush.
Then work one colour, dusting the last part lightly so it's not completely saturated with the pigment, maybe just lightly dabbing rather than dusting. Then move onto the next, starting over the half-saturated bit.
I hope that makes sense!
