I've noticed that a large portion of the mermaiding community goes by "Mermaid somename" or "Merman somename." Is this an actual thing, or are some of y'all just so used to using it as usernames on non-mer sites that you went with it here too? I'm wondering if I ought to try changing my mersona name.

Its helpful for promotion for businesses if my business card just said "Wisty" It would be less obvious that I'm a mermaid, so I would print "Wisty The Mermaid" Which I also sometimes shorten to Mermaid Wisty. I don't love the Mermaid ____ format, but its just kinda familiar in the community so I use it out of convenience. No need to change your name, unless you want to!

Not saying mermaid or merman does add a nice kind of mystery. Even though I'm a guy, I feel people are more open to me when I remain gender neutral on the internet which is why I don't even say merman here. When I start the merman business soon, I plan to keep it gender neutral as Slim of the Lakeland merfolk.

Awesome! Thank you both for clearing it up a little for me. :)

Yeah, it's definitely not required that you use "Mermaid/man _____ " at all. :)
I, personally, hate that format as it is like saying "Human _____ ", y'know? Personally, I love titles, such as mine which is "Rebela the Lakeland Mermaid" ! It gives it a nice, pleasant, easy to remember title instead of stating what the person or object is. I don't mind someone saying "Hey, it's Mermaid Rebela!" because they're just trying to let people know it's something to be excited about in that moment, but my full title is definitely something that I want to be different than the simplistic "Mermaid ____" title.

I hope that helps! :D

Oooh, I love the idea of a title, especially since there are mers for different types of water/different aesthetics. Something to play around with, especially if I choose to try and go professional in the future.

Misty Lau

I personally don't even go by anything Mermaid. That may change if I ever turn it into a business, but I'm just Misty. Lau is the last name. I find it odd that so many people don't have full names for their mersona. Especially when mers usually have a relatively small pool to choose from. Why don't we mers use the same naming system as humans? We speak similar languages, don't we?

Maybe it's because Mermaid Melissa is so popular, or it's easier for regular old humans to accept a similar name for everything that falls under this "unique" category.

For clarification to the humies, I may refer to myself as what I am. Misty Lau, a Lionfish Siren.
(Ah that Rocket Raccoon reference.)

I find it odd that so many people don't have full names for their mersona. Especially when mers usually have a relatively small pool to choose from.

Since there are a handful of other Merman Dans out there, I thought of adding a second "n"... Merman Dan. Oh, did I mention the second "n" was both silent and invisible? ;)

I alternately go by:
"The merman with a farmer's tan"
"Guardian of Gate City, Defender of Diamond Shoals, Protector of the Pamlico, and Imperator of the Atlantic"
"Hey, you"

Mermaid Jaffa

I'm just Jaffa. Even though my "official" name is, Mermaid Jaffa.

When people ask my name at the pool, I just say, Jaffa.

Mermaid Lanier

I ended up deciding to change from Meerihua for goin' pro purposes. (And my sister hated the name Meerihua. xD So I decided to go with a generations-old family name instead.)

I think I'll do the same as y'all did, however, and keep it to just Lanier when introducing myself in real life. I'd hate to give off an "Aragorn, Son of Arathorn" vibe.

And Hey, You! I love that list of names. xD

I just discovered the mermaid community this January 2017. Of course there is already a mermaid Ginger (which is actually my real name) so chose to use the moniker Aquamtc (pronounced aquamatic) which in the beginning was the name of my swimming business and then it became the license plate on my car, email etc.
