I don't know if this is the right place to put this post, but as I went for a jog today, I passed by spots where I thought merfolk would be right at home.
Does anyone else think such thoughts?
I thought it might be fun to share pics of such places!! So I took pics of two of the "perfect spots" and thought I'd post em.
Then see if others might wanna meet the "challenge."
takers?

I offer two...
One at the shore upon the rocks
and the second hiding among the mangroves...

Note the sand mermaid was a 'find' - I have no idea who made it.
If people want to see more photos the main gallery is here (http://www.roamingstudio.com/photos/main.php) - but I should warn you I have never really got around to sorting out the photos; they are random holiday ones which have never been post-processed or tidied up. Anyway back to the challenge.

Funny, I'd been talking with a friend yesterday about going on a "night swim in the glow-water" in my mermaid tail that I'm working on. (The article about bioluminescent water: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/03/pictures/120319-glowing-waves-ocean-blue-bioluminescent-plankton-science/) Super cool--I love bioluminescence! I'd love to be surrounded by it, & check out the stars. It looks magical.

9704 Of course, I then made a joke about having to avoid the glow-sharks: 9705 (Velvet Belly Lantern Shark, aka. the fascinating & gorgeously marked "invisible shark".) Aren't they awesome looking?

Myself, I would love to re-visit The Great Barrier Reef. I had a splash amongst the reef last time, but was wearing a swim vest and glasses... And I had to watch my nephew, also in swim vest.
My aunties and uncles were laying on the benches like beached whales cos the boat ride was very bumpy.

Augh, I don't have any pictures of it, but there's this one place my dad used to take me fishing all the time when I was a kid, called Beachy Cove here in Newfoundland (Here's a Google Maps (https://www.google.ca/maps/@47.6172742,-52.8696993,599m/data=!3m1!1e3) link). It's a teeny-tiny little sandy beach surrounded on three sides by a huge cliff, and in the back there's this big freshwater waterfall and a small pond/river that leads down into the ocean. It's an absolutely gorgeous spot during the summer and was my all-time favorite place to go when I was younger. I've always thought about how great a spot it would be for a mermaid to relax in! (Even though someone's after building a huge mansion on top of one of the cliffs, so it's not really a private little spot anymore, booo :c)

And then there's La Manche Provincial Park, which is right by the ocean (... well it's Newfoundland, so everything's by the ocean) where there's this one gorgeous spot along the East Coast Trail with a suspension bridge, and just in off the path near the bridge there's a big deep waterhole with a waterfall and a big rock to stretch out on... Another one of my all-time favorite spots. <3 Google Maps has some pictures of the bridge (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/La+Manche+Provincial+Park/@47.166328,-52.866265,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m5!1e2!3m3!1s81491529!2e1!3e10!4m2!3m1!1s0x 4b0ce53e7dcdb10b:0xfe93f620492039de), though none of the waterhole.

Once I get my tail I'm definitely going around the island and getting some photos in a few of the little coves around here. It's no fancy tropical paradise, but this place has some beautiful spots for mermaid sightings!

A few that I did find pictures of:

Salmon Cove

18981

Middle Cove

18982

Topsail Beach

18984

Gros Morne National Park (I could totally see whole pods of freshwater mers hanging out here!)

18990

And one of my favorite spots, Manuels River, which I lived pretty much next to for a big chunk of my life and loved swimming and fossil-hunting in:

18985 18986 18988

And then there's Outer Cove, Gallows Cove... A lot of coves... Thunder Falls, and so on...

... The more I think of it, the more I'm going to have to find time for some major road trips and photoshoots when I get my tail!

Here in my area we have the San Juan islands, where I really hope to do some photos this summer. The islands are especially famous for the orca pods. Many of the islands are sparsely inhabited and only accessible by boat or seaplane.

Around the south of Iran there's a lot of jungles like this. I always thought they'd be perfect for mermaids to hide in. I'm trying to figure a way to work it into my background story, especially since my audience is typically familiar with them (They're all over the region where Indo-Aryans inhabit, so they don't require much explanation whether I'm speaking hindi, urdu, or farsi/dari, we all know what they are, lol)

Savannah Staver, I am so jealous of you right now...

Exdraghunt, because of you, I just made plans to go to the San Juan islands this summer with my love bug. I've lived in Washington state for over 20 years but it's just passed me by and I haven't been able to (financially) or had the courage to go by myself. (I hate driving long distances, used to love it but not anymore)

These places all look so beautiful! I hope to be able to visit a few of them within my lifetime. In September I'm taking a road trip down to California with my boyfriend and dog. We have no idea where we're going except for 1 restaurant in California but I hope to stop by or find little magical places like the pictures I've seen on here to swim in :)

It was so much fun! Honestly the pictures don't do it justice, since they had to put it on flash because of it being dark out. When you get out of the water you look like a galaxy because you still glow, if only I had my tail at the time! By far the coolest experience I've ever had

It was so much fun! Honestly the pictures don't do it justice, since they had to put it on flash because of it being dark out. When you get out of the water you look like a galaxy because you still glow, if only I had my tail at the time! By far the coolest experience I've ever had

These photos are all so beautiful! I love the idea of finding perfect mermaid spots. I'm always on the lookout! My favorite spot that I think will be perfect for a mermaid this summer is Folly Cove in Rockport, Massachusetts. I scuba dive here but this summer will be my first with my tail! I love that this site feels really secluded but is open to the public.

They'd have to be a pretty tough mermaid to stay afloat in all the craziness of the water crashing, but I think Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe would be a pretty awesome place for a mermaid sighting. I can totally picture mermaids hanging out somewhere down below in a more mellow spot, maybe with some fairies for company :)

They are a natural protected park; there is a huge colony of marine birds that make their nests in the cliffs. The sand is white and so thin that you sink on it and it takes real effort to walk on it. The water is very clear, but freezing (about 10º C, 50 F). Very worth the visit!

Somebody's pool I found on Google... Private Grotto!

19952

Looking at something like this (or lovely swimmming ponds) is the only time I really regret not having money.

Natural places are wonderful, but not so practical for mermaiding if you don't live there (damn expensive, and in tropical or warm climates, also risky), it's too cold to swim in most of the time, currents, dangerous wildlife etc to be wary of and so on.

A naturally looking indoor (or maybe outdoor) private pool though, not too chilly, done up mermaidy looking...

I realize these aren't nearly as wonderful as most of the others here, but living where I do, we don't have the beautiful clear blue waters and etc. that are ideal for mermaid sightings. We do, however, have a few incredibly beautiful spots here in the Great Lakes (not all conducive to swimming because of water currents and water temp) though... and I just had to share. These were taken during my honeymoon back in 2006. We spent 2 wks waterfall hiking in Michigan's UP. We had to do a lot of strenuous hiking to access these locations, but it was SO worth it!

Mermaid Menanna
04-27-2015, 02:07 AM
LOL, they are beautiful RisingMermaid, but unfortunately those waterfalls are not good locations for swimming with or without a tail. As much as I wanted to swim each of them, it was very obvious that it was too dangerous with such heavy water currents. We walked the rivers for many of them, but when we neared the waterfall locations we had to go rock hopping or stick to the shoreline. More than once I was knocked over by the current in a foot of water, just trying to stand in it with aqua shoes on... it was that strong.
Here's a pic of me sitting on some rocks alongside one of the tiny falls. If you notice I only had my feet in the water and it was difficult to even do that and not get pulled in. 29291

Like wading depth. They range from about waist-deep to ankle deep. Most of the pools are pretty shallow. The "sacred pool" is pretty deep, but it's not in the actual cotton-walled pool area.

Another shipwreck location (oddly enough, very close to the last one) with some much older, wooden vessels deliberately beached as a breakwater. I actually couldn't find any photos of it at all, so obviously not many people go there, just the occasional kayaker or SUP'er.

Hmm, I did not know about red sand beach. I've been to black sand beach and green sand beach, and swam at both (in my pre-tail days). Green sand beach requires a 3 mile hike, or a good SUV, and a climb down a steep incline. Once I got into the water, people on top of the incline all stared at me like I was insane. I may have been. Its a narrow beach with rocks on each side, good size waves, and a along shore current that is so strong you have to swim against it almost non-stop to just stay in place.

I did not know about green sands beach. Sounds cool. This is red sands:
http://mernetwork.com/index/attachment.php?attachmentid=35402&stc=1

It has a hike to get to it, with a slippery drop off to certain death covered in pine needles for extra slippage. You basically have to hold on to partially exposed tree roots in some areas. I'm a rock climber and I got nervous, but it was worth it. The volcanic rocks create a little lagoon of nice, calm water, and on the other side are all the smashing waves. The sand was that pourous, pumice-feeling sharp volcano stuff, but the stones in the lagoon are smooth like river rocks. It's an amazing place.

Don't know if anyone is still following this thread but I have a few goal spots of my own when I get a tail: The champagne pools and Eli Creek Fraser Island, The Tangalooma wrecks Moreton Island, Kondalilla Falls QLD, and Stradbroke Island 😀https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170416/3f37e4f1df14d317e7dec1bf1b716c7b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170416/85193b86a95938697e2ac1176016c2fb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170416/6b5d17825c620a97eccc252546d8a684.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170416/7d5d76c57561b7c79ecd02797804d712.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170416/b69fcd0976847084a2a24ed47625b6f0.jpg

On Windows using paint, there a resize button beside rotate. Choose pixels and check "maintain aspect ratio".

The best tool for resizing images is ImageMagick. I prefer it as I can edit images in bulk and I like the simple interface.

For example (Linux; this will create a directory tmp in the current directory and (command 1) and the second command will resize all images in the current directory to a size where the longer side (landscape or portrait) is exactly 500 pixels):

mkdir tmp
for i in `ls *.JPG`; do name=$(echo $i | cut -d. -f1); convert $i -resize 500x500 tmp/$name.jpg; done
