View Full Version : It's finally time... I'm getting a silicone tail - but from whom?!

Hi everyone! ^-^
Well, it looks like I've finally gotten enough money together to have a silicone tail made.
But... I don't really know a lot about tailmakers.
I hear that FinFolk is amazing, but also very expensive and I'm a little worried about the customization - I think I'll want some things a little different than their usual fluke, for example. It would also take like a year to make them (ouch).
MerBella is gorgeous but some people tell me that the tails are less durable than those from FinFolk.
The MerTailor is supposedly good but I've heard a lot of horror stories about that, too...
Does anyone have an idea about where to order? :-)
Thanks a lot <3

Hi Stella,
I think Finfolk has 8 standard flukes from which you can choose, and I think they can even be customized to your preferences. For example, I'm saving up for a finfolk tail with fluke that looks like a Butterfly fluke, but slightly different.
But if you do not want any wait time, I guess you'll have to do with Merbella or Mertailor. I have heard many positive stories about Merbella. If you maintain your tail properly, it'll probably be fine.
Another option is to continue saving in order to pay for rush option at Finfolk. But I have no idea how much extra you'll need to pay, and how much shorter the wait time will be.

There is also Mernation, See Through Sea and my favourite Tail of Art by Mermaid Kariel ;)
All these tailmakers are fast, great quality and great communication.

Sadly Merbellas isn't accepting any new orders and probably never will or just not the same way Mermaid Raven used to.
I would recommend Kariel's Tails of Art or Mernation. While Kariel's tails are definitely high up on the rank in quality, Mernation is improving with every new tail.
I've been in communication with the Mernation team for a long time as I save for my tail and they're some of the sweetest people I've met! They go above and beyond to make sure your questions are answered. Their wait from the time you order to the time you receive your tail is one of the shortest. I've also heard their $2,700 tails are cast thicker than others, which might help ease your worry of durability :o
Kariel's tails- my gosh I can't speak enough good of how her love for her work shines through with her vibrant fairy-tale-esque style. It might look great for you, Stella. I've heard Kariel is really great at working with her customers to make sure they get the tail they want.
If you're looking to pick from the more popular tailmakers I'd say try your luck and wait for a Finfolk. The twins may have a long waiting list but with some of their amazing fluke options like the Lotus and Calypso- it could be worth it.

Also something to think about during the research phase is to contact the makers. See if you can get input from them directly, especially if you have questions about durability, materials, and styles.

Another option is Sirenalia.
They're a *relatively* new tailmaker so they're wait time isn't as long because they do not have as many orders. Also I have heard nothing but positive feedback about their tails. Tails start at $2000, with extra charges for extra fins, colors, etc. which is pretty standard.

Does anyone know if there is a silicone tail maker based in Europe? I can't think of any but would like to know.

This is a great place to do your research especially since you're considering diving into the waters of silicone tails. Check out all the tailmaker reviews on here to help you as well as read through the specific threads.
Merbellas has stopped taking custom orders for the foreseeable future. So I wouldn't even consider that route.
Finfolk, while they have a long waiting list, has many many options and customization choices, as far as price goes, yes they're expensive, but all tailmakers are, most silicone tails are going to be in the 3-5k range no matter who you go to. The waiting is also similar I think with most makers as tail construction takes a long time.
Kariel has absolutely been turning out some beauties lately as has Pearliemae, both their colors and flukes are beautiful and faerielike.
I would caution you against Mertailor, most mer's would in my experience. You have a 50/50 shot of getting a dud plus the customization is nil. I had an original mertailor tail back in the day and it was...meh. It came in the wrong color and was chunky and unflattering.
Good luck in your search!

As far as I know there aren't any :( I can make silicon tails, but I only made mine and will start on a second one for a friend next month.

Lyara,
EvartFX/EvaTails is based in Russia. She makes silicone tails (and, more recently, partial silicone). I know Russia is often seen as "walking the line" between being considered a European nation vs. an Asian nation, so I don't know if that "counts", in your mind.
There is a tailmaker, Aurore La Sirene, who is from France. However, she has gotten some pretty poor reviews by a few mers, both for her tails and her behavior. Also, she apparently uses tin cure silicone, not platinum, which can be unsafe for the skin.

There is the mermaid kat shop in located Deutschland but there tails... I don't know don't really like them myself because you can see the seems very obvious... and they cost almost the same as other tails :/ and as Mermaid Lazuli said you have the company based in russia (they are pretty cool and heard good things about them) and the french Aurore La Sirene but I don't think that's the best idea to buy from her as Lazuli said...

Hi Black Pearl ,
If you haven't made your decision yet , I suggest Syren Studios! Lily is the tail-maker , and every tail review I've read is 100% good! She's located in the U.S , sadly. Shipping cost overseas is pretty crazy , honestly.
She has (I think) 3/4 flukes available right now , and each fluke has mix and match fins! You can even do customs.
On video on YouTube is really splendid , it's by TheMagicCrafter.
I know Lily just had a baby , so there could be some delay with processing and what not.
And I agree with Nerenia , I just would avoid Mertailors silicone tails altogether. The designs may look nice , but his stock photos are severely photoshoped and edited.
Another tail-maker is MerrowFins , who is also located in the U.S . He has basic silicone tails , full silicone tails , and I think a partial silicone tails. I have no idea what his wait time is , though.
And for FinFolk , no matter how awesome they are , they are SWAMPED. I think it would be wise to eliminate them from the future tail maker list .
And Raven from Merbella has started to post on Instagram today , and one of her tails will be up for sale shortly . (I can't link , but it's the very first post on her page!)
In short , this tail has a silver purple base color , hip fins , darker purple stripes with a slight green color in them , and black dots around the fluke. The fluke also has a yellow/ivory color. It also looks like it has a blended waist.
^-^ I hoped I helped some!! And good luck finding your tail-maker!

I make silicone tails for others, I'm based in Belgium. I just started out so the prices are low at the moment
PS, the last picture is made prior to attaching the scales to the fluke. That's why it looks a tad bit weird.

One perk of new tailmakers is they are often willing to customize for you for a little less.

Yes. :) I'm sure she'll update soon enough. I know she was working on the next video.
Mermaid Saoirse is correct. The Mernation ladies are some of the sweetest. Mermaid Elodea has some stories on durability of their tails that will make you laugh and praise the toughness of their product. Mine also is durable and thick-walled. I've never had to worry about ripping. On that note, if you order a dorsal, request that it is reinforced with power mesh it's entire length.
I have seen several of Kariel's tails be baggy at the knees, but they are gorgeous.

You say say to ask mernation to reinforce dorsal with power mesh? Why? I am getting my tail from them.

i highly advise mernation the lady's there are amazeing and Erin truly takes care of you and answered your questions. Their wait time is short. They have different fluke shapes and options on thickness. You should check out both their face book and web sight. This is the destine they have drawn up for me they also have you send in your measurements with a duck tape dummy so they can recreate your shape to make your tail. 41726

I have been looking at Seethroughsea, but have only seen one review on youtube. Is there any forum with seethroughsea reviews? I want to know how the seams look and how their customer service and such is before I put in the money myself
