I feel like it's kinda childish to ask for help on this but I need advice and there is no one I can really talk to without either party in this getting judged.
I'm a starting mermaid, swam around in a fabric tail for a while and I'm working on making a sequin/neoprene/ silicone tail. I would really love to like, start doing mermaiding professionally (or atleast try to) to make some more money with my passion.
Now I have one problem... this is gonna sound really stupid, but my boyfriend feels very awkward when I do "weird" stuff like that. He is autistic and can't really handle that type of thing. I kind of understand him but I also just don't know how to handle it because for him swimming in a public pool is already near the limit so to say. Anyone has any advice on dealing with stuff like this? I'm sorry for asking, I just really don't know where to turn anymore ^^"
Robynn, what you are asking isn't childish at all. I'm glad you're asking in here as MerNetwork is a judge free zone for the most part. :) Being a 36 year old merman, I know where you are coming from. I understand he is Autistic but I'm still having problems with this part "because for him swimming in a public pool is already near the limit so to say." My brothers have aspergers and they are accepting of me swimming with a mer tail. I hated myself that I let my fear of water stop me from the remaining bucket list items. I'm so glad I got pass that fear. With past experience I had earlier in life, I'm not letting anything stop me from doing what I'm passionate about. You are going to have "what if" if you let something you truly love pass. Him making a limit put up a wall. The question you need to ask is do you stay stay inside or do you see where your passion takes you on the other side. I personally would follow my passion but remember that it's your choice. Also consider that the fact I dumped an ex g/f because she made me decide between her and the cats. I choose my cats :D

Really I am so glad this forum exists with people like you ^^" yeah I'm trying to meet in the middle like, instead of being a professional mermaid tweak my tailmaking skills and get a job in that so I'm still somewhat in the community. I'm a bit unsure about what to do still but it's atleast good to know that here is a safe space for me ^-^

If I can, I'd like to give some advice. :)
It's not a childish question at all, like Slim said. But, if you think this guy will limit your dreams, I don't think that's a good relationship to be in.
If you truly think mermaiding professionally is your calling, don't let anyone stand in your way!
I don't see why you can't go to the pool on your own and practice there! Or if there are any mers in your area, I'm sure they'd love to go with you and help you master swimming in a tail or working professionally. :)
You can always do basic birthday gigs and that will get you a bit of extra money, for sure!
Regardless of what I've said, you do what feels right to you and things will work out for you <3 !
Feel free to talk to me if you need any help or advice with anything. Or just ask the whole community!
We're all here for our fellow mers! <3

You all are so sweet! The thought that maybe this relationship might or might not be the right place already crossed my mind tbh, but he is very supportive when it comes to almost everything else. He just has a hard time adapting to my "weirder" obsessions xd I'm still gonna go on with creating my dream tail, no one can stop me from that. Life is just a big mess atm and I really needed some advice. Really thank you for your advices and for being so kind and sorry my replies are so awkward ^^"
Thanks. Your replies aren't awkward. Some stuff is hard to figure out and it's not always picture perfect. Even if you need advice outside of mermaiding, send a PM. I'm always willing to talk. Work is so slow anyway that I can almost talk at any given time. Be strong and I know you'll do what right.
