It was really comfortable and easy to maneuver....I swam in it and thought about pre ordering it, but I didn't know when I would use it and I am on a budget from making my silicone tail...the only down sounds to it was that it doesn't give a lot of proportion like a shooter, because it's flowy, but I guess that's expected. Since I have a MagicTail I didn't mind it. It really made you feel like a fish

Maybe a Finis Luna would be good in a silicone tail because if silicone only sticks to silicone you could easily stick it to this monofin?
Oh oh or it could be easy to re-paint this monofin because you just get some pigment and a trial size of silicone and then paint this fin the way you want? Wait! That could mean you might be able to just make the silicone body then attach it straight to this monofin and you wouldn't have to make a silicone fluke at all...Unless if you wanted to spend time sculpting one but otherwise you could just paint the monofin. I see a lot of possibilities with this.
I really like the shape of this monofin and I am so glad it has individual foot pockets and straps.
I am just not sure yet if it would be too floppy for me. I have only used a Finis Rapid monofin.

How big was this fin? I'm having a hard time judging. I'm pretty excited about it, regardless! I like floppier fins and it's nice to have an adult monofin shaped more like a "traditional" fluke.

I was looking through some of the Mermania photos and in one photo of the Finis booth the Luna monofin looked to be the same size as the Finis Rapid they had next to it on the table. I thought it was smaller than that until I saw the photo.

I don't really know exact measurements, but I'd say that the bigger one in the widest part is about 2 feet wide maybe...and the smaller one for smaller feet is probably 4 to 6 inches smaller in width...it's all very floppy

I didn't try it in the pool, but I did try it on. I have a Womens Size 9 Wide foot, and when I tried it on, my left foot fit comfortably, but the right foot heel strap was just a tad too tight. The lady at the booth said that they will probably be coming out with a size Large (I tried the Medium), after all the feedback they got from folks trying it at Mer-Mania. I also tried putting it in my tailskin, which was made for a Fin Fun monofin. It was a good fit width-wise, but it is a bit longer and less crescent-shaped than the Fin Fun, so it stuck out of the skin along the bottom edge a bit.

That's good to know! Most of the time monofins tend to be hidden when swimming in the water too. Will there be a small size also?

I felt like it powered through the water as well as the monofin in my MagicTail (I have an older model), but it definitely would not compare to the propulsion of a Finis Shooter, because it's floppy after all. I think it actually makes you feel more like a fish.

Ahh cool, I thought so, so basically the difference is rubber x silicone... cool.
I wish they would make one with pastel neutral colors with some specks of shine... flakes... idk... with glitter maybe? lol
(after writing I guess I have a pretty specific idea of what I want. )

I think they will cost around the same as a Wave maybe...I can't remember. I wished I would have snagged one up for myself at MerMainia, but I decided against it because I am making a silicone tail at the moment. And I agree, the Mer world has advanced so much just in the four years since I bought my fabric tail!

They look pretty cool. The shape is interesting, though it has something of a "closed" feel to it (not sure if that makes sense XD). Additionally being made of silicone I don't see them having a lot of propulsion. I think it will be interesting to see others using them and to read some reviews.

They really don't have a lot of propulsion. It was about the same amount as MagocTail monofin.

Hey guys, I saw that no one had answered about the tin or platinum cure, so I went ahead and asked where I was already getting answers about other stuff: Instagram of all places! They DM'ed me an answer:
"Hi there, I reached out to the developer to answer your question and the answer is below. The fin is not a cast silicone product. It is a compression molded part, it's a different kinda of silicone for mass production. Our fins are heated to be cured. Does that help? Please don't hesitate to ask more questions."
Also I just got mine and will be testing it out today! I'll let you all know how it goes, I'm sooo excited! This is my first monofin/swimmable mermaiding accessory, squee!!!

I had a little chat with the folks at Finis when they launched the Luna Fin in the UK - they said that they would work on more if the demand was there. I tried the fin out, it is floppy and the propulsion is ok(ish) if you don't mind the work.... I feel that there is not enough fin to get the effect that they are after.... power and prettiness, they need a little more built in structure I think) but otherwise very comfortable and yeah I dont see why you cant add them to silicon skins, as suggested above

Ocean - would you say the Luna performs the same as their foil monofin or is the foil better?
Ocean
06-23-2017, 08:27 PM
Well I would say the the foil has more sturdiness but I loved the soft flow feel of the Luna - if you want power I'd stick with foil.... however I tried a medium Luna so maybe a large will create that surface space needed for propulsion.... I really struggle to swim in any finis fins but from the two I take the foil....... then if we are talking comfort, which effect performance... then Id be torn between the two.

Hi guys, I heard back from Finis yesterday. Here is what she said: "I reviewed your photos and compared to the fins I have in the showroom here. Most have slight imperfections of the upper layer of the silicone. I took one and we scraped off the imperfection to see if it would weaken the silicone. We saw no issues after using the fin. Your fin should perform perfectly fine. If you prefer to return the fin for exchange we can arrange that or if an issue does arise we can address it at that point."
I went ahead and tested it out today, and it seems the imperfections have not caused any issue. Since I plan to make a tailskin or two for it, I'm not too terribly worried about how it looks personally, but if you are you may want to go somewhere where you can buy it in person rather than online.
The monofin is AWESOME. It's gorgeous, and from a distance, the imperfections are not visible. Because it's silicone it seems to have more flex than the fiberglass ones I've seen in videos. For me that is better because even if the propulsion is less, the tips are so bendy and pretty, and the whole point of this monofin is to look more mermaid-y, which it certainly does accomplish. And it definitely has more propulsion than, say, my bare feet, so there is that. I can get about 1.5 times as far with the monofin than without it.
I LOVE my Luna monofin now that I've gotten to use it, and the customer service from Finis was wonderful as well. I hope you guys enjoy yours if you get one! 💙

Thank you for this! I have particularly been interested in how the Luna compares to the Mahina. I am trying to stay away from anything made with natural rubber latex, and most monofins are either latex or some uncomfortable plastic. I still want all of the speed, flexibility, and stability though. I want to be a fish!
I'm also wanting to know if and how the Luna can be used in full tails, once I figure out if I can swim with it. At this point, it sounds like it will be worth it to try.

If you want speed I would suggest to use a fin made out of fiber but they need a lot of power. You may need to train up for such a fin.

I want propulsion, but I also want the mermaid look and feel to build around. But beyond that, it still has to be comfortable. And it has to be non allergenic. If anybody has a list of really good monofins that are not made with latex, that would be awesome. That especially includes foot pockets. anything with latex needs to be labeled. That is a health concern for anybody not just me.

Just got mine and swam in it yesterday! I'll obviously be doing a review, but here are my first impressions:
1. Its very cute and mermaidy
2. Quite comfortable and has decent straps, though hard for me to quickly remove
3. Flows very well and is completely weightless - I did all kinds of swimming and playing for an hour and a half and barely noticed it there!
4. Has some but not a ton of propulsion. I'll talk more about it in my review, but I feel like it hardly does anything in regards to getting a powerful kick.
Would recommend as a toy and fun play monofin but not my preference - the Mahina is where its at!

I was wondering if it might be effective to put some boning (with padding) into the fluke of the tailskin. Perhaps help the fabric keep its shape rather than depending on the monofin to do it all on its own.

I noticed a review online by Aquamermaid(?) that had some good video of her swimming underwater with it. Since it's silicone, I'm interested in building a tail around it and perhaps expanding the size of the fin. I'll bet since it's already very floppy there's a chance that encasing it in a larger silicone fin could make it swishier but with even less propulsion.

07-10-2017, 07:51 PM
So far, I've seen 3 or 4 swims/reviews of this one. I still really want it to work for me, just because of the silicone vs latex thing. I would build a fluke up around any monofin anyway, at least a little. It IS starting to sound like it's worth a try. If nothing else, I can use it just for exercise.

Probably not, actually. Or worse, trying to adhere other silicone to it, might melt it. I honestly think, when all is said and done, that is probably going to be the major problem with this fin.

I believe they said if the monofin was popular enough they would be producing in larger sizes and possibly later on, giving you the option to pick size AND color rather than being stuck with certain colors for certain sizes? The purple and orange you're seeing is I believe a larger size or men's size [emoji1]

Okay so I've been researching monofins too and this is the one I'm stuck on. I really like it from what I've seen but I have one hangup. My shoe size ranges from 6.5-5 so, I would have to get the smaller watermelon looking one. I really don't like the color scheme.
I plan on easing myself into mermaiding so once I get a monofin I'm going to swim with only that for a while. My question is if it's important that you love how your monofin looks and if so is there a way I could paint it to fit my mermaid style?

Regarding liking how your monofin looks, I think that is something you have to answer for yourself. For me I was actually disappointed because I loved the watermelon colors but have big feet, and thought long and hard about whether I could love a monofin in a color I didn't choose. However the latex-free point of this monofin won me over because of my allergy, and it turns out the color is amazing in person. Perhaps you will like the watermelon color once you see it? And I think regardless of color, once you swim in it you will love it anyway. I personally fell in love not necessarily because of how it looks but because this is MY fin, an outward representation of my mermaid heart [emoji170] Almost as if I'm growing my tail from the feet up, lol. And through loving this monofin, whose colors I didn't choose, my own mermaid color wants have changed a little bit, which I never expected. I'm not saying you'll be the same, just giving my own experience [emoji4]
As for painting the fin, personally I have no experience with this as my painting skills are nil. Since this is a more expensive monofin, up there with the Mahina, I would say tread carefully. Sorry this was so long, haha

Thank you! No it's good information, thank you so much. I'm sure I will love it the model is the closest to what I want and I've got a few months before I plan on ordering it. So I've got some time to think. My mermaid aesthetic is more dark shades of blue so I can think of this as where I start before more I make my "transformation into my true mermaid self". :) or something like that. Thanks again!

I wear a size 6 shoe, so I have small feet (my Mahina is the largest child size). I have the adult Luna on the green/blue color scheme and it fit great. I wore thin neoprene socks with it as I had rubbed horrible blisters on my feet with my Mahina. You should be fine with the adult Luna.

I wore both sizes MerMainia and I wear normally a size 6.5. Both fit well, the larger one was definitely looser in the bottom part of the footpockets, but the adjustable straps held my feet in well.
And I understand, I love the blue green a lot more than the red yellow combo. I know that they mentioned to me they hope to sell enough to where in the future you will be able to choose your colors.

Okay I'm thinking I might do that. I've got a bit to think over it I'll probably get it for Christmas. So I've got a bit of time. This is good to know though because I've seen review videos where people say otherwise so I was going by that but slowly through discussion I'm leaning towards taking my chances with the blue green. Thank you so much!

It does NOT fit into a FinFun tailskin. I tried it. The tips did not curl up, but the fabric is too short and exposes the bottom part of the fin.

I had the opportunity to try a FinFun monofin the other night and didn't care for the way it pushed my ankles together, or how the Lexan piece pulled away from my feet with every kick. Plus I'm knock-kneed, so having separate foot pockets like in my Luna is perfect. Haven't seen or tried a Mirage but I'm on a very strict budget right now so looking for something that will fit my big booty, my current monofin, and my wallet. It's a challenge but I'm up to it! Having obtained a Sun Tails monofin, I love it. It's comfy on the feet, the velcro straps HOLD your foot in, and the fin shape as well as the material (plastic) has great flex, YET reasonably stiff. I also love how the neoprene 'foot sock' wraps around the fin itself. Some rather clever engineering in MHO... It's also easy to INTENTIONALLY kick out of in an emergency situation as well.

I am very interested in the Finis Luna. Courtney Mermaid has done a review of it on YouTube. I'm wondering how it compares with the Finis Foil in size, propulsion, etc. The Foil is good in that it is made of rubber, and there is no fear of injuring anyone else if one has to share a lane in a pool. I have seen comparisons of the Foil with the Mahina, and the Mahina seems like a monster compared to the Foil. My guess is that the Luna is also larger than the Foil. There is also the price difference. The Foil is about US$60 or less, whereas the Luna is closer to US$100. I will stay tuned and hope that some Mer does a comparative review of the pros and cons of the Finis Foil and the Finis Luna.

The silicone of the Luna is heat cured, so I'm not sure that any other silicone would properly adhere and cure. If you try it out, do let us know how it goes!
By the way, there are one or two companies who make tails without monofins, so I would think that yes, there would be enough propulsion to swim in. Perhaps just not enough to go very fast [emoji6]

Thank you both for your help :) I'll try some silicone on the Luna to see whether it cures. If it doesn't stick to it that's no problem... on other monofins it wouldn't adhere either but I can work with power mesh and Silpoxy ;)

Hey guys :) For the case that someone is interested in my results: I tested Dragon Skin 10 medium on 4 monofins: Foil, Luna and Shooter by Finis and the Hydra. All monofins were washed with isopropyl alcohol first. This is recommended especially for the rubber parts like the footpockts of the shooter or the whole Foil. The silicone cured on the 3 Finis monofins but NOT on the footpocket part of the Hydra. Here it remained competely sticky! On the Foil and on the Footpockets of the Shooter it cured a little bit more slowly. On the Luna and on the fiberglass blade of the Shooter it cured perfectly fine. Nevertheless I won't use the Luna because of it's poor propulsion :)

If the silicone does stick to the Luna, can't you add something stiffer into the monofin to improve the propulsion?

It doesn't stick to the Luna, probably because it is another type of silicone...

Ok. I asked, because your update said it did, and you just wouldn't be using the Luna because of the propulsion issue. I have two Mahinas and a Luna, but haven't swam in the Luna yet. I am allergic to the rubber of the Mahina, but won't compromise on the propulsion, so I suffer through it. If I can make the Luna swim better, that would work for me. I will probably just make a monofin from scratch then.

Does it work in the ocean?Personally I wouldn't recommend it unless you have someone right there with you. It's very soft and the propulsion might not get you through the swells with enough strength to get you to the surface should the worst happen.

Thanks to your suggestion I looked up a video tutorial for repairing silicone mermaid tails with silpoxy, and using that was able to repair and use my monofin. But my boyfriend also bought me a new fin at the same time just in case it didn't work, so now I have two! [emoji23]
Whelp..getting my Christmas present early. I was browsing amazon a few days ago and managed to hit the “buy with one one click now” button and not even realize it. Thankfully Hubby didn’t freak out too bad (and it was in our budget) Luna will be here Monday. Only thing is, I ordered the small. I normally wear a woman’s 7 so I’m not sure if it’s going to fit. After binge watching Courtney Mermaid I’m looking to try my hand at making my own tail. God help me. [emoji38]Haha well then, merry Christmas! Enjoy your monofin! I believe with your foot size, the size you purchased should fit alright. If not, you can always email finis about a return [emoji3448]

so I send an email if they were going to release a large luna or in multiple colours, and they said they are currently not planning on doing so... :/
they will take it into consideration when they'll review their product lines again tho.
