View Full Version : More mid-range tails on the market

It seems as if there are a lot of tailmakers coming out with more mid-price range tails recently (Mernation with their Genesis Line, Finfolk with their Mythic line, Mertailor added another fluke shape for his basic silicone, EvaTails with their Basic line, etc.)
I think it's pretty great, personally, as a mermaid who wants something more realistic than a fabric tail, but doesn't have the funds for/can't justify spending the money for a full silicone tail.
What are your thoughts on this? Are any mers looking into possibly purchasing one of these tails? (Or have found other midrange tail lines?)

I think it might be a great option for someone, but not for me personally.
I guess it's like a phone. There's iPhone 7 but you're buying an iPhone 5c... Does it make sense? [emoji28]
I don't want to offend anyone though. I'm going to make a neoprene tail with sequins for myself and I hope that one won't turn out a Nokia 6100 [emoji33][emoji23]

I think it's a good thing, there is a demand, and tailmakers are rising to fill that demand.

It's actually very smart marketing move which I think will only increase company's high-end tail sales on top of the mid-range tails

Agreed...a mid-range tail would be the perfect gateway tail on the current to full, high-end silicone

I think the key is they found ways to make midrange tails without going bankrupt. I know when Merbellas tried it the mid range tails cost her much more time than her full ones, and people expected the same level from mid range as they did with her full, so for her it just wasn't worth it.
With finfolk semi-mass producing their new mythic line I really feel it helps fill a huge gap. I am happy to see it so successful!

i think its really good.
1. i am new to mermaiding (4 months in) so i am still training with my merfin
2. i bought a mythic tail from finfolk, my first full tail. I was close to buying a fin fun tail then the mythic line came out. the fin fun tails are brilliant but i wanted something a little more professional, as I plan to do gigs in the future and I want to swim in the ocean too, which I've learned the finfun tails aren't really designed for ocean swimming.
3. I wanted a tail that had a proper mono fin incorporated in it, the mythic tails come with the finis shooter
4. I cannot afford 3-5k for a silicone tail and the mythic line seems perfect for me right now.

Business-wise, it's a brilliant move; especially with people not able to afford higher-end silicone ones.
Social: it's cool because it'll bring more exposure to our community (just hopefully good ones)
Pet-peeve-wise, it bugs me people still bug everyone to put them cheaper, like no you don't go into an Apple store and ask them to give you $300 off the new iPhone. Or if you do they'll tell you no. Why do you think other businesses would do the opposite by saying yes? These aren't even mass produced, it's art. Maybe I should have used the Mona Lisa instead a mass-producing Apple company but it's the first example that comes to mind (and also second-mentioned :P)
Personally, they're not for me. I'd rather save up for a more personalized and "elaborate" tail (since they cut down a lot of the customization for good reason).

I agree. I love that there are new more affordable tails, but I personally would have a full silicone tail, and customized to represent me. In about five or six years, I hope to be able to either order or create my tail, probably create it myself since the plans are so detailed. I'm waiting until the time when a tail can represent me, and these moderately priced tails are not custom, at least not FinFolk's.
Of course, mine is going to be fairly complicated, with different hardnesses of silicone, translucent parts, and coverage over my entire torso, as well as no monofin but with the swimability of one. I don't know if even FinFolk would take on that challenge!

I think it's wonderful there are mid ranged tails around now. I remember when I first got into mermaiding and I knew $3000+ for a tail was way too much when I wasn't sure how I'd go with it. But $1000 was a lot better. And were I in that position again or didn't have a new silicone tail on the way I'd be buying a mid-ranged one in a heartbeat

I'm really excited about the new Fin Folk tails. I have fabric and neoprene tails, but I've always dreamed of having something more life like. Hopefully the reviews are good, because they fit perfectly into my price range.

I am really excited about it. I also agree that I too want a tail that I can fully customize to my personal 'dream tail' design. BUT, the reality is, what if I spent all that money on a dream silicone tail and never really used it? What if I ended up not enjoying a full silicone tail? I feel like these new mid-ranged tails help us mers making that transition from fabric to something more expensive because it helps us 'test' if we really are ready for a fully customized silicone tail. It can also help mers who want to start a mermaid business look more realistic without paying as much. Then further down the road if they are doing well with their business they can invest in the higher priced tails.
I think that even mers who already have a full silicone tail would find these mid-ranged tails enticing because now they can more easily get a second nice tail so that they can have a nice backup tail like one tail could be designated only for kids parties while the other is for everything else, etc.
Just a side note - when I say 'more realistic' I am not trying to put down fabric tails. I have certainly seen very realistic fabric tails. I think by realistic it is more a comment about the texture and dimensionality more so than the overall look. ;)

I think more options is always a good thing. Everyone has their own desires for what they want. Some want to spend a bunch of money on something that will be perfect for gigs. Others want something nice but don't wanna break the bank. And yet still, others are just trying to live a childhood dream. I only recently got a fabric tail and have yet to swim in it (curse you SoCal and your cold winters yet lack of indoor pools x.x) so I won't be getting something like this anytime soon, but if I get promoted at work I would totes save up for a midrange tail. Not looking to be pro, just wanna be a mermaid princess <3

I am looking for a Mythic tail size XS. Would you be willing to part with yours?

Why don't you just save up and buy one new? They aren't THAT expensive, and I'm sure they probably take pre-orders.

Just an update: I know he's kind of a controversial figure, but the Mertailor has just released another mid-range tail line:
The Spellbound line, which is comparable in price to Finfolk's Mythic line and seems to be a partial silicone tail (fabric lined with sculpted silicone over it) with a standard fluke sculpt and a few standard color designs (although customization is possible.)

I don't know or care to know why they're controversial,
after owning and selling on a mythic tail this spellbound line would be the next option for me. Only with the new Sirena fluke though, much prefer it over the Triton fluke.
