I'm guessing that at least half of us have had a pet fish in their life. This is a post for us all to talk about our aquatic companions!

I've had a few pet fish throughout my limited years, a few bettas, a few goldfish that I promptly held funerals for the next day, a seemingly invincible Nerite snail named Little Red, some cherry shrimp that had a knack for disappearing, and the most hardy little Harlequin Rasboras on earth. They were all great little fish, but I think I mostly connected with Little Red. She had her ups and downs, but she just kept swimming! Or... crawling?

Tell me about your fish friends!

Awww!! This is so Fintastic, I love it! I've had so many fish friends!

I believe my very first fish were a pair of big old gold fish I got somewhere between the ages of 3-6. They were of course named after my imaginary (er invisible/Magical) friends at the time, and for the life of my I have no idea how to spell the first's name to give it a sound... Sort of like Gone-ee? The other was Shrimpy. We have pictures of the birthday party somewhere, me smiling gigantic, hair in curls, looking at the fish in the bowl.

My grandparents for as long as I can remember had a giant fish tank in their house (like serious this thing is almost as big as our first flat screen tv) and in it was a pair of gigantic, "ugly-fish"- one whose name was Oscar. They also had a Sucker-fish who went without a name- just "Mr. The Sucker Fish". I loved those fish and would get so very excited to see them. I never did find out what kind of fish Oscar was. My Grandfather always just said he was an "ugly-fish".

I also took home the Kindergarten class pet at the end of the year, a bright blue betta fish with his aquatic side-kick "Snaily-boy!". (Who was a snail that I loved, by my mother thought was disgusting.) We kept that fish for a very long time too...

Several goldfish and a few bettas later (oh and some neon fish that my younger cousin and I co-owned... though they lived at her house, since they had the giant fish tank). I am now the proud owner of Sherlock the betta. Sherlock isn't like the other fish I've owned... He's well different. The most personality I've ever had with a fish- which is great because he was sort of an emotional support animal in my transition to life on a college campus. We bought Sherlock a couple weeks before I moved away from home, and my younger brother got a pair of goldfish (RIP Kalbit his wife Melissa still going strong though.) My mother unfortunately made the mistake of trying to put the Goldfish in their bowl too soon, and they went into a bit of shock... So as I was putting Sherlock (who by the way had tried to flip his cup over multiple times as I was trying to adjust him to the new water temperature) into his little tank, I said "Please don't be like them, you don't get to play dead." - and off I went for a few minutes. When I came back, he was curled up a little in the corner of his tank- playing dead. I walked over all worried he wasn't going to be okay (even though I let him sit and adjust to the water for a little longer than the recommended time) and he just looked at me like "What? what do you want?" and started swimming around... It took us a few days to come up with his name. He reminded me (after several rude instances) of the rather sarcastic character on one of my mother and I's favorite tv shows. So I walked over and said, "What if I called you Sherlock?" He swam right up to look at me and spat out a huge bubble in my face- so Sherlock it was. He's been a pain in my fins ever since... Seriously though I really love this fish.

Oh wow... it sounds like you really have a special bond with Sherlock. Maybe he knows that you're different, too. That you aren't one of those people in the petstore, that you're a mer. I'm so happy for you two!
