So I'm almost done with my fluck and I wanted to know what product to use to make clay not stick to the plaster. I read a lot of people use Petroleum Jelly....but I'm not sure if this method would work? I want to make sure my clay stay in shape if the plaster doesn't work well the first time and to make the clay re-used-able for future tail sculpting.

I used Pastalina Van Aken (it's oil based) I didn't use a release and it came out just fine. I didn't use a release with the CraftSmart clay (not oil-based) either, but there was no way I could have gotten it out whole.

My suggestion is if you used an oil-based clay that doesn't dry you won't have to use a release and it will be reusable...

If you are using a clay that dries, my CraftSmart clay dries and when I poured plaster on it, it soaked up the water and became reusable, I just had to scrap it out of my scale molds…

Exactly as Izzy said above. Oil based clay should come out really easily. I've used my clay several times with plaster and the casts always come out clean :)

I have oil base clay, I've been using, because I didn't want my clay drying out well designing the fluck and scales. So with oil base clay you should need to worry about your scalp getting depositories getting it out of the plaster? I want to save my clay design flack after taking it out of the plaster.

I used oil based clay to make my fluke sculpt after I poured the plaster on it and the plaster hardened I took it out. Since I had no intentions on saving it, I just ripped it out, but if you are really careful you can take it out in one piece. There may be a few little tiny, tiny pieces that get left behind but you can take that out. The small pieces of clay left behind won't affect the curing of dragon skin silicone as long as it the clay is sulfur free...

Okay, thanks I don't mind fixing a few spots but I'd like to keep the shape for the most part.

No problem! I understand....I have reused the clay I used to sculpt my fluke several times. Oil-based clay is very helpful...[emoji3]

Well I want to reuse the design of my flack because I'm make a top half that covers my feet with straps. Then after I make the mold take the a design and flatten th feet part to make the bottom half. I want my mono fin to be 1 price without the ugly flipper feet.

I'm basing my design off of this girl a bit.

Sounds like a good plan! I made my fluke sculpt where I could customise the area were my feet are as I put my tail together (mostly because I made my own monofin and it a little different)

Oh and if you are using plaster to make your mold be sure to re-enforce it with something or it will crack really easy when it flip it...(mine did two and I had to fill it in with clay)
