Hey guys, taking an idea from lanternfish and other bio-luminescent sea-dwellers, I was wondering if anyone has ever made a glow-in-the-dark tail, and if one was going to make it, what materials would you use?

I believe melbel was going to make a skeleton tail that glows :)

Raven just made one that glows under black light! It's bi-luminescent. She made mine so it does it too, it glows orange! I think to glow in the traditional way things glow though you'd need that green paint and it would limit your tail colours, but Raven has done it with invisible black light paint under regular light, then totally awesome under black light. Check on the thread on her new tail

Malinghi, you are AWESOME! I actually made my boyfriend a tron jacket last year for a local anime convention and we were approached by the DJ who requested that we make him one as well. (It never ended up coming to fruition, but it was completely awesome anyways. XD ) Anyways, we were planning on making me a Rinzler costume for this year until we changed plans and moved on to Sheik and Ganondorf instead.

Now I really want to stick Rinzler and merfolk together... And when you think about it, that helmet would make swimming very interesting...

Side note, Derezzed is one of my favorite songs from the movie. I own the soundtrack and I must admit, long drives on the highway are SO much more fun when this is playing. Especially if you have a deep bass. X3

I really like Tron. I went to Dragoncon as Sam Flynn this year. And I agree about derezzed. I think Daft Punk really reigned in some of their more typical club music impulses since it was a movie and not a 2 hour Daft Punk music video, so derezzed was a great gift to the fans to make sure they at least got one really great danceable track from the movie.

...Now if you want a 2 hour Daft Punk music video, that would be interstella 5555 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iW13eU9WiU).

Haha, did anyone know that mers tend to love Daft Punk and TRON?

For Halloween this past year I went as Kevin Flynn in the flashback scenes were he is wearing the leather jacket with the lit bar on it. I don't know if that was what you were thinking of Lorelei, but I was really pleased with it.

Also, driving into or out of Los Angeles at night with this sound track is super awesome.

what if you made the tail with spots that are a bit translucent that you can slip a 'throwie' into http://www.instructables.com/id/LED-Throwies/ like these..

Super cheap to make, and you could replace them after a week or so or just when ever really.
Something like that any way.. Just a thought...

I've never seen Throwies before. Thsoe are really cool. :3

Green- Here's a picture of the actual jacket and jeans.

My guy is on the left. I made him a street tron outfit, so he's wearing a normal leather jacket with a pair of dark wash jeans. My brother messed with his tron disk so that it stays lit for as long as we want and you can't see it, but we made a port on the back of his jacket so his disk could hang on his back. The guy on the right just happened to be at the convention. His outfit was a lot brighter, but it was made mostly of cardboard. It looked good in the dark though. :P

Ok so I was chatting with Aqua and sunrise about glowing tails and the possibility of uv reactive paint..

So... maybe you take THIS > http://www.amazon.com/Ultraviolet-LED-flashlight-Blacklight-7202UV395/dp/B001Q70A0G/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_c

and put it in an airtight around the base of the pool and then paint the tails with uv reactive paint.. turn out the lights..
But the water has to be fairly clean, no well water.. it makes it murky.
And also I would invest in a pair of these little babies > http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Anti-Fog-U-V-Protection-Lens-Racing-Swim-Goggles-/390315292990?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA% 252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D390318 241227%26ps%3D54

So your eyes dont burn during prolonged exposure..

What do you guys think?

Perhaps glow in the dark paints and powder? I've posted this site before, I haven't tried it, but they have lots of colours and different powders/paints for different applications:
http://glowinc.com/
And their forum on all things glowy:
http://www.glowforum.com/
Somewhere they had a thread about someone making the bottom of their pool have glowing stars. They were discussing the longevity of paint and how to seal it, but ,of course, they weren't taking flexability into consideration.
Fishing and tackle subforum:

I perused that website a bit and came across a person who printed t-shirts with the glow paint. That means that not only does it dry flexible, it also handles being washed so submergence shouldn't be a problem. It looks like certain colors, red especially, fade drastically pretty quickly, so that's something to look out for if using this product. Also, I bet if it silicon was pigmented with this stuff or if the silicon was applied on top, it would act to seal the paint.

On the subject of Tron, did you guys see that they're making a Tron cartoon with Elijah Wood? I don't want to get my hopes up, but this looks pretty good.

I have used acrylics like these: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=110873098372&index=5&nav=SEARCH&nid=37227594910
to paint on fabric, lots of colors and they washed well ( I heat set them with an iron) but this was on cotton. I was thinking of adding some to silicone caulking and piping it onto my fluke and fins with a cupcake decorator. I wonder if it would set on top of lumiere though, that would make things look awesome. Ah, they also glow in uv, if I remember correctly. :)

If you could find a ph netrual powdered form of glow dust you could add it to Jacquards neopaque extender and paint it on, but I don't know if such a powdered pigment exists. :/ might just be nonsense as I don't know how they glow in the first place. Lol

Great idea though, a glowing tail. Very much wanting to incorporate the idea, especially after face off did the whole bioluminescence thing a while back :).

There are glow in the dark sequins, that can be sewn into a tail.

Mermaid Tula

I've had this in my ebay watch list for quite some time now, with ideas for mixing it into caulking for tiles in my bathroom.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300750402331?var=600052310036&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

So I'm sure you could mix this into the silicone for a tail.

I made a tail with tubing from home depot that I used along what lines I wanted to look like the "bones" in my fluke. then sealed 5he outside edges of the tubes with silicone chaulk. Then i put pin holes for drainage of water. the tubes open ends were put into the end of the tail near my feet. I then bought many cans of the necklaces they sell at fairs that glow when you bend them to release glowing chemicals. The necklaces are child safe and never leak. I then insert the glow necklsces into the tubes when I want my fluke to glow. when I hang the tail upside down to dry the glow sticks slowly slide out and can be replaced the next time I want to glow. it also gives me the versatility of changing my glow colors to whatever I am in the mood for.

I love the glow stick idea! I am also using vinyl tubing in my tail and had a few queries. Do you have any problems with air in them? Are they hard to keep clean, or rather, do they grow mold? I am very new to this, so thanks for your time!
