Hi Mermaids! Do you use your mersona as your main business brand? Do you prefer to use branding specific to your local area? Do you have some other branding strategy? What influenced your branding direction?
I'm debating wether to continue using "Hamptons Mermaid" as my brand or to switch to my new Mersona name "Mermaid Soluna" for my business. I didn't have my mersona name "Soluna" until this fall (it was my "playa name" gifted to me by my boyfriend at this year's Burning Man!).
About the Business
-So far my business has been based around selling my handmade accessories through Etsy (if you were at Mermania you probably saw my vendor's booth!)
-I just became an importer for Magictails.
-This summer I will start offering mermaid performances at events and parties for children.
-I'm currently titled Miss Mermaid USA / Miss Mermaid International 2nd Runner Up
About the Hamptons...
When I found that Hamptons Mermaid was available I jumped on the name because there are obvious benefits to being THE local mermaid. There are no established pro local mermaids here. "The Hamptons" is known as a rich resort town for NYC's upper class from Memorial Day to Labor Day. People throw ELABORATE parties here, especially for children (a 2 year old's party will have caterers, bouncy castles, pony rides, petting zoo, clowns, facepainting...everything and anything to outdo the other parents haha), so there's a ton of potential to make money as a mermaid here and I'm starting to train a pro pod so the business can always accept bookings (I perform in a band in the summers so I'll likely have shows when people want mermaids too).
However there are some disadvantages to using local branding... Not everyone knows what/where "the Hamptons" are. Some people who do know of the Hamptons (from TV shows), assume you're all hoity toity and live in a mansion. And I spend a lot of my winters traveling abroad or in Hawaii with the band, where Hamptons branding wouldn't make as much sense (Master plan is to move to Hawaii during the winters and live bi-coastal). My work with Miss Mermaid also brings a more national and international aspect to what I do.
It seems the general trend in the pro Mermaid World is to use your mersona name as your brand, which tempts me to change the brand to Mermaid Soluna. But I do want my brand to be something other mermaids feel like they can be a part of. To me, naming it after myself is not as inspiring for a team...though Kariel's pod performs under "Team Kariel" so it can be done. Or should I just keep my mersona more like stage name?
If anyone has thoughts on pros/cons of the different branding strategies I'd love some insight/advice!
*I own hamptonsmermaid.com, @hamptonsmermaid on Insta & Twitter and mermaidsoluna.com (@mermaidsoluna Insta & twitter are also available). I still need to set up a facebook page (other than the Miss Mermaid USA page I run).
Attached is my current logo ;) I do logo design and web design if anyone needs help!
