Hi there!

I feel kind of funny writing this. I am feeling a bit shy! I keep half writing, then stopping, and going again...I guess this is because I really just discovered this place and I don't know how much I identify with being a mermaid yet. I've just ordered my monotail from Finis and hopefully after I strap that badboy to my feet it'll become more real. My husband thinks it's very fitting - he says I am a fish on land.

And it's very true! I've been swimming on my own since I was very small, and did competitive swimming for a few years so my only speed in the water is fast. I'm also becoming a health nut and I heard that the monofin is a great core workout.

I am planning on making my own tail using instructions from Mermaid Sasha and Little Orca. I am actually making it based on an orca - I fell in love with cetaceans when I was a little girl and can think of nothing for fitting for myself.

Anyways, I wanted to say hi and that I am super excited to be here. I am also from Vancouver, British Columbia...and I am so happy that there are more Van Mers out there!

Welcome! I'm a newbie mer too, from northwestern Washington State, not too far from Vancouver! I have visited your beautiful city before and absolutely loved it.

Thank you for the warm welcome! It makes me so happy to know that there are others close by to me! We should have a Pacific Northwest Mer BBQ or something...mainly because I love to BBQ!

I was thinking more about where my connection to the water came from...all Mers seem to have an early connection to water or the ocean. I know that I have always been able to swim. My Mum had me in water babies and I adored it, unlike most of the other babes in the class...I was swimming on my own at age three. My Grandmother down the road had a pool and I basically spent my summers in it. The ocean played a big part in my life. My other grandparents had a beach house on the Sunshine Coast, with a sandy beach and submerged rock formation a 10 minute walk away. I spent the other half of my summers swimming in the ocean - either out front or at the sandy beach. Living in Vancouver also gave me access to a beautiful aquarium, which at the time had two magnificent orcas - Finna and Bjossa. I fell in complete love with them. This is why I love orcas in particular but also any other kind of cetacean. I also have a soft spot for humpback whales...I have been whale watching a few times and the urge to jump on in and swim with them is very strong! I also love sharks and sea turtles but that is a whole other story.

I am also a Jr. Open Water Diver, and will be getting my full open this year. I finally got my husband to try it and he also adores it. He was a lot of work. He's from England and his family never put emphasis on swimming and they're landlocked. So he never really learned to swim - which was hard on me as I love to swim. We befriended a lifeguard and last summer he learned to swim...and now it's hard to keep him out too!
