Lou's 3rd butterfly tail

... and another new topic for another new tail!

I've almost completed my last one (I'll update that thread with pictures later) and I've just got my pigments for my next tail.

This one will be based on a small tortoiseshell butterfly and will have no shortage of fins. It's going to be my biggest and heaviest tail, and the most flashy!

I'm really hoping to have both tails done in time for the uk merpod Christmas do in two weeks time, so we'll see how that goes.

And no, that foil is NOT going into this tail! It's just there to help balance my camera tripod. (What?? It works!!) I'm using a fibreglass fin in this one - it's not much smaller than the overall fluke size.

There's a lot of glitter in there, though the camera won't pick it up.

I'm going to be sticking fins on tonight. I've been playing around with the fins and I'm still undecided as to whether I'll have a dorsal and two hip fins, or stick two dorsals on as full length side fins. (Heel fins are a given!)

I had laid out the dorsal halves on either side of the body last night, and it looked really good... so I'm probably going to head that way. It wasn't what I had planned, but I really like it, and it'll be nice to do something a bit different.

All being well, I'll be swimming in this on Saturday!

I've used a light coat of chameleon pigment over the black areas. I love the iridescent sheen it gives - reminds me of a beetle!

I had my first swim in it on Thursday. Also my first time trying out a fibreglass fin. The best way I can describe it, is it felt like I was being slowed right down... but covering more distance at the same time. Weird... but I liked it!

I have to admit, I was so so so happy when I got my first look at the footage from the swim.

It was my first swim in a fibreglass fin and I was so relieved I could actually swim in it. I swam in it for a bit at the uk convention on Friday too, and every single muscle in my body now aches... a lot.

Very worth it, though!

Got on mn today specifically to check out tailmaking threads. You do not disappoint. Holy cow, I absolutely love how it moves and the butterfly inspiration and- I don't have any fins on my tail, and this gives me major fin envy, lol. So well done!!
