Making my profile

I am new on this website and have no clue what I'm doing, I can't even change my gender in my profile. Can someone please explain how to change my profile? I also heard you can make a Avatar?

On any page, you should be able to click "Settings".
On the left side in the third column down, it should have links to change your username, profile image, avatar, etc.!
