Fabric, silicone, latex, or other materials. I don't care! I have a couple tail designs in mind, but always get stuck at the fluke. If my fellow mers would oblige me with photos/drawings of your flukes (and perhaps the company and name of the fluke if you can?) I would be eternally grateful! Please inspire me!

I normally shape my flukes to the monofin that I'll be using. For example, my Finis Foil tails, have a smaller fluke size with flowing fin tips. In my merfin and mirage tails, I just made the fluke according to the shape of the monofin, with some flowing bits not not too over the top, as I know how much fabric I am able to swim in.

Ah, that makes sense! I'm considering a FinFun monofin, the new improved one with the blue parts on it, since it'll be my first. Would it be unwise to add trailing tips since I've never worn a tail and am not yet a very strong swimmer...?

I found out for myself through trial and error. I slowly added fins and extra flowing bits per tail.
For example, for Tail 3, I added a loose fitted fluke of the monofin. Took it for a few swims. Decided it was ok, then extended it. For the next tail, first added dorsal fin + the flowing fluke. Then next one, dorsal fin running all the way down on tail and on swimsuit, and longer fluke. And next one, all of the latter + pectoral fins. And so on and on...
Doing it this way, you can decide for yourself, exactly how much fabric you can swim in. The stronger you get, the more things you can add on. Well that's the way I figured it.

Just going to post a pic of my future tail because it shows the fluke and fins. However, it IS kinda seethrough and I plan on making it without a monofin, but if you didn't want the membrane parts seethrough I think you'd be good to go.
As always, if someone uses my art or design without my permission, I'll be unhappy. XD
Misty that looks great but why not have the power and push of a monofin? I'm really curious about this.

Oh that's a great idea, thanks for all the info! I'm really only planning on having one or two tails, do you think it would affect the quality of the tail to: First make it simple, no bells and whistles, just the tail; swim in it until I'm confident; then slowly start to add thinks like a bigger fluke/better monofin, decorative fins, etc...? Like, over time?

I would not be sacrificing the advantages of a monofin... I'd figure out how to have someone custom make me the "ribs" of the fluke, and combine that with foot pockets as if it were a monofin. Then I'd just have silicone "draped" between and... I'm thinking it would work as well as any other tail with a monofin in it. However, that was before I knew that monofins could come clear. XD Or maybe I could make a clear monofin or commission one... instead of all the complicated stuff I was thinking of doing.
So I'll maybe do it instead with a clear monofin... just super worried about it showing. It'd definitely be cheaper to do it that way I think.
(And no, I'm sure I'm a lionfish, not a stonefish. That was actually really funny to me though- thank you for the laugh!)
I can't wait to see the finish work once you get that going. Your way of handing the monofin is something I would had never even think of.

Thanks for sharing! You are a lovely mer ^_^
Your previous post, aside from the Mahina which can double as a fluke, those aren't exactly what I had in mind, those are monofins, right? Am I getting the terminology wrong or isn't there a difference? The fluke is like the actual end of the tail, and the monofin is the swim aid that usually goes inside the fluke to give propulsion and stability. That's what my impression was?

Ok heres the janky gorilla tape method rundown!
First I made a paper template of my fluke shape. I temporarily taped it to the monofin.
Then i glued the thick industrial zip ties to the monofin, radiating out almost like bones. I trimmed them to line up with the edges of my paper pattern, then removed the paper. Now i had a monofin with a zip tie skeleton attached to the end (The glue didn't stick but it doesn't matter in the long run.)
I took long strips of gorilla tape and covered the "bones" while being careful not to get it stuck to my table. Then i flipped the fin over and covered that side in tape, sticky parts of the tape together. It creates a sandwich tape, bones, tape. Then i trimmed it to shape.
uhhhh heres a picture. Yellow is monofin, blue is ziptie bones, grey is gorilla tape strips, black is where I trimmed.
40620
I did a few layers of tape and wrapped all the edges with tape too, but this is the basic idea.
I hope this helps!
(edit: Then I put it in a fabric tail, ofc)

Indeed, I do that, and I also use so I can go swimming with only my fluke. It will always put some strain on the silicone, even if you glue it down there will be some. But you need to use enough snaps to devide it. I've been swimming regularly in this tail for almost a year with no signs of that this method would bring to much tension

I personally wouldn't have a fluke without a monofin but if your just going for translucency I'd recommend that you make your self a monofin with lexan / polycarbonate sheet, it is translucent and it will not brake under the pressure of swimming many Mers have tried it and it works like a charm PearlyMae makes her tails or monofins with this material and I've seen a video of her from under and her fluke was slightly translucent bet it's because of the colors she used with your colors it would deff be translucent but not see through because silicone gets cloudy with thickness. Your fluke and mine are alike! [emoji7]
Now here's my fluke I'm still sculpting it so it's not at it's full gory!

Here's a couple of mine, both based on butterfly wings:
The comma fluke:
(Colouring based on the Alpine Black Swallowtail butterfly)

And the peacock fluke:
(Based on the Peacock butterfly, but also very similar to the small tortoiseshell, which I used for the colouring)

Lilija & Slim ~ thanks!
I just loved the shape of the Comma's hindwings.

I did that fluke to fit over a finis foil, so it's small, agile and floppy:

The Peacock fluke is huge in comparison, and just fits over my fibreglass fin. It's not so floppy or agile, but it gives amazing propulsion and looks a lot more graceful:

A concept of mine. v.v; Hopefully the image isn't too large, if so I can just put it as a link. The backside's pattern may be redone though, and the orbs at each end of the fins, fluke 'n dorsal are meant to glow.
Everyone's is so pretty, and I love seeing them.

Wow you guys, thank you for all your photos and comments! Your tails and flukes are all so unique and beautiful ^_^ You've given me quite a lot to think about. In a good way!
I do apologize for my lengthy absence. My grandma got sick and they thought this might be it, so I flew home for a week to see her one last time. Thankfully she decided to hang on, but it was very touch-and-go for a while there! Then once I got back I had completely forgotten I made this thread. Thanks for keeping it alive!

So many cool flukes!! Hopefully you find something inspiring from them MeliPixie :)
I also extended my Finnis Wave monofin using zip ties/duct tape--it's held up for 5 years now with minimal adjustments. I'm making another one with this same method soon, but a more dramatic/sculpted shape. I have photos of the process here (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2548-First-time-tailmaking-Jade-s-attempt).
And pics of my tail... which I can't seem to upload here, they keep failing. Hmm :/
Pictures can't be bigger than 1,500 pixel tall and wide I found out with the computer. I have shrink my phone pictures every time to post them on here.

I'm doing a similar layered fluke style for my tail! I'm making one out of FlexSeal and I thought a layered design would give me more thrust and a nice aesthetic <3
Show me the entire thing when it's done !!! I am in love, Mazu !!!!!!

That's very interesting, and I'd love to know how it turns out, but not what I meant. I mean can it be heated in a Kiln or oven to make it solid like ceramic.

I think she might mean like baked? I think? Like kiln baked? I dont think you can with oil based though since its not suppose to dry but Ive also never heard of anyone try it

Yes that is what I meant, my post is above :) I had wondered perhaps if it is meant not to dry until it is baked or something. Like a chemical reaction at kiln temperatures or something.

Ohhhh I saw now! But no, this clay is not meant to get hard and solid it basically just holds its shape until you make a mold but doesn't get like ceramic

XD

O no Honey if you put oil based clay in the oven or any type of heating it will simply melt into a liquid form and as it cools it becomes more solid i believe there are specific clays for that
