I went mermaiding earlier and I notice my tan got more darker. The thing is now I got a good tan going everywhere on me. My face, chest, back, and even the arms. However my legs are still as pale as can be. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but how does everyone explains their mermaid tan when they aren't in their tail. I'm currently wearing pants to cover up my legs but I know that isn't solving the problem. Part of me is just tempted to lay my bottom half in the sun while the top half of me is in the shade. I'm still proud of my mermaid tan as it always leads to an interesting discussion when a guy like me is trying to explain the mermaid tan. Even though I could be calling this the merman tan, the conversation are the best with strangers when I call it the mermaid tan as it allows me to explain mermaiding to them.

My arm is on the left and is the tan color the rest of me except my legs are which is on the right. I'm still proud of my earned mermaid tan :)

I turn into a lobster unless I bathe in sunscreen. I got a severe sunburn last summer (not mermaiding) and turned beet red. It took almost a month to turn into a tan.

I'm a real lobster too... Sun makes me burn as a chicken on a rotisserie!!

I didn't even think about a mer-tan! I tan pretty easily, and burning is rarely an issue. (I think I get more damage from sitting in front of a computer all day, to be honest. xD) But strange tan-lines will be important to keep in mind, especially since I'm already mostly leg. At 5'11", that's usually the part of me people are staring at.

I had a sunburn that scarred for two years when I was younger. Not fun. Lately I've been covering up my shoulders/back more since that's the worst where it burns. I tend to always wear shorts so my legs are actually the tannest part of me.

The only exception was from last summer where I went snorkeling a bunch and got one of those cheeky butt tans from my wetsuit. My legs were three toned after that (from normal shorts, swim bottoms, then that cheeky wetsuit). I still have that tan too now that I think about it...

I would just say your legs are new and just not used to sun if someone really asks about it. :)

I've had similar experiences; throughout last summer I earned a t shirt and shorts tan after working at sea in the Med along with an even paler swimsuit tan

I am incredibly pale and incapable of tanning... So this will never be an issue for me, haha. Skin cancer has been a reoccurring issue with my family as well, so I always bathe in sunscreen before swimming anyway.

I tan so easily. I spend 5 minutes out in the sun, I go super dark.

I think it would just look like you were doing yard work as generally people wear long pants when doing yard work.

In the summer I like to drive with the window down and my left arm hanging out the window. Thus I end up with one arm being darker than the other. Then for some reason my face never tans so I have tan arms and a pale face. When my friend became a Mary Kay seller she hosted a makeup party thingy and when she was picking what foundation to give me the other Mary Kay seller corrected her and told her, "No you are looking at her arms but look at her face it is lighter." Lol

I don't know about you, but here the UV rating is high and sun protection just cannot be stressed enough. Tanning is skin cells in trauma. It ages you terribly and can cause cancer. Sunscreen doesn't cut it for me anymore. Get yourself a 50+spf zinc. It stays on for hours in the water and should help with the marked colour difference. I don't leave the house without at least a daily spf 30+ on, but for any physical activity, ZINC!

After the first major sunburn; I use the spray spf 100 sunblock as Florida sun is bad. I didn't hear of Zinc before in sunblock but I'm guessing it's powerful stuff. I look 10 to 15 years younger than what I actually am so it may not hurt if I start looking my age :) The UV in the summer here are usually about 7 and 8. Thank you for the tip.

Oh that's not too bad! Sometimes here, it's 11. Man. I wish I could get spf 100! I've only ever seen as high as 50 here.

Also, as to not looking your age, way to rub it in 😛

I've seen SPF 80 here in Sydney. That was awhile back. I think it was the Cancer Council brand, had it in limited range and then they stopped making it.

I am really pale and freckled. I just burn, get more freckles, then turn pale again. There is no tan for me.

I use SPF 100+ because I am super white and get burnt quick. Also, I constanlly have the top of my body tan, while my legs are pastie white. #MermaidLifeProblems lol

Hey Slim! I'm naturally quite pale but don't burn, the worst I've had was a one day burn that turned into a nice bronze a day or so later. The thing is when I tan it takes forever to go away. Personally I like being pale and try to avoid getting tan, my personal aesthetics. I like that you use your half paleness to spread awareness about mermaiding! That's really awesome! If you want to tan go for it (safely of course)!

For all those that burn like nobody's business, or who just want to avoid getting a tan; instead of sunscreen if it's available to you use sunblock, google the difference if you like. And Zinc, I've never heard of that; I'll have to look into it.

Thank you. I'm still using the tan to own it :D The rain in the afternoon here in Florida is making it hard to keep the tan. I'm already wanting to go mermaiding again.

I tan far too easily, so I try to manage it by spending some time in the sun to try and even it out. Seems like the easiest solution, but otherwise pants will work wonders. My only notable complaint is that my skin tone won't match the flesh tone fade I put on the tail because of the tan. I think maybe a diligent application of suntan lotion would probably be the only real way of combating this problem.

Luckily, I tan pretty easily too so a couple swims in human form keeps everything pretty even. It's shorts weather down here pretty much 12 months a year so preet easy to keep a tan on the legs. You know you can always spray tan or use a self tanner in the areas you need more color.

I honestly never considered that being tannable would ever be a problem. LOL. Nobody wants to see dead pale freckled white fat. LOL
