Hey mers, so recently I've been wanting to experiment with silicone (I've never tried it before) by transforming my old fabric tail by adding layered sequins for scales and a silicone fluke, but one problem; I'm basically broke. So I thought "hey! Aquarium silicone won't be bad!" But not I'm being told other wise. Can i make the tail without a mold? Like just adding on to a previous fin? (It's a magictail fim) help!

Do not put silicone on a magic tail fin, it will be too heavy and break.
You will need a more sturdy monofin like a finis foil or wave and need about 6-8 tubes of silicone to cover it properly.
you can spread a layer of silicone over the fluke and then use tools to put lines etc in the silicone before it dries, basically like icing a cake. It's very messy so you will need gloves and also you need to wear a mask to protect from the fumes.

Just out of curiosity what type of mask? I recall seeing somewhere a person wearing one of those fabric white masks while making an aquarium silicone tail. I was wondering if that wasn't enough protection?

I think it would be best to wear a respirator or at least work outside in an open space. The fumes on that stuff can be yikes-ish. ( especially in that quantity.)

A basic cartridge respirator from your local hardware store should be sufficient. The little paper ones aren't. They're for large dust particles only. The cartridge respirators filter the fumes so that you're not breathing in the chemicals.
