Hey all!
I'm looking to start designing a new tail for myself, to be bought in the relatively distant future (And hopefully, fingers-crossed, from Finfolk). I'm in the process of losing about 50lbs, and I'm 30lbs in. I thought perhaps getting the process started would help with motivating through the last 20lbs!
The only problem? I am très artisitically challenged 😂
So I was hoping to get some help. Is there any place that will help design for free? Or perhaps a program or template that makes it a little easier?

You can always print out one of the finfolk templates and color it in, and theres dollmakers too! this one site..... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shoot. i will look for it..... AH! Danielheffley.com/tailmaker
so if you do a combination of those things, get a feel for what you like, itll be easier to come up with a solid design!

I'd also like to point out how awesome it is to base your tail off of a real life fish. That way, it makes you even MORE realistic as a mermaid. There are thousands of fish out in nature to draw inspiration from. Maybe you could even be a "cross breed"!
I drew a tail for one of my friends, and it's a cross between a Lionfish and a white spotted Plecostomus. A cross between freshwater and saltwater! I personally love it. It wasn't my idea, that's why I can say I love it lol.
I'm a purebred Red Lionfish. I haven't made my tail yet, but I'm excited to do so in the relatively distance future. XD
In my mind, if I can't tell what fish breed a mer is, they're just a mixbreed of fish. So while that doesn't happen to fish, I think it happens with mers. XD
I'll give a list of the names of fish that I really think would make beautiful tails.

I'd suggest looking at the fish on LiveAquaria, an online store for fish enthusiasts. They've got TONS of fish available, and they're a great source to look at when deciding what kind of tail you'd like.
If you're going for a black and white or grayish tail, I'd suggest looking at the different spices of Freshwater Corydora fish. Guppies, Betas, and Discus fish, freshwater, provide a lot of color and pattern variety. Different groups of fish also offer a lot of variety within their group. Gourami, Tetras, and Loaches also offer an interesting assortment of Freshwater choices.
Some of my favorite saltwater fish are Red Lionfish (obv, that's what I am), Kaudern's Cardinalfish, Zebra Sharks, Spotted Sweetlips, Chalk Bass, Harlequin Bass, Tabacco Basslet, Orange Stripe Prawn Goby, Mimic Half Black Tang, Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse, Pearly Wrasse, and Tanaka's Pygmy Wrasse.
Some of my Freshwater favorites are Chain Loaches, Zebra Otocinclus, Regular Otocinclus, Black neon Tetra, Betas, Cardinal Tetra, Sparkling Gourami, Dwarf Gourami, and Harleiquin Rasboras.

I just checked out the Danielheffley.com/tailmaker site and I love it. I had my tail designed in about 3 minutes. Just one question though: Is there any way to save the model so that I don't have to keep the tab open? :(

I dont think so. It was made by a member and its not complete i dont think. You can screenshot it and share though ;)

....
'facepalms'
Okay, I'll go do that. :p
I can see why it would take a while though, I'm doing an online 3D modeling course online and it takes FOREVER to get a good-looking model on there, let alone a whole custom tail-designing program.
