Hi! Soren here, with an important question!

How do all you 'landlocked' merfolk deal with being kept away from the sea? Personally, I don't have a pool. I have friends with pools, but I'm way too shy to let them know I'm a merboy. Despite living in L.A, my family never goes to the beach, and I can't drive yet (oops). Even then, I'm a little too intimidated to swim with a tail in the ocean.

But beyond that, what are some of the little, everyday things you all do to feel more mer? I wanna fit into that role of the alluring, beautiful merboy, but I just feel like I'm too bland and boring... What can I do to be more my mer-self?

Hi Soren. I'm also new here from a couple week ago. There are at least 2 other SoCal mers on this boards so you are never too far from another mer. Just simply be yourself. In time you will open up and before you know it, you'll be swimming at the beach or your friends pool. Don't let your shyness stop you. If you're worry what they may say, I would recommend them to slowly open them to the idea. An example would be saying that you had a dream you were a merboy. Let them know you dreamt that again a couple night later. It may not be a direct way to your friend of saying "hey, I'm a merboy." It does however open them to the idea as recurring dreams means it on your mind. You shyness can remain in comfort knowing you didn't officially say it yet but it gives you time to eventually let them know. Welcome to Mernetwork.

Hi Soren!! Welcome to the MerNetwork! I've started feeling this way myself, so I started doing what most Merfolk do and I began collecting things. I'm redecorating my bedroom to fit a more sea-like theme, buying pieces of jewelry that remind me of the ocean and even dyed my hair a new color! I feel like living like a mer has made it more fun to get through the cold winter in New York City and made me a little less bummed out about not being able to go swimming anytime soon.

As for telling friends and family about my hobby, they all found it extremely interesting. When I finally made my first tail and swam in it, they were all so impressed and thought it was really cool too! Don't be shy about what you really love!

I also am a landlocked Mer, except I am 7 hours from the closest beach, so I am more of a freshwater Mer, but I do have a easy accessible pool in the summer months. During the winter months I just think of mermaids and look through the threads as I am right now.

I am sure your friends will be accepting. When I first swam in a tail my friends were a little hesitant to understand, but now they have accepted it.

I used to be really shy about it, but now it's grown to be a part of me that I am not so shy about.

Here's a landlocked mermaid too! I live an hour from the closest beach, but like Izzy I'm a little freshwater too. If you can go to pools, rivers or lakes, there are wonderful places to go too!

And like Machalee, I started collectin mer-related items. I wear an amonnite fossile as a pendant, and I started to wear that cute scale leggings.

Thanks, everyone! This is good advice. I think I'd be a bit more confident if I had a better tail, so when I have the time I think I'll get that started. Fun project for this summer! (along with a lot more beach trips.)

As for the 'feeling mer on land' bit, I've got some fun ideas. I love glitter-based makeup, I'm working up the courage to start experimenting with dyeing my hair.

But I'm also thinking about shell jewelry? Maybe bracelets or a little circlet-crown thing? Does anyone have anything like that?

Great idea! I hot glued a pair of small shells to earring backs and that is a great way to subtly express my love for the ocean.
Also, pearls. I don't mean strings of perfectly white, uniform pearls; I think that discolored, oddly-shaped pearls are gorgeous and look very mer-like. (Plus, they're a million times more affordable.)
Those are just a few of my favorites.

I was thinking that we don't see enough small necklace. I understand it may get in the way while swimming but on land sitting around it would make it more magical.

Hey dude! I'm a merman too. Alright, so in my opinion... there is no real "Mer-version" of yourself. ... you will always be a Merman. On land or in water, if you feel like a merman even on land then you are a Merfolk my friend. I know how you feel though... I swim for like 1 month of the year. It's so sad and it is very hard for me to deal with. Yet, I deal with it by distracting myself with real-life responsibilities and general fun. Know what truly makes me a Merman? When I'm in the water, submerged and just laying at the bottom of the pool or floating in the middle of a lake... there's nothing that feels more natural or at home to me. I feel almost 100%. Even sitting beside the water makes me feel more at home. Who you are on land is who you are as a Merman, but without that connection and satisfactory feeling of being within the water you are a normal land boy~

No problem! A lot of people who I guess, perhaps haven't awoken as a Merfolk or just possibly want to be Merfolk but aren't.... don't truly understand that there's no way to prepare a whole separate persona of who you would be as a Merfolk. You feel it in your gut and you carry it with you for life. I honestly want a tail SO BAD but, I am pretty poor. lOl. Perhaps when I get older and have a decent job... but to be honest it's not important to me. Having a tail doesn't make you Merfolk. lOl. It's your connection with the water/ocean and most of the time if you are Merfolk you are a natural swimmer anyways.

Beautifully said. I always wanted to explain how I felt about being a mermaid, but was never able to put it into words! Thank you!!

I'm from Wisconsin! I can find lakes easily , but the whole winter thing throws a lurch into being a mermaid! I don't have an indoor pool and that I could swim in, but I happen to work at an aquarium and that really makes me feel connected to the sea even though I'm nowhere near it and I'm freezing my tail off! I suggest findin an oceany place to hang out

I'm landlocked here as well, only able to make it towards a pool only a couple times a year. A friend of mine has a family that has a couple houses with pools at each of them, but I only seem to be at each house once a year. They know I do have a mertail and expect me to have it with me everytime I do go swimming. I get a couple other opportunities to swim at a couple hotel pools I stay at during the year... beyond that, I'm just swimming on my couch... lol

My 6 yr old niece has taken to donning my orange Magictail and Mirage monofin in the bathtub. Perhaps you could too.
