View Full Version : Deciding on a Fabric Tail for Casual Gigs

So it's finally time that my silicone mermaid tail will now be starting production this week and honestly I can't be more excited for it. That being said, I've been looking into getting a fabric mermaid tail for casual meet-ups and just small little gigs until the silicone one gets here. But I thought I'd bring the question here to kind of look for an opinion. I've been really debating on color schemes but I narrowed it down to about four that'll definitely work for my mermaid persona's colors.

So these are the tails I have narrowed it down to. I plan on adding my own embellishments on them though once I decide.

The first two are from Ebay at $54 (based on the Stephen Chow Mermaid movie released last year) and I overall love the aesthetic look to them because the scaling and the fluke are so unique. The blue would match my persona better but I really like the green one as well. It's more on the line of an Ariel-ish green (which is fine with me because I cosplay and plan on doing Ariel type stuff eventually.) Plus they come with a mono fin insert.

The third is the Maui-Splash from Fin-Fun (I know, big surprise) at $64 I'm mostly just looking to get the skin for fin fun and then modifying the fluke to fit my massive Mahina merfin. It's a limited edition color scheme so it's probably the most expensive out of the bunch that I found. But that blue to pink ombre scheme would look really nice with my abalone top.

And finally the last tail is the Aurora Borealis tail from Suntail Mermaid at $49. I have a friend in my Pod who ordered from Sun Tails before for her first fabric tail so I ended up looking into it. This one is mostly just for the skin by itself to modify over my Mahina Merfin but I was surprised at how cheap it was. It fits more into my budget and I would love to try and customize it with some extra finance and bits an it matches my abalone top perfectly but I'm worried it may not clash with the auburn styled hair.

But now raises the question, which one should I go with? D:

I honestly adore the first one the most, although I'm a lot less trusting of Ebay than certain family members of mine. (My dad buys so many watches from there. 0-0) My second choice would be your third option, but that first one is definitely my favorite.

I get a lot of my cosplay fabric and supplies from Ebay and they've never steered me wrong thus far. I trust them with my life. But at the same time, it is a swimmable tail and I know that there is a bit of a sizing risk when ordering from China D:

Well, the second two are from known brands, but the flukes on 1/2 might be worth the gamble! And you could order big if you know how to sew! That way you don't run the risk of too small. Tails are pretty easy to take in. I would be worried about the fin in the first two though. Are there pics of whats inside? It looks to me suspiciously like a sheet of flexible foam... *squint*

1 and 2, are poor quality tails from China.

I like Sun Tails best. The monofin is nice, easy to carry and does have propulsion.

I think it's a foam monofin if I remember correctly. But if I do end up getting one of the first two I was going to reshape the fluke to fit my Mahina Merfin. I've been sewing for years so I thought it would be nice to at least add my own touches to it. :)
