View Full Version : Family isn't supportive of mermaiding?

I'm 13 years old, and I'm having some issues with my family supporting me to buy a tail. My grandfather (now deceased) gave me a tube full of coins that equal up to 1,000 dollars to save up to whatever I need or want. My mother (the daughter of my grandfather) said that he wouldnt want me to spend it on "some tail", he would want it for savings, but I have a feeling that he would want me to do it, if it made me happy. (not trying to sound selfish lol) When i discuss it with my family all they do is laugh or smirk and say "We'll see." I need advice.

If I was in your position, I would "kinda" give them what they want with the saving thing. There a lot to consider in picking and finding the right tail unless you make it yourself. You can let them know you are currently saving it on your own but don't tell them so much that your saving the money until you find the right tail. You can slowly expand their mind and let gradually see the mer community as time goes by. You are still young and you are still growing so saving that money for an expensive silicone tail may be a good idea until you stop growing. A nice fairly cheap fabric tail would be the best way to go until you know you are no longer growing. That my personal opinion.

I completely agree with Slim. Get a decent fabric tail if you need to quench your mermaid thirst until you can get a fancy silicone one.

I'm 15, and I plan on saving for my tail (a budget of $5000 to $7000 USD) for a while, since I'm not sure I'm done growing, I'm definitely waiting until I'm at LEAST 18, but probably more like 20. There's no way I'm waiting past 25 though. I plan on setting aside a small amount of my paycheck to fund my mermaiding endeavors, as well as the other hobbies I have. (All of which seem to be expensive lol. Kinda frustrating but oh well. XD)

In regards to your family not wanting you to spend money like that on a tail? Well, if you wait until 18-20 years old, and you're out of the house, living on your own paychecks, they can't exactly forbid you from buying your dream tail. XD

You could always try making your own tail :) I'm 16 and I'm making my own silicone tail but its been coming along really slowly because the materials are so dang expensive in Australia :(

What they all said is correct. A fabric or neoprene tail is going to be the way to go. You still have quite a lot of growing to do and if you buy that expensive tail, you're going to grow out of it in just a few years. Plus, who knows what you'll think of mermaiding in a few years! I've been mermaid since I was eleven and I've seen so many people who loved being a mer more than anything end up dropping the hobby after a while. That nearly included myself!

So I'd say save your money. I don't think that your parents are completely against mermaiding, they just want what's best for you and hope that you'll make a meaningful decision :)

I hate to be one of those people sucking all the fun outta the room, but you probably outta save it. :/ College is expensive and while I know like it seems a long ways off, you are gonna need as much as you can save for it.

I'd like to second the "You are going to grow out of a silicone tail" point too. They are really expensive and you will want yours to last a few years at least. Get yourself a decent fabric tail to hold you over for a while. It'll be worth the wait :D

Yes! Please save it, even if college isn't in your future plans. I'm getting ready to go myself and $1,000 around would make me a lot more comfortable. But I DO recommend saving up additionally for a monofin or fabric tail, tell them that exercise is good for you. :P

I do own a Fin Fun tail already, but I've been viewing Finfolk Productions new mythic tails, could I save up for those or would it be the same as a silicone tail?

I'm going to have to agree that you will likely outgrow it if you get a tail now. I personally didn't stop growing until I was 24. We reach our likely maximum height by 18-20 years but many people continue to fill out in muscle, belly, breasts, and hips for several years after. Best to save it for now.

Hm... honestly, it's up to you with the Mythic Tails. Personally, since they are still close to $1000 USD, I'd wait until at least 18-20. Even though they are cheaper than full silicone, they are still extremely expensive for a tail you're going to grow out of!!! Personally I would save the money, or even look into investing it and making it work for me, for a full silicone tail.

Along the lines of saving for college- I'm forced to graduate high school at 17, just how the time and birthday rolled. I could even graduate at 16 if I wanted since I'd have all the credits. I'm going to start saving for college and my future the moment I get my first real job. Haven't had one of those yet. XD Anyway, there's plenty of time to get a part time or full time job and save for your future education and future independent and comfy live. That's the way I look at it, anyway.

As a mermaid mom who just got her first tail go ahead and and buy yourself a FinFun mono fin with the fabric tail. You can get one for under $130 and you'll have a lot of enjoyment. Tell your family you'll use it regularly and get good exercise and the rest of the money can be safer for something that they think is important like college.

She said above she already has one, which is why most of us have suggested she save the rest :)
