Sure - I have a quick shoot in the morning at 11 hen we'll be heading down to watch. I have the two o'clock show. The theatre will be close to the Royal Ontario Museum I believe so if you haven't been there definitely check it out.

So the premiere of Mermaids, the documentary made by Ali Weinstein and Caitlin Durlak (Caitlin Du Lac ;) ) happened on Friday evening.

My review:

TL;DR, this movie is incredible. See it!

Gorgeous cinematography, underwater and above.

It's not one of those preachy movies that narrates facts. It's about feelings, and inspiration, and leaves you feeling uplifted at the end.

There may be a lot of people discovering their inner Mer through this film, and joining the community.

GTA mers: there are still 2 shows happening this week. If you can get down, I would recommend doing it.

So how can you non-Torontonians get to see the film.

Canadians will probably see it first. According to Caitlin, the film has been picked up for broadcast on a Canadian TV channel. They are negotiating to get it picked up by other distributors, including Netflix, but no specific details yet. Caitlin said they hope to release it on DVD eventually, but theatre & broadcast distribution is the priority.

Perhaps the producers could post updates on MN as the film becomes available for watching?

One thing that has always disappealed to me in the documentary world compared to feature films is that people dress like slobs at their premieres, even the film makers themselves. The HotDocs festival was downscale as usual- with one glowing exception.

I'm pleased to report that the Mermaids crew were the best-dressed at the festival. They even looked more elegant than the host presenters. Ralph wore a pinstripe suit, and the ladies wore really nice evening wear.

Note Added in Edit: Mermaids was sold out. There wasn't a single seat left when the movie started. Caitlin & Ali filled the largest theatre in the festival. Goes to show how mermaids capture people's imagination, I suspect.

I've seen the movie on Saturday. While I did enjoy it, I wish that it was more culturally diverse - even though it was age diverse, body diverse, gender identity diverse, loads of mers with different backgrounds and experiences...

I've noticed there were plenty of elders who went and by the end of the film some even wanted to take up mermaiding as a fun hobby, which was really sweet to see.

Hmm, the only issue with cultural diversity is, it takes a bigger budget to travel to other cultures.

Of course, now that they've successfully made this movie- maybe they can do a sequel where they go around the world exploring mermaid culture

Maybe they could go to where I lived as a kid. Our town was near a river where the priestesses of the Mami Wata mermaid goddesses would practice their calling.

I just had to post this picture. It captures one of the key facts about Mami Wata- they keep up with the times, and they still captivate men today. The latest story I read about one was one in Nigeria who misled a young student to drop out of university and completely devote himself to her (that's a waaay better story than "the dog ate my course notes"- LOL)
