Nim's 1st made to order full silicone tail - video series

Hi everyone!

As some of you might already know, I've accepted my first ever tailmaking comission. :yay: Very excited! And I figured I'd make some more videos about it, since I had so much fun with the last few.

I shot the first video today, but since youtube is taking it's sweet time with the upload :rolleyes:, here's a little teaser video about the first scale sample I made.

I used it for my molds, you just have to renforce it with wire mesh once it gets heavier or it will break.

Looks great so far! The website is awesome! Only two things about it: when you first go on the website and click the "become a mermaid" button to enter the site, it takes you to the contact page, which is the last link under the navigation bar. You might want to change that so that it opens to the 'Read Me' page.

Also, all of yhe website editing options (such as text size, banners, colors, templates, and all that) are visible on the Read Me tab ;)

I TOTALLY understand that you literally just put up the site and haven't worked out the kinks yet, but I thought I'd let you know :)

The one thing I might suggest is adding a short description of your product in the shop. What is included in a "basic tail"/are there customization options? Or maybe a little bit about what sort of process goes into creating your tails?

Beautiful website! I'm a web designer myself and can't really find much to critique. Maybe just add an "About me" type page that gives a little more personal insight into your mermaid story. You could also highlight the naturalistic style of your tails, as I think that's what makes you stand out from other fantasy style tailmakers. :)

@ HamptonsMermaid: Thank you for your feedback! I just added all of your suggestions to the webpage. And as for your question; I use a very transparent silicone and paint the inside And the outside of the tail, so I get a very realistic light-scattering effect like real fish scales have as well. The pigments are just the same as everyone elses.

@Vee: I'm sorry dear the June Slot is already taken. But, there's gonna be quite a few more opportunities for a discounted Tail :-) I attached a picture where you can see the zipper really well. To hide it I would put the two halfs of the dorsal fin on each side (alike the H20 tails) which you then can close over the zipper to make it invisible. Obviously the longer the dorsal the longer the zipper can be.

Hey Nim, I love your tails they are beautiful! You are doing an amazing job.
I just have a bit of a health concern for you. Iridescent colors are supper pretty and very reminiscent of fish scales but those same pigments are extremely hazardous to your health. Chemical gas masks need to be worn when mixing these pigments and if you are doing any airbrush work with them you need to wear it then too. These can cause major neurological disorders and brain cancer.
I use to be an airbrush artist for Windstone Editions and their paint mixer and I can tell you how important this is and that we've lost some great artists in the industry due to improper handling of materials.

I'm always wearing my airbrush breather mask when painting :). It's gas/spray proof so I think it should be safe enough?

But I'll make sure to be extra careful from now on!



PS Most of my pigments are usually used for cosmetics, are they such a big health hazard as well? :eek:

If they are for cosmetics then you are pretty safe, those are meant for the face so they go through pretty vigorous regulations and are the safest of the bunch. [emoji178][emoji178][emoji178]

Nim, I have been following your thread since it started and can I say, your tails are absolutely stunning.
I am a HUGE fan of fish-realistic tails. And this one you are wearing in your sig is just breathtaking. I love the colour shift, and the small 'spots' along certain parts of the fluke and body.
I had a look at your website, and was thrilled to see a spot available for a tail. I am seriously considering taking it, if it is still available.
Do you have any photos of side fins, or a dorsal fin with the hidden zipper? I would LOVE to see how they come out!

New video added in the initial post. Having a tendency to ramble, it always takes me a while to edit these, so they're somewhat behind the actual progress of the tail.

I'll do my best to keep the updates coming more regularly in the future. Next up is the actual work with the silicone, and after that it'll be the sculpting of an entirely new fluke based on the exceedingly glamorous Halfmoon Betta fish.

Do you have a picture of the fish you are basing the new fluke off of? I have been designing a fluke based on a particular betta fish but I don't know what it's called.

Nim, if you feel comfortable saying, what kind of pigments are you using? They seem to work wonderfully, and I'm really hoping to add the iridescence into my tail very subtly, since my tail base color will be white. The other color will be brown.

Hi Misty!

That sounds great, I would love to make a white based tail someday too :-).

I usually mix my own pigments, but solarcolordust.com has a good range of chameleon pigments you can use. Go for the ones that have "Ghost" in the name as they are transparent and only add iridescence.

However these are not cosmetics grade, and are quite toxic in their loose form. Make sure you wear gloves and a breather at all times when working with the powder. Oh and it's best not to work inside your home (outside is best actually, or another well ventilated area away from curious children and/or pets). Once the pigment is bound in the silicone it's safe to be around.

Hi everyone!

So, finally I'm getting around to this post. First of all, my deepest apologies for taking so long. I kept wanting to make a video for you guys, but this is getting ridiculous so I'm just typing it out for you.

There's good news and bad news! Bad news first: The current delay in schedule is eight weeks. If anyone wants to step back from their spot on the waiting list I completely understand and the one person who has already prepaid the material-cost is eligable for a full refund if so desired.

Now to the good news. One of the reasons for the production stop is, crazily enough, that I've gotten in trouble with the law. :D The projected sales of my freshly hatched tailmaking studio are so big already that I am not allowed to just sell my tails privately anymore:

I need to found a company!

How crazy is that?

So this is happening. I already have a wonderful partner to do this with, my good just-graduated-from-medschool friend; Alex. She'll be our second half and also the resident expert on health and safety concerns with the materials we are and will be using.

Turns out founding a company is a lot more complicated than you'd think it ought to be, and it costs a lot more money than you'd think as well. I'm learning a lot these days...

It will take at least till the end of August to get the paperwork done if no other obstacles present themselves, but I think this will also bring a lot of benefits. Such as proper buyer protection, cheaper shipment options and many other niceties that I'm still getting familiar with.

That's it! I'll try to get up to speed on all the private correspondance you guys have sent me. But it'll probably take a while longer. (I'm currently playing in a quite famous musical about kittens on a quite big stage, and am running back and fro most of the time... All I can hope to ask of you is some more patience.)

Aww :( That's wild! Yeah, here in the US there are very specific guidelines for how much money you're allowed to make before you have to form a company (sole proprietorship/ corporation/etc.) Actually over here I think that's anything over $500(USD) so even selling one tail here would necessitate having an official company!

That's awesome you have a partner around to help and advise! Many hands make for light work they say!

I know right! I'm not sure exactly how complicated it is in Switzerland but when I started my business there was a lot of red tape to get through and money to spend, not to mention some of the business categories are so similar and the actual guidelines can get pretty convoluted. It definitely is interesting!

And I'm glad a business set up will bring so many rewards for you!

I'm considering my first silicone tail and I love her work, but my email to her from almost a month ago has gone unanswered, and I also noticed in the past few days that her website domain has expired. I gather from her last post that she's been swamped with stuff, but it's been quite a while and with the website down I'm wondering if she'll be continuing with her tailmaking business? I actually have paid for most of my tail the second payment isn't supposed to be due until the tail is ready to ship, but I haven't heard from her since she posted the update on here which was July 8th. My tail was supposed to be done in August but because of the new business paperwork I understand why it wasnt started when it was supposed to be. (That I know of it still hasn't been.) Since July 8th I have emailed her 5 times and I haven't received any response. With her webpage down now I'm actually really nervous and wonder if I should've asked for my money back. I know she has some great skills and she's a perfectionist so she doesn't want to say anything until everything is is done right, and she has another job not just this, but I'm seriously starting to worry about what's going on. I know my husband and friends are starting to tell me what could possibly be the worst case scenario.
I don't want anyone to get mad over this posting I honestly just don't know what's going on or what I should do.

The whois details the domain expired after being paid for since 2015. Every sign on the whois indicated that it wasn't paid for being the 21st of September :( I really hope Nim updates as she appears to be a brilliant tail maker.

No, this does not explain an expired domain. A domain expires if you don't pay for it for the next year. For ".com" it is usually about 20€ per year to it should not be a problem.

I have my own website on a virtual root server so I know what hosting stuff on a server means - and loosing a domain results in so much work that much more work would have to be put into your server that it is cheaper to keep it for a while unused instead of expiring it and update all names if you don't get it back. Think about it: You have to rename all mailboxes etc.

Oh no! That sounds really nerve-wracking...I think its totally understandable to be anxious after so long with no contact at all. Let's hope she's just going through some kind of extraordinary circumstance right now and will resurface sometime soon! I think Glinda Rose knows Nim personally (extrapolating from previous posts), maybe she'll know something?

This is defiantly not something that I wanted to do or ever thought I would need to do. But in all honesty with her website no longer online (for not trying to keep it up) and me not hearing from her I felt it was something that I needed to do. I am posting this in case there is any backlash for these precautionary actions I have taken. I hope you all understand that it is with a heavy heart that I am doing this.

I'm really curious what Nim explanation to all of this is. I got bored and decided to see if I could find an online presence which I did find so lack of internet can be ruled out. I know it's not my business to do any reaching out. It just upsets me all that money spent and just silence she getting. Is there any update to your tail Glenda as I think you were the first in line to get one made from Nim?

I did the same a few days ago (kept the details mostly to myself due to the reasons you've said of it not really being our business, and also to avoid violating anyone's privacy), but while I found signs of an online presence as you probably did, I didn't manage to find evidence of concrete, actual activity past mid-August or so. Unless you've found something I didn't, I suppose temporary lack of internet could still be a vague possibility?


I'm really curious what Nim explanation to all of this is. I got bored and decided to see if I could find an online presence which I did find so lack of internet can be ruled out. I know it's not my business to do any reaching out. It just upsets me all that money spent and just silence she getting. Is there any update to your tail Glenda as I think you were the first in line to get one made from Nim?

I keep seeing my name on here. I didn't originally plan on posting but since people are asking:

Yes, she is still in the process of creating a company. It is taking much longer than expected.

Other than that, I don't really know much. Yes, we know each other, but we also live in different countries so I'm not that involved in her tail stuff. My best advice is to exercise patience - chances are, she'll be back once the company is sorted. Until then, it's a waiting game.

There is probably a reason behind everything. Many makers will be super quiet for a long time, for what ever reason that may be. She may be trying to set up her website elsewhere. She might have family issues, etc etc etc.

If this goes on for much longer, do something. But for now;
I suggest calming down and being patient.

I keep hearing from in person friends and online people/friends that it's not normal, then I hear from other online people that this is normal. Honestly I don't know what to think anymore, I feel bad for posting anything on here in the first place. I don't want there to be any fights or harassment. I'm not sure what to think about all of this. I haven't started any claims through PayPal just sent her a message through them since I wasn't hearing back via email. I don't know what to do at this point but I definitely don't want anyone harassing her. I don't think anyone on here, or anyone I know in person would send her anything at all let alone on her personal page but I feel the need to put this out there.

I'll take your word for that until the first of November. Having been in a similar situation with a fabric tail make a couple months ago, it's a legit concern for me to not see another mer get burn. I just really wish to know why she will not just communicate back. An email from her would only take 10 minutes out of the 1,440 minutes that's in a single day.

I have been in touch with Nim today and have some long-awaited info:

First of all, she is aware of her e-mail backlog and apologises for delays. She admits that communication is her weakness and that she hasn't been completely on top of it recently. But rest assured, she knows that people are trying to get in touch, and will work on dealing with it.

Second, she has agreed to let me take charge of some of the communication for her. By this, I mean I will be keeping an eye on things happening in this forum, and if there are any issues I will be actively passing them onto her. I hope that his means that, in the future, there are much clearer channels of communication, meaning you guys won't all get stuck wondering what's going on.

She says that the company papers should be here any day now. Not exactly sure when, but once they're here it should be possible to get things moving again, and she can resume the creative side of tail making.

I completely panicked when I saw her website was down, so I started asking people questions and googling similar situations which only made it worse, much like googling symptoms lol. I also just want to say that in looking for her social media accounts and such, it was just an attempt to get more context in a situation we knew so little about, and I had absolutely no intentions of witch-hunting or harassing her. (So Khaleesi, don't feel bad! It was reasonable for you to feel anxious in that situation, and no harm was done. I'm really sorry for putting you in that conflicted position if I inadvertently did, though!) That is the reason I have never disclosed any identifiable details publicly, and the only thing I would've done with it is to give it to affected individuals upon request as an alternative last-ditch means to contact her strictly about refunds, only if all else fails. I am so glad that this won't be necessary, since I would've felt really bad about violating her privacy like that as well. I'm sure Slim's intentions were similar, since he was careful with what he revealed as well!

Super stoked to hear that she is still working on getting that tailmaking company set up! Her work is so beautiful, it would have been such a shame to see it end here. I got a progress update for my tail on Jan 24th Nim got in contact to let me know that the tail is coming along nicely. I'm sending in my measurements tonight.
I don't have any pictures of the tail yet but I'm excited to see it. :D I'm hoping for pictures soon, I've been waiting on my tail for what feels like forever. Lol
From here on out I'll let everyone know when I'm updated. :)

It's been a while since I dropped by here! Ended up getting a Mertailor Spellbound for my first silicone tail (which I absolutely love, don't get me wrong!) because things were looking so uncertain here. Nothing yet, last I heard she was somewhere else working and would resume the tail when she got back to her area again. That was on March 24th. I've sent her a few emails but she's probably busy, hopefully she will get back to me with those pictures soon, I would love to see how my tail baby is doing. Just wanted to pop in. I haven't heard anything from Nim and was actually scared she may of been in a accident or something. She and I kept in contact for a while about making a tail for me and I was going to pay in full last June (2017). She randomly stopped replying to my messages and so I ended up getting a Spellbound from Mertailor. I'm glad to hear she's still doing well and I hope the tails she has been making looks awesome! It's over a year. Is there any updates on your tail too? The silence in this thread is a bit concerning. The fact you and the other mer who bought a tail from Nim and everything going quiet has me worry. I just want to see the best for this community.
