View Full Version : SoCal Swim Practices?

I tried posting on the Facebook pod group, but didn't get any results. (though I got some likes for me starting my merman youtube channel finally!)

Anyway, I was wondering if there's anyone here in the Southern California area (particularly Orange County) that might be up to swim practices in tails? Please let me know! My hourlgass dolphin tail need to see water! :D

hey. it's a bit of a drive for me, but I'd be interested in practicing to. My tails don't get to much time in the water and I'd love to learn to both learn to swim better with and without a tail.

Do you have a place in mind? I have never been to a mer gathering before.

I find that the best way to get people together for a meetup is to get a location, set a time, and then invite people. If you build it they will come, sort of thing.

I'm definitely interested. I have an idea, but am not sure about it yet. I was a lifeguard at a local pool that I could ask about.

No, unfortunately I don't actually have my own place (or any community one that I'm aware of) that I could invite or bring people to.

But if you want to try asking, Triton, that could be worth a shot!

So much truth. That how I'm doing it in Florida this Thursday with this method.

Yeah, but the problem is that a bunch of us don't actually have access to a location. :\ Hard to bring people somewhere when we don't have somewhere to go! Hence why the couple of us are asking around. :O

I have not asked my old boss yet, but I want to know if there will be a lot of people and if they are all adults. Also, it may be a good idea for us all to meet in person on dry land somewhere first. Anyone who is interested, just use this page for now. Again nothing certain yet, but I want to have some info to give him.

Can I ask where the pool is? Depending on where it is, I might be able to go or not.

Yeah, agreed. As for me, it'd be just me and naturally I'm an adult. I'd like to make more meets too, so maybe we can also coordinate just kind of simple meets? Like, mer lunch or something? We could have one or two in a few towns so that people from a wider area can kind of get to meet before hand, and then we could gather for the practice itself.

I myself am (while technically in "unincorporated Orange County") am listed as living in Tustin, if that helps.

The Downtown Aquatics Center in Costa Mesa is what I was speaking of. I'll ask about if we can swim in tails after I know how many people will be in our group. I know they will at least let us swim in monofins as I do that there all the time. I like the mer lunch idea. It'd be a good way for all of us to get to know each other.

I could probably do meet ups on the weekends if enough people go.

Cool, sounds good to me. And weekends are generally my safest bet, too.

For all of you that are interested in getting together for lunch sometime, What sounds good? I'm not very picky. I could go for burgers, sandwiches, Italian of some kind, or sea food. Those aren't the only things I like. I am just throwing out suggestions. Also, we don't need to go anywhere expensive. What would you all want to have if we planned a lunch meet up?

Delphinus

Well, where would be a convenient 'middle ground' for those of us on this thread? Obviously we can adjust, but since we're talking here I figured we'd start here too. :)

I don't know if Tustin works for anyone, but it's (again, technically my home city) and I know a pretty great diner place that I quite enjoy. John's Place is very near to me, and I love their food; plus they have lots of indoor seating and a lovely patio that's almost always empty with a decent amount of seating. Open air seating for us mers could be neat. <3 They do burgers, Mexican, and a few assorted plates and such. Price ranges depending on what you get of course.

Just an idea?

Sounds good to me. You are speaking of the one on 1st Street, right?

Hi, did you want to practice in the pool or in the ocean? I live in San Diego and I'm a new mermaid who has access to a large private pool and looking for people to practice with as well.

Hello again of course I didn't read the entire thread before I posted. I wanted to coordinate a meet up at my pool in San Diego, perhaps in May or June on a weekend. If there's enough interest I'd like to do it on a regular basis. the pool is heated and not too many residents use it in the off hours.

Firstly, Delphinus okay with the meet spot. Is there anyone besides us that wants to meet up? If not, I am still willing to go. We just have to figure out a time. Secondly, Aquamtc I might be able to go. It just depends on when it is you want to meet.

I'm interested in meetups, but not so much when they are so far away from me. I am in Simi Valley. Thing is, there is a community pool that accepts tail swimmers right here in town. Also, there is a calm beach suitable for swimming not too far away. I tried setting up meets at the beach a few times, but the entire "make it and they will come" idea did not work. Once no one came, and twice, just one other person came.

There aren't too many Mers up in our county is why. But I will be out more this summer hopefully depending on my work schedule and I think Kalani was looking at making it out a few times.

It is surprising there are not more of us here. From what I can see, we are mostly spread out far enough that it makes it hard to get together.

Delphinus

Agreed. It's quite surprising, considering "California". Well, in regards to San Diego, and any other spots, I'd say we could (for those of us here on Mernetwork) go ahead and use this and similar to coordinate either way? We made two pages, so clearly it's at least garnering enough attention that people are drawn to it to see what's going on.

Perhaps we could simply try to set up meets for practice and/or just to get to meet each other, and also consider a larger meet down the road if people would be able to gather once sometime?

Since CA is such a big state, it'll obviously leave a lot out, but there's also Catalina Island, which I know many of us in SoCal like. The main beach by the docks is perfect for mers with tiny waves and calm water. Naturally that'd likely be one of the "once in a while" meets in all likelihood.

I haven't gotten my tail yet, that is why I haven't replied to this thread sooner, though I have been monitoring it in case I am able to get the tail in time. :)

You don't need a tail to talk to us Khaleesi. Go ahead and speak up. You are welcome here, and if we have a gathering, unless you are an evil demon overlord that crawled out from the depths of Hades with schemes of universal domination, you are welcome to come as well (with or without a tail).

Would Ontario mills be too far out for anyone? Just throwing that out there. :p

Merman Storm
04-06-2017, 12:09 AM
That would be a 190 mile round trip for me. Would you do it?

Delphinus
04-06-2017, 06:27 PM
It's doable, but gets to be roughly 1 hr 40 - 2 hours depending on traffic, and my luck with traffic is never good. :|

Wow. Why are we all spread out from each other? lol

Khaleesi Daenerys
04-06-2017, 09:54 PM
Yeah it's a bit over 110 miles one way for me. But Anaheim is even farther.

Merdude Ricky
04-07-2017, 09:15 AM
Damn. I should have figured Ontario was too far. I'll meet some of you some day.... (Even though I already have been to a couple of meet ups. I'd still like to meet others)

Downside to being in one of the bigger states. ;_; Means everyone has a higher chance of being more distant.

As a new mer-person, it would be wonderful to meet up, practice or otherwise (and I need the practice!). I use to live in the OC myself, family house in Villa Park of all places. Alas, the house is to be sold, passing of last parent. I do have friends in the area and can usually arrange couch-camping space, so if a swim-meet (ha!) materializes, I can factor that in for the road trip down from the Central Coast. Will be ordering fin/tail - this is soooo cool.

Merman Storm

We just has a meet at Harbor cove beach at Ventura. That would have been about 3 hours closer to you than Orange county. Keep a lookout, we are thinking of another in a few weeks.

Mermaid Bree

I'm willing to do the SD thingy, I would need to coordinate couch-camping space with friends in the OC, but not outside of the realm of doable... Or meetup in the OC. Or both... Don't have my tail YET, but... I like the idea of 'private', or at least 'not during prime-time' as that lessens problems. Especially if coordinated ahead of time with the facility / lifeguards (so they don't freak out, of course.)

Keep me posted - bear in mind I don't have a tail yet, but WILL be getting one through Once Upon A Mermaid - going with a rainbow-like blue with a more black (yet also holographic) fluke. Think in terms of a Betta... Gonna take a few weeks even AFTER I cough up the $ for it.
